2007-11-05 21:42  En koran du helst ikke m lse
The Koran is a very recondite, confusing, tedious and downright "weird" read for most Westerners. As far as substance goes, many non-Muslim critics –likely including Pope Benedict - over the centuries have maintained it adds not a single ethical teaching to those previously proclaimed by the other two Abrahamic faiths, Judaism and Christianity. As to form, most English translations leave much to be desired, and, to make matters worse, a number of Koranic-linguistic scholars claim that abou …

2007-11-05 21:07  The Iraq war has become a disaster that we have chosen to forget
By Madeleine Bunting (THE GUARDIAN, 05/11/07): "You think you are innocent, but you're not," said the British Muslim suicide bomber in the Channel 4 television drama Britz last week. As the compelling actor Manjinder Virk recited her suicide statement to camera, she went on: thousands of women and children are dying every day in Iraq and Afghanistan, and yet the governments responsible have been returned to power. Her assertion sticks in the mind because it goes straight to the heart of how we ch …

2007-11-02 09:12  Vad betyder "jihad"
Fljande r ett urval ur Shaykh Abdal Hakims bidrag till The Washington Posts serie om islam: "Jihad is an Arabic word meaning 'struggle' or 'effort'. In religious teaching, it denotes any struggle aginst the lower selfish tendencies of the ego. One dimension of this may be to stuggle against one's own selfishness and cowardice in order to defend one's people. One form of this was indicated by the Blessed Prophet when he said: 'the best form of jihad is to speak a true word to a tyrannical ruler …

2007-10-19 06:57  Known to Kabobfest
I am usually more interested in counter-culture music in the Middle East, but every once in a while you gotta give some love to the boy bands of the world. Unlike their American, British or Kuwaiti counterparts Iraqi boy band Unknown To No One (UTN1) has been through a lot: "The war followed us ," says Akhlad glumly. Now 26, he plays the jozza, a stringed instrument that gives UTN1's music an Arabic touch. Securing visas and work permits has been a problem for them everywhere. And for more than …

2007-10-19 01:38  Mama Ganoush
Last night I ate at Mama Ganoush on Chapel St in Windsor. It got a mostly positive review in the Age recently and I like using these reviews to choose restaurants. I forgot to take my camera but fortunately Deep Dish Dreams has taken some excellent photos of the food. We started with the cheesy ladies thigh pastries (below) and the kid kofte. Both were delicious though the kofte were not exceptional. We then had the zucchini stuffed with minty ricotta, which we were undecided about, and the roas …

2007-10-18 15:15  Derbyshire voted off the island...
John Derbyshire on fetishisation and Islamophobia (which does, of course exist, even if it is much less widespread than muslim "community leaders" would have you believe): Speaking of which, I have been voted off the New English Review site for being insufficiently Islamophobic. Fair enough. NER has now settled down as a definitely and strongly Islamophobic vehicle, and I'm a poor fit for it, being Islamophobophobic. In matters editorial I am anyway a believer in totalitarian despotism. I've see …

At his Angelus yesterday, the Pope pleaded for the release of two priests of the Syrian rite who were kidnapped last week in the Iraqi city of Mosul. 2007-10-15 17:57  Book
On November 20, 1979, worldwide attention was focused on Tehran, where the Iranian hostage crisis was entering its third week. The same morning the first of a new Muslim century hundreds of gunmen stunned the world by seizing Islam s holiest shrine, the Grand Mosque in Mecca. Armed with rifles that they had smuggled inside coffins, these men came from more than a dozen countries, launching the first operation of global jihad in modern times. Led by a Saudi preacher named Juhayman al Uteybi, they …

2007-10-15 15:23  Losing My Religion
By Sara *To concerned friends and family, this post isn't actually about losing my religious beliefs, mostly because I didn't really have many to lose (apologies to my parents for all the money put towards Sunday and H-school): the reason behind the not-particularly-clever title to the post is Eric has found that song titles seem to bring many hits from Google.
