2007-10-15 18:01  And Not A Drop To Drink
Here in Atlanta, we're down to about three months of water for the entire city. Most of the state of Georgia, as well as areas in Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia and the entire state of South Carolina are in the midst of a severe hydrological drought. Now this is different from a meteorological or agricultural drought - we're a few months past both of those drought stages. In a hydrological drought, water reserves start to dry up (in ou …

2007-09-24 12:11  Forgive Lloyd. Pardon Lloyd. Grant Lloyd Atonement for Never Running the Clock Out.
For those of you who have not had the intense pleasure of watching 12-13 Michigan games every fall for the entirety of Lloyd Carr's tenure, you may not quite understand the basic tenets of Lloydball. For the uninitated who haven't seen all 153 of Lloyd's games as coach in Ann Arbor, here's a basic primer: 1. Running the football is the preferred way to progress down the field. Passing is fun when behind, in long yardage, and/or to loosen up defenses, but the default call on offense should be a r …

2007-09-03 20:29  NCAA Division I-A (FBS) College Football Preseason Rankings and 1st Week Performance of those Teams
Preseason 2007 USA Today Coaches NCAA Division I-A Football Rankings compared to 1st Week Performance 1. USC looked sluggish against Idaho (4-8 in 2006), winning 38-10 - certainly not deserving of a No. 1 ranking based on this performance 2. LSU beat Mississippi State (3-9 in 2006 and a 48-17 loser to LSU) 45-0 with superb defense 3. Florida beat Western Kentucky (6-5 in 2006 and a 48-12 loser to Georgia) 49-3 in a game called because of lightning with 8:23 left to play in the 4th quarter 4. Tex …

2007-09-02 16:07  The Shark Attack Capital of the World
Great White Shark: Wikipedia.org Anyone who's done a bit of world travel can tell you, there's a lot of stuff out there just waiting to attack you, eat you, or make you sick. Or at least it seems that way... Just last week a surfer was attacked by a shark in Monterey Bay, California. However, California isn't the only place you hear about shark attacks. Most travelers know to be aware of sharks from Brazil, to South Africa, down to Australia, and the South Pacific. But just how real is the shark …

2007-08-31 12:09  George Bush Cares About Toyota Dealerships
If you thought that Katrina relief from Bush Co. depended largely upon political affiliation, you would be right. Lardy lobbyist turned goveronor, Haley Barbour (R), of Mississippi, has received disproportionate amounts in relief for his cronies as compared to Blanco's (D) Louisiana. And if you thought that most of the aid that IS going to Louisiana is going outside New Orleans, you would be right again. In order to buy another statehouse for the GOP, federal cash is being handed out all over Lo …

By David Walsh WSWS 30 August 2007 Working class residents of New Orleans responded with anger and protests to the visit paid by George W. Bush Wednesday on the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, a tragedy which led to the loss of more than 1,800 lives and massive devastation in the region. Bush administration neglect and indifference contributed to the deaths and mass suffering and continues to be responsible for the plight of countless thousands of present or former New Orleans and Gulf …
