2007-10-21 11:44 Redd gnostikerne

2007-10-18 16:46 UCL and the incantation bowls: Q&A in the House of Lords
Lord Renfrew of Kaimsthorn has raised the issue of the UCL report concerning the incantation bowls in the House of Lords. He received this written reply last week from Lord Davies of Oldham: The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has not received a full copy of the report relating to the collection of Aramaic incantation bowls. I understand that University College, London, returned the bowls to the Schøyen Collection.

2007-10-13 15:58 UCL and the incantation bowls
UPI reported over last weekend (" Iraqi antiquities center of British battle ", October 7, 2007) that the UCL inquiry concerning the incantation bowls from the Martin Schøyen collection took a new direction. Colin Renfrew, a member of that inquiry, is quoted as saying in response to a decision to withhold the report: "UCL tried to do the right and ethical thing by setting up a committee of inquiry. Then, when threatened with a lawsuit, in my view, it gave way under pressure". No doubt the signs …

2007-09-18 00:15 Keen Review/Riff IV: Books Without Covers
A couple of years ago, the philosophy professor Harry Frankfurt made publishing history of a sort by allowing his 7,000-word paper œOn Bullshit which lives up pretty well to the second word in its title to be published as a book. Bind some printed pieces of paper together, preferably in hard covers, distribute them via bookstores, at a cost of around $20, and voila, you have a book. If you choose not buy that one, however, you can read the paper free online. A book is thus a cultural artifact …

2007-09-04 13:05 Marc Shapiro: What Do Adon Olam and ס"ט Mean
What Do Adon Olam and ס"ט Mean [1] by By Marc B. Shapiro ס"ט 1. People often refer to me as a Modern Orthodox intellectual. There are actually quite a number of us out there. If you hear someone using words like œontological, œexistential, œmimetic, and now, œtergiversation [2] you can assume he in in our club. Also, another telltale sign is that when we give divrei Torah you will hear us refer to Philo, the Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha (if we are confident that we can pronounce the word …

2007-08-31 17:51 Food for Rosh Hashana Thought
An odd Rosh Hashana custom, duly recorded in the Talmud and halachic codes, is the lavishing of puns on holiday foods. Most Jews know that on the first night of the new Jewish year, it is customary to eat a piece of apple dipped in honey, to symbolize our hope for a sweet year. Less known is the Rosh Hashana night custom of eating foods whose names augur well for the future. Though the Talmud's examples are, of course, in Hebrew or Aramaic, at least one halachic commentary directs us to find pun …

2007-08-30 23:44 Paradigms and translation
On John's blog recently, Tom commented, There is a lot more to being a good biblical scholar than knowing a few (or even all) biblical languages. No one knew Hebrew, Aramaic, and the Bible better than the Pharisees and yet Jesus roundly condemned them for not being able to understand the Bible. I would therefore say that one's paradigm for understanding the Bible is more important than one's knowledge of Greek, Hebrew, Latin, etc. It seems that this is a common opinion and one that certain autho …

illustration courtesy http://www.sunlink.ucf.edu/presentations/fetc2004/thinking.html The recent controversy about cheaters and ethics and all the debate it caused prompted some deep reflection on my part. I don't ever feel any regrets for speaking my mind, and I don't believe I'm better than those who disagree with me. I have many Conservative friends, who I think are totally wrong on issues like the Iraq war or social legislation, yet we have found a way to agree to disagree. Despite what one …

2007-08-27 07:40 Shorthand and the Bible
The more I research shorthand the more I notice the close connection between shorthand and the Christian community. There are Bibles in shorthand, marginal notes in shorthand and, of course, many sermons were recorded in shorthand. That is how a vast quantity of books czme to be passed down to us. In Rome all school children, the boys at least, learned shorthand along with the alphabet, in order to be able to record class lectures. Senate proceedings were recorded in shorthand. And for many cent …

2007-08-27 03:02 Archaeologists discover Virgin Mary s chastity belt
Nazareth - A team of US and Israeli archaeologists have discovered the Virgin Mary's chastity belt in a grotto outside Nazareth. The belt is intact, with its rusted iron key still in the lock! Dr. Avi Levin, director of the Nazareth Center For Biblical Archaeology, said, "We have discovered the chastity belt in a grotto near the place where legend says the Jesus family lived when He was a child." The belt is inscribed in ancient Aramaic, the language of the Lord Jesus and his kin, with a motto w …

