2007-10-12 13:05  Victory for Armenians: Congress has passed resolution to recognize Armenian Holocaust
Despite Dubya's disgraceful attempts to discourage recognition of this important tragedy in history, Congress has done the right thing and has made a positive first step towards recognizing Turkey's mass murder of 1.5 million Armenians in 1915 :A U.S. House committee on Wednesday defied President George W. Bush by passing a resolution calling the 1915 massacre of Armenians genocide, a step the White House warns could damage U.S. goals in the Middle East. The measure, passed by the House Foreign …

Maybe the NY Times is coming out with a new slogan: All the future news sometimes fit for printing Turkey reacted angrily today to a House committee vote in Washington on Wednesday to condemn the mass killings of Armenians in Turkey in World War I as an act of genocide, calling the decision œunacceptable. In a rare and uncharacteristically strong condemnation, President Abdullah Gul criticized the vote by the House Foreign Relations Committee in a statement to the semi-official Anatolian News …

2007-08-24 06:13  Review of Don Garlington: An Exposition of Galatians
Interesting. I have been out of academics just long enough that I am no longer fully up to date on the state of NT and OT scholarship. Ran into this review and thought it might be interesting: The introduction covers lots of ground including: ocassion and purpose of the letter, the message of Paul's opponents and Paul's reply, the new perspective on Paul, what time is it, Galatians and Anatolian folk belief, Galatians and Pauline rhetoric, and offers an outline of the letter. In sum, Garlington …

An Exposition of Galatians ,A Reading from the New Perspective Third Edition By Don Garlington Available from Wipf and Stock This commentary is a very useful study on Paul's letter to the Galatians, useful in the sense that it has an excellent introduction, the comments are succint and clear, and it represents a very good distillation and interface with several recent dissertations on Paul and Galatians too (e.g. Steve Cummins, Roy Ciampa, Brian Dodd, Stephen Finlan, etc.). Garlington is up-to-d …

If there's one thing Turkish neighbors are known for, it's gossip. This is particularly true of the residents of my neighborhood, which despite its march toward gentrification (of which I am the grand marshall), still has a lot of "village people." This means that there are a lot of recent immigrants from the Anatolian hinterlands that have brought their tight-knit, clan-based lifestyle -- and frequently, their livestock -- with them to the big city. Walk through my neighborhood and look up at t …

The Turkish elections are over, and the Islamic-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP) walked away with a landslide, garnering nearly 47% of the vote and securing 340 of the seats in the 550 seat parliament. This is sufficient to allow the AKP to rule without needing to form a coalition government. The election was a setback to the secular establishment and the Turkish military.
