2007-10-22 22:45 COHA Report. The Organization of American States: On its Deathbed
To Our Readers Unfortunately, an older and unedited version of the COHA piece entitled The OAS: On its Deathbed was inadvertently sent out to a very small cohort of COHA readers on October 17 before an error was discovered and the press run was immediately aborted. Due to a computer editing error, the author, Sean Bartlett did not catch that two different facts were spliced into one sentence. Jose Miguel Insulza, as a young man in his late twenties, was a political director in the Chilean For …

2007-08-02 07:56 Justice Department Supports Colonialism
Chiquita paid terrorists and the U.S. Justice Department didn't really mind. In Terrorism-Law Case, Chiquita Points to U.S. On April 24, 2003, a board member of Chiquita International Brands disclosed to a top official at the Justice Department that the king of the banana trade was evidently breaking the nation's anti-terrorism laws. Roderick M. Hills, who had sought the meeting with former law firm colleague Michael Chertoff, explained that Chiquita was paying "protection money" to a Colombian …

2007-07-23 17:43 La Casa Rosada Turns Pink: Cristina Kirchner s Impressive Bid for the Argentine Presidency
As Néstor Kirchner wraps up his term as president of Argentina, First Lady and Senator Cristina Fernández de Kirchner is waiting in the wings to take over his roost in the upcoming October 28 presidential elections. On July 1, she officially announced her candidacy with a statement released by Chief of Cabinet Alberto Fernández, ending months of speculation over which Kirchner would run on the ruling Frente para la Victoria party ticket. While Cristina is all but certain to win the October ballo …

2007-07-19 16:40 Colombian Free Trade Pact Shot Down: One Step Forward for the U.S., One Back for Canada
Recently, the Democratic leadership of the House of Representatives staunchly denounced the previously initialed free trade agreement (FTA) with Colombia, while postponing (at least for several months) the ratification of a comparable trade measure with Peru and Panama. This is merely the latest devastating blow to the standing of Colombia s hard-line right-wing president, Ŕlvaro Uribe, whose disapproval rating hit a high of 27 percent in a Gallup Poll published on July 14. Not only is this a he …

Four stories from over the course of today: By VOA's David Gollust ... U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice [on] Wednesday criticized stalling tactics by Sudan that are holding up deployment of a reinforced international peacekeeping presence in Darfur. Rice will discuss the issue in an Africa visit next week, though she is likely to postpone a planned stop in Kinshasa. VOA's David Gollust reports from the State Department. Rice is making clear her growing impatience over delays in deploying …

2007-07-02 19:21 Infamous Day
I was impressed by an e-mail that arrived in my box last week from a Frenchwoman living in Florida. She has been in the USA for 35 years, is an American citizen and has a son and a granddaughter. She moved to Florida after retiring from the Marietta, Georgia Police Department. Her mission is to make known to Americans what happened in Oran, Algeria on July 5, 1962. She served as County Commissioner in Tampa, FL and has been asked to be a guest speaker at various functions. Her background always …

2007-06-10 15:16 Latin America and the New Age of Mediocrity A rec...
Latin America and the New Age of Mediocrity A recent travesty in Latin American history was the failure of the Organization of American States to address Venezuela's media crisis when it assembled in Panama. If, as an Afghan saying goes, a river is muddy from its source, it is clear that a lack of leadership, both at the OAS and in its member countries, contributed to this oversight, leaving Venezuela, if not the region, vulnerable to a further erosion of press freedoms. Condoning the closure of …

2007-05-25 01:45 Is Free Speech Really at Stake Venezuela and RCTV
This is from Venezuelanalysis.com. a balanced pro-Chavez site. There is confusion about this issue, because the American media is not telling the full story. This article tells of the behavior of RCTV during the 2002 illegal coup attempt against President Chavez. RCTV didn't report in a biased manner, it played a participant role. The president of RCTV was in the palace, with the plotters. RCTV called on people to go into the streets, to overthrow Chavez. After the coup failed, RCTV stopped broa …