2007-08-24 14:29 recommendation for book to learn hebrew
When my son learns mishnayos he uses the English Kehati series, which he has gotten comfortable with, but I am not very happy with that. One of the big differences between my girls school s curriculum and my son s school is that the girls learn Hebrew fairly well, i.e. they can take any pasuk in chumash and identify the shorashim of words, otiyot shimuch, etc., translate the words, and manage to speak and write a fairly understandable Hebrew. The girls school tries to teach ivrit b ivrit but in …

It is the basis of meditation and devotion and concentation. 2007-08-24 09:33 Iraq and the genocide of Assyrian Christians
It is perhaps one of the great ironies of the whole Iraq debacle that President Bush and Prime Minister Blair - two of the most avowedly Christian leaders of recent times should have created a situation which has not only destabilised the entire region, but imperils the very existence of Assyrian Christians. In the liberation of the majority Shi ia from their Sunni oppressors, the Christians, who once lived and worshipped freely under the regime of Saddam Hussain, now face genocide in their own …

2007-08-24 09:10 THE MEANING OF PALESTINE by Norman Cohen
THE MEANING OF PALESTINE by Norman Cohen (Aug. 2007) Adapted from an article by David Jacobson (June 2001) "When Palestine Meant Israel" Biblical Archaeology Society, Online Archive Search The Greek word for a "wrestler" is paleistes. You can look it up. Philistines are believed to have come from a region of early Greece (Ionia, Yavan in Hebrew), probably the Isle of Crete, and were named for their favorite sport which was wrestling: the paleistes people, p'lishtim in Hebrew. 2007-08-22 05:50 Great Scott: Green with Angry
Scott Towler has returned once again, this time with an official name for his column: "Great Scott" selected in honor of an expression popularized by a slightly eccentric Hill Valley scientist named Dr. Emmett Lathrop Brown. It's also called Great Scott because Scott is descended from Ivan the Great ( as well as Ivan the Terrible) It all started with a memo that we received here at Scrubs last week encouraging all shows to "Go Green." They listed a variety of ways that we could make changes to b …

If you were to attend the annual meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature and either wander through the bookstalls or spend an hour or so with the book that lists sessions, times, and locations, one thing would surely strike you. As Tony LaRussa once told famed baseball writer George Will, "There's a lot goes on." So I want to start an approximate ten part series on knowing the currents that flow in the river called Biblical Studies. There is no rhyme nor reason to the order of these curren …

2007-08-21 01:22 Gabriel Sawma on "dhimmitude" and "abrogation"
Myrtus: (Fantastic insights on life and politics) ...In order to get to the core of the problem with modern day Islam, Mr Sawma carefully lifts the veil on the terms "dhimmi" and "abrogation", perhaps two of the most obscure terms in Muslim history, by explaining their origins and their true meanings to help everyone see the light. If anything, his masterful thesis makes prominent Muslim critics like Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Salman Rushdi look like mere fools for not doing their homework properly, bu …

2007-08-19 19:36 Empires of the Word
Nicholas Ostler's Empires of the Word is rather different from other books of linguistics that I've read. Make no mistake, it is a book of linguistics; though Ostler rarely dips into the technical jargon of the field, he does not hesitate to do so when appropriate. But Ostler approaches the field in a rather new way. (He is not alone in this approach; he mentions, in the text and the bibliography, several other authors following the same track. But it was new to me.) Let me start by quoting a su …

2007-08-19 12:05 BlogTalkers: The Curse of Being a Historian...
This week's question/request... What historical time period would you most like to visit Why Y'know how often we've been asked this... Y'know how often we've asked this of others I hate to take this literally, but I can't take it otherwise... it's a curse. Well, once I take into consideration that I want my visit to be a peaceable one, that limits my options. Because I want to understand those around me and have them understand me, there's another limitation. Because I want to stay healthy, this …

2007-08-17 02:10 Ancient Languages
I am still on a steep learning curve about the attraction of the Latin language in the liturgy. I suggested that the liturgy was originally put into Latin so that more people could understand it, and wondered if the fact that it was in Latin today didn't rather defeat that original purpose. Someone was good enough to correct me and point out that the original Latin liturgical language was not the 'vernacular language of the street' but a form of courtly and formal Latin. I liked that explanation …
