2007-11-05 21:32 Duff diplomacy
By Simon Tisdall (THE GUARDIAN, 05/11/07): Condoleezza Rice keeps pretty chirpy, but it was a gloomy weekend for US power and interests in the Middle East. Every way she looked during a flying visit to the region, hopes of progress turned to dust in her hands. From Pakistan to the occupied Palestinian territories, there is a sense of imminent unravelling born of misjudgment and long-term neglect. President-General Pervez Musharraf's "second coup" was a personal rebuff for the US secretary of sta …

2007-10-24 16:44 The script kiddie war between Sweden and Turkey threatens to escalate further
You have script kiddies on one side, and script kiddies on the other side. The result Large media headlines, a worried Swedish authority for IT-security, and possibly reputations being made to the left and right as the one set of kiddies do something to the other set of kiddies. If attention was what the kiddies wanted, then attention was what they got, and in the middle websites and webservers of ordinary innocents fall all around. The technical level for these attacks isn t very sophisticated, …

2007-10-18 01:56 Oldest Embracing Lovers Found in Turkey
Two ancient skeletons found in each other's arms in a grave in Turkey might be the oldest known embracing couple, archaeologists say. The remains, believed to be those of a 30-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, were found last week in the southeastern Turkish province of Diyarbakir. The team carrying out the excavations found the remains under the floor of an ancient house at the Hakemi Use excavation site in Turkey's Bismil district. The researchers dated the skeletons to 6100 B.C., said tea …

By Chriss Patten, the former European commissioner for external relations and chairman of the board of the International Crisis Group Crisisgroup.org (THE GUARDIAN, 17/10/07): For the third year in a row, Turkey's annual hurdles on the winding path of convergence with the EU - a progress report early next month and the European Council in December - are likely to be bruising. 2007-10-16 16:28 Turkey's War on the Truth
By Richard Cohen (THE WASHINGTON POST, 16/10/07): It goes without saying that the House resolution condemning Turkey for the "genocide" of Armenians from 1915 to 1923 will serve no earthly purpose and that it will, to say the least, complicate if not severely strain U.S.-Turkey relations. It goes without saying, also, that the Turks are extremely sensitive on the topic and, since they are helpful in the war in Iraq and are a friend to Israel, that their feelings ought to be taken into account. A …

2007-10-13 18:57 The World From Berlin: 'The West Needs Turkey as a Reliable Ally'
Tensions between the US and Turkey are growing as Ankara considers attacking PKK bases in northern Iraq and a congressional committee in Washington pushes forward a resolution calling the World War I massacre of Armenians "genocide." German commentators are concerned at the deteriorating relations between the NATO allies.

2007-10-12 20:24 Are the Dems Pushing the Armenian Genocide Bill in Backdoor Attempt to Hurt Our Efforts in Iraq
In the LA Times, Jane Harmon explains her reasoning for changing her mind on the Armenian Genocide bill she once co-sponsored. One point she made got me to thinking. I originally co-sponsored the resolution because I was convinced that the terrible crime against the Armenian people should be recognized and condemned. But after a visit in February to Turkey, where I met with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Armenian Orthodox patriarch and colleagues of murdered Turkish Armenian journalist …

2007-10-10 15:10 Hillary Clinton in 'right - for once' shocker
It did come as a bit of surprise, however Clinton - along with Barrack Obama and Nancy Pelosi - has backed "House Resolution 106, officially the Affirmation of the United States Record on the Armenian Genocide". Objections by the Bush administration are based on the likely hissy fit by Ankara, but given how remarkably unhelpful Turkey has been of late, I am not sure why Bush should be bothered, given that what's right is right .Herewith a video put together by an Armenian-American lobbying group …

2007-10-02 10:10 The Journey
The Writers Island prompt for this week is "the journey". I sat on it for a few days, then began trying to put words on paper keyboard. First I tried a heavy, ponderous approach to the journey that is our life, then a philosophical view of motherhood as a journey, and after that the way our children merely walk beside us for a while, the paths of our journeys coinciding for but a few brief years as we to raise them to walk proudly and upright into adulthood. I wrote a few sentences here, a parag …

2007-09-26 13:20 Macrostomia
The word macromastia simply means "abnormal largeness of the mouth". It is much too simple a word. Congenital macrostomia or transverse facial cleft or Tessier No 7 is a rare congenital craniofacial anomaly. Transverse facial clefts account for only 1 in 100 to 1 in 300 of all patients with facial clefts. It is estimated to occur in 1 in 80,000 live births. Males are more frequently affected than females. Bilateral involvement is rare. When unilateral, the left side is most frequently affected ( …

That's what a friend of mine -- who lived in Turkey at the same time I did -- suggested the other day. He has a point.
