2007-09-01 15:51  Sondheim Preserved
One of the more anticipated films of the fall-winter movie season is Tim Burton s at-long-last adaptation of composer Stephen Sondheim s masterwork, the Tony award-winning Grand Guignol musical, œSweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, starring Johnny Depp in the title role and Helena Bonham Carter as his conspirator in crime, Mrs. Lovett. This is just about a perfect mating of filmmaker with material. And it s been a long time coming. Although filmmakers have come and gone over the pas …

2007-08-24 21:28  New Yorker Films Catalogue Odds and Ends
For my own databases, I'm curious if any of my readers knows whether or not New Yorker Films currently owns the North American rights to any of these individual films. New Yorker Films did own the titles at one point but, like their Ozu and Malle, other companies may have snatched them. The Crimianal Life of Archibaldo De La Cruz (1955; Luis Bunuel) Letter from Siberia (1957; Chris Marker) Les Mauvaises fréquentations (1963; Jean Eustache) The Kourmiko Mystery (1965; Chris Marker) Santa Claus Ha …

2007-08-17 04:30  Scorsese at his best: "The Man Who Set Film Free"
View image While I was gone, the New York Times printed a magnificent appreciation of Michelangelo Antonioni written by Martin Scorsese, called " The Man Who Set Film Free ." This piece, which begins with Scorsese recalling the profound effect of seeing "L'Avventura" for the first time in 1961, is so moving, and so perceptive, that I can honestly say it ranks with some of the best things Scorsese has ever done. Reading it brings tears to my eyes -- like a great film does. Scorsese traces how the …

2007-08-12 16:44  Woody and Marty Make Me Think
TWO INCREDIBLY WORTHWHILE remembrances today in the New York Times: Martin Scorsese muses on the power of Michelangelo Antonioni, "The Man Who Set Film Free," Where almost every other movie I d seen wound things up, œL Avventura wound them down. The characters lacked either the will or the capacity for real self-awareness. They only had what passed for self-awareness, cloaking a flightiness and lethargy that was both childish and very real. And in the final scene, so desolate, so eloquent, one …

View image Death... death of art... death of cinema... "... than a bad argument for something I hold dear," said Daniel Dennett, quoted at the top of the column to the right. In this case, the argument belongs to Camille Paglia (" Art Movies, R.I.P. ") and the thing I hold dear is the intoxication of seeing a great movie. She does a lovely job of capturing what the latter is like (although she puts it firmly in the past tense), but spends too much of her time simply explaining what a dinosaur sh …

2007-08-07 16:51  Who are the oldest living film directors [updated 10 August]
WHILE REELING FROM THE WASH OF COMMENTARY AFTER THE DEATHS OF INGMAR BERGMAN AND MICHELANGELO ANTONIONI ON THE SAME DAY, much of which ventured who, beyond the prolific near-centenarian from Porto, might be the oldest surviving world directors, it was striking to realize how many persist at their craft even as they grow older. Other patterns emerged: it s intriguing to consider the work of dissimilar directors born in the same month or year. Is it meaningful in any way that the director of Annie …

Jonathan Rosenbaum puts another nail in Ingmar Bergman's coffin in today's New York Times (" Scenes From an Overrated Career "). As important as Bergman was to the rise of European "art film," especially in the 1950s and '60s, Rosenbaum says, Bergman -- who was more a theatrical director than a cinematic one -- wasn't really adding anything new to the art of fil …

"I hope I never get so old I get religious." -Ingmar Bergman œI mean simply to say that I want my characters to suggest the background in themselves, even when it is not visible. I want them to be so powerfully realized that we cannot imagine them apart from their physical and social context even when we see them in empty space. Another occasional list. Recently seen enthusiasms. -THE FABULOUS BARON MUNCHAUSEN (Karel Zeman, 1961) Not the Terry Gilliam version, but the far superior Czech marvel that inspired it. A fantastical mix of cut-out animation, live action, and deliberately unreal backgrounds. Whimsy at its finest. -HAPPINESS (Agnes Varda, 1965) Candy-colored French pastorale, complete with Bach reveries, and true romance. Only there's one lover too many in this mix.
