The Register" meldet [1]: Careless use of Windows folders cost a Scottish student a lengthy prison stretch today, as an Edinburgh High Court Judge sentenced Mohammed Atif Siddique to eight years for possession of terrorism-related items. During his trial the jury had been told by Michael Dickson, a forensics analyst for t …

2007-10-23 18:44 Make Walls, Not War
By Peter W. Galbraith, a former United States ambassador to Croatia and the author of œThe End of Iraq . He is a principal in a company that does consulting in Iraq and elsewhere (THE NEW YORK TIMES, 23/10/07): In a surge of realism, the Senate has voted 75-23 to acknowledge that Iraq has broken up and cannot be put back together. The measure, co-sponsored by Joe Biden, a Democratic presidential candidate, and Sam Brownback, Republican of Kansas, supports a plan for Iraq to become a loose confe …

2007-10-22 23:34 New security certificate law to be unveiled today
The federal government is expected to propose a new national security certificate law today that permits the use of secret intelligence, but allows a special court advocate to challenge its validity. The Supreme Court of Canada in February struck down the controversial immigration law that gives the government power to deport non-citizens deemed national security risks. The secrecy of the process violated the constitutional right to fair trial, the high court wrote in a unanimous ruling. Parliam …

2007-10-22 19:00 Nato utan strategi i afghanistan

2007-10-21 09:03 Deploying for ˜The New Normal
By Jim Hoagland (THE WASHINGTON POST, 21/10/07): Britain has decided to declare stability in southern Iraq and get out of the Shiite power struggles in Basra. In Afghanistan, an urgent need to recruit local police officers whose loyalty to the NATO -backed Kabul government is uncertain tempers ambitions to build an integrated national police force. The search for "local solutions" is accelerating across the Middle East and Central Asia as U.S. and allied forces assess the high cost of the two sh …

2007-10-20 23:13 The Iraqi Tar Baby
In retrospect, George Herbert Walker Bush seems like a genius for not deposing Saddam Hussein and occupying Iraq. A review of John Agresto's Mugged By Reality: The Liberation of Iraq and the Failure of Good Intentions. As one of those who thought the invasion of Iraq was a good thing to do for both humanitarian and strategic reasons, the flow of books by those who went there after the invasion or by Iraqis who did their best to put it on the path to democracy all tell essentially the same story …

Jalaluddin Haqqani with his son Nasrudin. Click to view. As the Taliban's insurgency in Pakistan escalates, the US and Afghan National Army have identified Pakistani-based Siraj Haqqani as the primary threat to security in eastern Afghanistan. 2007-10-19 22:14 A history of trouble in the NW Frontier
By Graham Stewart (THE TIMES, 20/10/07): Events in Pakistan have taken yet another dreadful turn for the worse with the suicide bomb attacks on Benazir Bhutto s homecoming rally. Ms Bhutto has been quick to accuse supporters of the late military ruler Mohammad Zia ul-Haq of complicity. Others suspect al-Qaeda. For any Pakistani politician the equation seems unappealingly simple. Attacking the terror fastnesses in Waziristan and the other border regions along the old North West Frontier courts pe …

By Charles Krauthammer (THE WASHINGTON POST, 19/19/10): There are three relevant questions concerning the Armenian genocide. (a) Did it happen (b) Should the U.S. House of Representatives be expressing itself on this now (c) Was House Speaker Nancy Pelosi 's determination to bring this to a vote, knowing that it risked provoking Turkey into withdrawing crucial assistance to American soldiers in Iraq, a conscious (columnist Thomas Sowell) or unconscious (blogger Mickey Kaus) attempt to sabotage t …

2007-10-19 15:51 Saudi Academy in the News
There's been a recent furor in the US media over the Saudi Academy in Norther Virginia after a report [13-page PDF document] by the congressionally funded U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF). The report is strongly critical of the Academy but strangely, according to the Arab News piece cited below, never bothered to contact the Academy directly, instead relying on second- and third-hand reports. The USCIRF report Much is made of the allegation that the Academy is, in fact …

2007-10-19 15:01 Pakistan

The aftermath of the attack on Bhutto's convoy. Click to view. As the toll from yesterday's ambush on former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto convoy rises to 132 killed and upwards of 500 wounded, the details of the strike emerge. The attack was a sophisticated, coordinated strike carried out by professional terrorists. Conflicting reports exist, but it is clear at least one suicide bomber, and possibly two, conducted the attack, possibly in conjunction with snipers, a car bomb, and a person throwi …

2007-10-18 18:32 Portents of A Nuclear Al-Qaeda
By David Ignatius (THE WASHINGTON POST, 18/10/07): Rolf Mowatt-Larssen is paid to think about the unthinkable. As the Energy Department 's director of intelligence, he's responsible for gathering information about the threat that a terrorist group will attack America with a nuclear weapon. With his shock of white hair and piercing eyes, Mowatt-Larssen looks like a man who has seen a ghost. 2007-10-18 10:37 How U.S. policy has destabilized the Middle East
(Originally posted at The Motley Patriot and is an update to an article I wrote posted at TalkLeft )I originally posted a diary at TalkLeft entitled, `The Merry-Go-Round of Iraqi Sectarian Violence`, in which I show how U.S. policy in Iraq is fueling the sectarian violence. Given Turkey's recent vote to allow incursions into northern Iraq against the PKK, I thought an update appropriate. So, first, exactly how is the U.S. policy in Iraq fueling the sectarian violence Because we are arming militi …

2007-10-17 09:01 CNN hos Lars Vilks
Still one could argue Vilks should have known better because of what happened in Denmark in 2005, when a cartoonist's depictions of the prophet sparked violent protests in the Muslim world and prompted death threats against that cartoonist's life.

Country Music Stars Challenge Al-Qaeda With Patriotic New Song "Bomb New York" Genius -- from the realistic mindless ad-libbing by the newsman, to the suggestive warnings against specific ways in which the city is vulnerable (which was often part of media coverage). This might win the award for media quote of the decade: Right now, said another U.S. official, who declined even to be identified by the agency he works for, the data are "insufficient and difficult to measure." It's out of context - obviously, but hell, that statement doesn't require context, it's utterly meaningless anywhere. The mind reels with the possibilities. But it came from a WaPo piece (co-authored by Tom "Fiasco" Ricks) quoting various unnamed officials on whether or not al Qaeda in I …

The Washington Note Under Clinton, relations …
