2007-11-05 21:07 The Iraq war has become a disaster that we have chosen to forget
By Madeleine Bunting (THE GUARDIAN, 05/11/07): "You think you are innocent, but you're not," said the British Muslim suicide bomber in the Channel 4 television drama Britz last week. As the compelling actor Manjinder Virk recited her suicide statement to camera, she went on: thousands of women and children are dying every day in Iraq and Afghanistan, and yet the governments responsible have been returned to power. Her assertion sticks in the mind because it goes straight to the heart of how we ch …

2007-10-24 23:27 Coen, Coen & McCarthy
Cormac McCarthy y los hermanos Coen. Foto: Eric Ogden. Fuente: time Es genial.

2007-10-19 16:13 Jonathan Harris at Pop!Tech: The Whale Hunt
The highlight of today's first session entitled "The Pursuit of Happiness" was seeing friend, JoshSpear.com regular and sure-fire genius Jonathan Harris present one of his latest projects entitled The Whale Hunt. Whale Hunt tells his story of visiting the Northern most part of Alaska to witness, and observe, a traditional whale hunt. Jonathan took photos at 5-minute intervals throughout his 11 days up there (even while sleeping) and more often at more exciting moments. The result is basically a …

2007-10-18 11:15 Alpine PMD-B200 Blackbird II now official
Alpine officially announced their new PMD-B200 Blackbird II with a press release but there was never mention of a 10GB HDD like we said it would last month (sorry). We're blaming Crutchfield where we initially got the specs which also seems to have corrected their mistake. Anyhow, let's leave all this behind us and talk about the correct specs. Built-in Bluetooth module, and a built-in traffic tuner still exist on Alpine Blackbird II as we previously stated. However the press release says the GP …

2007-10-16 20:11 2DollarDeal :: RE: Octobers Promotion #3 Post here to win $75
Author: skepticalcynic Posted: Tue Oct 16, 2007 12:11 pm (GMT -8) I used to live in Ohio, too - Cleveland area. Also lived in Wisconsin, Massachusetts and Alaska. I'll never leave Florida. I used to hate the heat when I lived up north, but here it doesn't bother me. I think it's because the year-round temperature range is a lot smaller here - between 40ish and 100ish is only 60 degrees - but in the north the temp range is a lot more - between -10ish and 90ish is 100 degrees. I think it's harder …

A new federal study shows huge variations in personal health spending among states, ranging from an average of nearly $6,700 a person in Massachusetts to less than $4,000 in Utah. The Clarion Ledger: Eaves, a trial lawyer from Jackson, countered in an interview: ˜The governor likes to take credit for jobs, but just because he cuts a ribbon don't mean he brought the business. If he's going to take credit for every job that comes to Mississippi, he needs to take credit for every one that's lost, too. In August, the national unemployment rate was 4.6 percent and Mississippi's was 5.9 percent. Only two states were worse off than Mississippi. Alaska's jobless rate was 6.3 perc …

Original Essay for Powell's Books "During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act." George Orwell I never intended to be a revolutionary. In March 2003 when the U.S-led invasion of Iraq was launched I was in the midst of another full mountaineering season in Alaska. However, unlike earlier seasons, I was unable to devote myself wholeheartedly to my time in the mountains, which I consider my sanctuary. I retained my links with the less divine through radio and pho …

Dall'assemblea annuale della Geothermal Energy Association a Reno (Nevada): According to a recent report from MIT, "a cumulative capacity of more than 100,000 MW from enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) can be achieved in the United States within 50 years with a modest, multiyear federal investment for R&D in several field projects in the United States."Currently only 3,000 MW—or 3% of that potential—is installed in the U.S. In May 2007, the GEA issued a report that identified 74 new geothermal po …

2007-10-15 10:39 Backbone Meet Democratic Party
Can the Democratic Party be saved Dave Lindorff writes "That is a question that exasperated progressive Democrats across the country are increasingly asking themselves and each other. Last November, when Democrats took control of both houses of Congress - fairly decisively in the House and by a whisker in the Senate - there was widespread relief in progressive circles. Anti-war activists thought there would finally be an end to President Bush's criminal enterprise in Iraq. Civil libertarians tho …

2007-10-13 12:42 Gravel and Paul on PBS
PBS News Hour has interesting in-depth interviews with 'libertarian' U.S. Presidential Candidates who don't stand a chance of winning but should. Libertarian in the sense they would put power back in the hands of the people. And I would call Gravel a libertarian Democrat. PBS gave them time to explain their ideas and present arguments for minimal government intervention in peoples lives something the debate forums do not do. October 12, 2007 Paul Envisions Smaller Government, Less Global Interve …

2007-10-11 21:42 KingCast stands amused as "Last Seduction" plot is allegedly played out in Anchorage.
Once a year or so I watch the Last Seduction. Last weekend I watched it with someone who had never seen it before and she was simply spellbound and I thought about blogging about it. Then today I read this case brewing in Anchorage, Alaska and decided this is the Right Time. "It's a well done movie -- it has all the Hollywood gloss that you would expect as well. The characters are handsome, the pace is intense," Volland said. Judge Volland also characterized the film as hard to watch because of …

2007-10-11 20:39 recklessly unconstitutional: new local sex offender laws passed yesterday
update (Oct. 12, 2007): Prof. Douglas Berman asked today, at his Sentencing Law & Policy weblog, " When and how will SCOTUS address residency restrictions ". Doug says: "All these developments confirm my instinct that it is only a matter of time before the US Supreme Court is going to have to take up legal challenges to sex offender residency restrictions. It is interesting to speculate exactly when and how these issues will come before the High Court." Like Doug Berman, I am hoping the U.S. …
