2007-10-23 20:17  Nasjonalistisk stemning griper Tyrkia

2007-10-18 01:56  Oldest Embracing Lovers Found in Turkey
Two ancient skeletons found in each other's arms in a grave in Turkey might be the oldest known embracing couple, archaeologists say. The remains, believed to be those of a 30-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, were found last week in the southeastern Turkish province of Diyarbakir. The team carrying out the excavations found the remains under the floor of an ancient house at the Hakemi Use excavation site in Turkey's Bismil district. The researchers dated the skeletons to 6100 B.C., said tea …

2007-10-17 15:24  Stirring up the past, jeopardising the future
By Bronwen Maddox (THE TIMES, 17/10/07): The most extraordinary spectacle of the past week has been the apparent desire of the US Congress to pronounce as genocide the 1915 massacre of Armenians by Turks, even though there is nothing more provocative to Turkey, and no worse time at which to do it. Why take up an historic cause with such passion And why now, when the most precarious planks of US foreign policy rest on already fraying relations with Turkey It is not just the Bush Administration th …

2007-10-11 19:04  Who remembers the Armenians
I'd been quietly, if feebly, sympathetic towards some of the realpolitik concerns about the forthcoming Congressional vote on recognising the Armenian genocide. Then the Washington Post came out fighting. Apparently the resolution is "Worse than Irrelevant" The Post chuntered that Congressman Adam Schiff, the driving force behind the resolution thanks to the vociferous lobbying of US-Armenians in his California district (mere parochialism according to the Post because of course it's stupid to li …

As a musician, I'm as much of a gear-head as anybody. I can talk for hours about the tone differences in National resonator guitars, vintage Gibson mandolins, skin vs. plastic drum heads for Turkish davuls, and yet the instruments I make my living with include some of the most primitive honk-machines in the history of organology. Tomorrow I have to head out to do a gig with Muzsikas... and that means cobza, the king of dodgy stringed instruments. Fretless, difficult to handle and play, virtually …

This is my first post for the Summer Poetry Challenge, hosted by Bookeywookey. I read poetry very rarely, and don't profess to any great insights on the poetry I have selected. This challenge did appeal to me as a possible kick-start to reintroduce poetry into my life, a genre that is neglected by many. My choice of poems prior to the 1900's is 'The Mouse and the Camel' by Rumi, originally found in Rumi's most well known work, Masnavi. About Rumi: Rumi, was born on September 30, 1207 as Jelaludd …

I clip their wings because most people don't want to buy a bird that might escape so that they have to sprout their own feathers in a flash and take off in hot pursuit. Most people couldn't be bothered, you see. People make odd birds; they don't fly much." -F …
