2007-11-04 16:51 How to Rein in Iran Without War
By Jim Hoagland (THE WASHINGTON POST, 04/11/07): Iran is working to produce a 20-to-50-pound stockpile of enriched uranium that it can use to build atomic weapons within eight to 10 weeks, once it decides to do so - and has consistently lied to the United Nations about those efforts. That headline conclusion is one of two basic points that I draw from a series of private meetings on Iran 's nuclear ambitions involving diplomats, leading academic experts, senior military officers and experienced …

2007-10-08 20:43 News Brief, Tales of Taboo Edition
Defense & The War Finally, after years of occupying their country, we've liberated Iraq from the burden of living in fear for collaborating with us. P.W. Singer (again) on the devil's bargain of PMCs. I like how he wonders how a force can be cost effective when it's more expensive and so detrimental to the overall mission. Worth thinking about, but too many of the administration are in the industry's pocket in a very real sense of the term. More thoughts here. And look who's throwing around the …

2007-09-28 13:47 A German Riesling and an Alsace Gewurtz
My in-laws are visiting, so that means a few more empties in the recycling bin. Fortunately, it means the serious overstock situation in my cellar is being reduced at a healthy rate (you can cancel the flight, Edward). Tonight we worked through some cool-climate whites, enjoying the endless summer here in Montreal and clearing the cellar floor of a few more bottles. Germany seems to be taking a new stab at lower-priced dry whites, so I bought the 2005 Essence Riesling by S. A. Prüm to see what a …

2007-09-15 12:22 A World of Great Whites
For my tasting group this was our first evening dedicated to white wines. With such limited experience at the higher end of the white wine market, we decided to taste a variety of whites from around the world in a more casual, unblinded format, so our tasters put away their score sheets and simply enjoyed. (Except for me) Waiting for the guests to arrive, we sipped on a bottle of 2004 Chateau des Fesles Chenin Sec "La Chapelle" (tasted here previously), the designated "warm-up" wine. Nice for a …

2007-09-02 16:50 Whale Oil Beef Hooked
The news is abuzz with alcohol-related energy headlines. Reaping Global Warming's Bitter Fruits The front page of today's Washington Post declares that the wine-grape harvest has begun in the northern French region of Alsace. Hooray! Or not. Harvest is supposed to be a joyful season, celebrating the bounty Mother Earth has allowed us to reap and transform into intoxicating juice. But this year's harvest offers little cause for carousing. It is the earliest grape harvest ever recorded in Alsace a …

2007-09-01 17:09 The incessant mixture of the incompatible
Mrs. Leonardi and I intend to grab a bite this evening at a new local restaurant that lacks a liquor license. Customers are permitted to "BYOB," and so I grabbed a bottle of Gewurztraminer this afternoon. The reason for my choice is that I've been spending time with the often-hilarious Bad Catholic's Guide to Wine, Whiskey, and Song, and my wife's family hails from the Alsace-Loraine region that borders France and Germany. From the entry "Gewurztraminer: The Alsacians Need Better Neighbors": The …

2007-09-01 04:18 From Now On, I'll Read All Those Warnings
Putting my usual anti-Disney attitude aside, I have to admit their little hospital, the one right behind that pink and white striped patio birthday-restaurant venue which is adjacent to the Star Tours ride, is pretty neat. The high temps and humidity were one thing, but I got run over by a woman with two crying kids in a two-seater stroller, then minutes later a Northern European guy practically sat on my lap and undid the wrapping on a stinky sandwich right under my nose. I'm not making much of …

2007-08-25 11:15 Hay Hay It's Donna Day#14-The Roundup!
An incredible array of gnocchi dishes have been streaming in over the last few weeks and all are scrumptious looking with top notch photography. A host of talented cooks from all over the world took the gnocchi challenge and came up with some exciting salads, sides, main dishes and desserts. Some, like myself, had never made gnocchi before and some were seasoned professionals. As a few mentioned in their posts, gnocchi isn't particularly photogenic; nevertheless, everyone came up with beautiful …

2007-08-17 13:38 Grape Picker...
I really only got to pick grapes one time... That was at the October harvest in Riquewihr, Alsace, one of the most beautiful harvests anywhere. And that was only because Ed Lauber of Lauber Imports put in a good word with one of his vineyard suppliers. My payment for standing around holding grape shears in my blistering hands, was sitting at the long vineyard table and sharing a huge wluscious lunch. In Alsace, grape picking is a family affair, so everyone knows everyone else and every member of …

2007-08-17 08:31 Peter Frost's explanation for high average Ashkenazi Jewish IQs
Attempts to come up with a Darwinian explanation for the high average IQ of European Jews go back at least to Norbert Weiner's 1953 autobiography, in which he argued that arranged marriages between the shetl's brightest young rabbi and the richest merchant's daughter would lead to large numbers of smart children having enough money to survive. In 2005, Greg Cochran, Henry Harpending, and Jason Hardy put forward a sophisticated theory pointing to selection for the mental demands of traditional As …

2007-08-16 14:50 Victims Of Diversity
While we're on the topic of crime, and before too much time goes by, I would like to make note of two murders that took place earlier this summer. The first concerns an incident on June 30 when an automobile was driven into a crowd in Berrwiller (Haut-Rhin) killing a young man and critically injuring two others. Pierre Vial writing for the nationalist website Terre et Peuple severely criticized the French press for downplaying or ignoring the crime: Who was the perpetrator of the violence Accord …

2007-08-15 12:14 The Basics of Enjoying Wine 101.2
(This is the second installment of a four-part question and answer series about wine. To read part I, click here .) by Jeff Siegel* Is wine from France better than wine from California How do I know where to buy it from Good wine is good wine, no matter where it comes from. Some Missouri wine can make a French or California bottle taste like it was made in a bathtub. Real estate matters for price and style of the wine. A great wine is a combination of the skill of the wine maker and the quality …

Here is the second section from the Parents Review, Volume II article, "The Place of Greek in Modern Education." This article was published in 1891 and was written by Oscar Browning. You will find part one of this article here. Some of the terms he uses will be familiar to homeschoolers, but some of us use the same terms rather differently. Modern American homeschooling uses a term, classical education, to refer to a 'stages of learning' framework first introduced by Dorothy Sayers (author of th …

Café d'Alsace has a delicious, if overpriced, burger, smothered in French munster, simmered onions, and aioli. I couldn't finish it at today's brunch, and the fattiness of it made me nervous, but its oniony cheesiness was a thing to behold. Dinner tonight will be corn and tomatoes!

2007-08-07 21:40 Suite française
There are three pieces of music with this name, aside from Bach s six suites for clavier called French. Roger-Ducasse wrote an orchestral suite (1907). Poulenc wrote one (1935) for two oboes, two bassoons, two trumpets, three trombones, percussion and harpsichord. Milhaud wrote one (1944) for brass band, or orchestra, or piano (four hands). The band version is best. Milhaud s was performed at a concert in Central Park in New York on June 13 1945 by the Goldman Band conducted by EF Goldman. There …

2007-08-01 22:41 Evolution White, 11th Edition
My first "Yanqui" wine of the month is a white from Oregon. Oregon is a rather unusual place to start given the limited production and even smaller export sales - Oregon's 300+ wineries produce just 1.6 million cases of wine each year, and just 24% of that leaves the country. It is interesting to note, however, that Canada accounts for nearly half of those exports (two thirds of it being Pinot Noir). I will confess that if I am looking for an Oregon wine, it is always a Pinot. While you might th …
