2007-11-05 08:07 The Arctic Astronauts
The Mars Analogue Research Station (MARS) Programme is an international effort spearheaded by The Mars Society to establish a network of prototype research centres where scientists and engineers can live and work as if they were on Mars, to develop the protocols and procedures that will be required for human operations on Mars, and to test equipment that may be carried and used by human mission to the Red Planet. In order to achieve these goals, operations at the Habitat Units are performed unde …

2007-11-03 11:41 Winter Is Here
The seasons pass without us being able to affect them at all. Spring is a very brief affair up in the northerner parts of Sweden, it's usually taken care of in about a month or so - from start to finish. The first tinglings usually show up here in Umeå around the end of April, and by the end of May it's full summer. I personally don't like the first part, the slush and mush that covers everything as the snow melts more quickly than it can be dissipated. But I do love the other half of it, the dr …

Changing wind patterns are an important influence on the distribution of sea ice. Throughout summer 2007, exceptional pressure and wind patterns persisted over the Arctic Ocean. The observed migration of ice cover, from the Siberian and Beau …

Par Tim King, dans France Profonde, une synthèse efficace, avec quelques exemples bien choisis, à propos des résultats de Sarkozy. Reculades, conservatisme... At home the reforms look as if they are unravelling as fast as the government is trying to push them through, indeed there has been so much back-tracking that David Martinon, one of the president s spokesmen, yesterday felt it necessary to redefine what reform means: apparently reforms are not something unpleasant that have to be swallowed …

............... In Ilulissat, 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle, the town's 4,500 residents have seen the changes firsthand. The Jakobshavn glacier, a 3-mile-wide, nearly 1 mile-thick tongue of ice that pours into the sea next to the town, has been picking up speed for years. A decade ago it flowed at between 2 and 21/2 miles a year, filling Disko Bay with icebergs that, in turn, attracted tourists. This year it flowed 9 miles - 61/2 feet an hour - adding enough freshwater to the oceans daily …

Anche uno studio della Noaa conferma lo scioglimento rapido della calotta artica: Winter and spring temperatures were all above average throughout the whole Arctic, said James Overland of NOAA. "This is unusual and looks like the beginning of a signal from global warming," Overland said in a telephone briefing. If you go back 100 years, it would be warm in one part of the Arctic and cold in another, Overland said. "We're not getting that now." Sea ice cover this year is 23 percent smaller than t …

2007-10-18 05:15 Shoestring Marketing for the One-Man Band
A wonderful tribe of strange visionaries who threw caution to the wind, flinging themselves into an economic unknown, created our American economy. I speak of the brave individuals who started their own businesses on a shoestring and a prayer. Although their ideas were often untested and they rarely had enough money to advertise - somehow, some way, enough of them made it through the night to become the employers we work for today. In admiration of their courage, I offer these marketing tips to …

2007-10-17 23:19 oh, joy, the more the merrier
[click picture] The story behind this breaking news is pretty funny. The source from which I took it was billing it as Britain jumping into the fray with Russia, and everybody else, in the Arctic and I started to fall for it... until that pesky little prefix in the actual article started boring a hole in my brain and I was forced to amend my post quickly! I'm uncertain whether to call it the Cold Cold War, the Hot Cold War or Cold War II or what... but as long as I can figure a way to keep them …

2007-10-17 07:01 Bobby Jindal s Real Record on America s Veterans and Military
LOUISIANA IS HOME TO MORE than 337,000 veterans, 55,000 of whom live in the First Congressional District, represented by Congressman Bobby Jindal. In one of his most recent television ads, Bobby Jindal defends himself against the accusations that he has voted against our veterans, implying that such a claim is absurd. Yet, at the same time, Jindal has refused to argue against any of the specifics. Here are the facts, provided by a third-party watchdog: Jindal Voted Against Giving the National Gu …

2007-10-16 02:49 Convenient Untruths
Gavin Schmidt and Michael Mann Last week, a UK High Court judge rejected a call to restrict the showing of Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth (AIT) in British schools. The judge, Justice Burton found that "Al Gore's presentation of the causes and likely effects of climate change in the film was broadly accurate" (which accords with our original assessment ). There has been a lot of comment and controversy over this decision because of the judges commentary on 9 alleged "errors" (note the quotation …

2007-10-16 01:56 Corn is King, Bible is Solid in Weekend Box
Not much newsworthy at the documentary box office this weekend aside from the strong debut of Aaron Woolf's KING CORN, which garnered nearly $7K from a single Manhattan screen (the Cinema Village), and the solid second week for Daniel Karslake's FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO, which expanded from 1 to 11 screens and averaged nearly $4K per screen. The high profile release of the weekend, Barbet Schroeder's Cannes and Toronto selection TERROR'S ADVOCATE, averaged slightly less than FOR THE BIBLE, wit …

2007-10-15 22:40 It Isn't Easy Being Green by Keith Lockitch
It isn't news that environmentalism has gone mainstream in a big way-with organic food in every grocery store, hybrid cars on every freeway, and every mass-market magazine declaring green the "new black." More than ever before, consumers are buying into environmentalist ideology-and buying products that purport to impact nature less, in order to impact nature less. One would think that serious environmentalists would be thrilled about this trend-thrilled that the public seems willing to take eco …

«[...] The main subject of this piece is the problem of climate change. This is a contentious subject, involving politics and economics as well as science. The science is inextricably mixed up with politics. Everyone agrees that the climate is changing, but there are violently diverging opinions about the causes of change, about the consequences of change, and about possible remedies. I am promoting a heretical opinion [...] [It] says that all the fuss about global warming is grossly exaggerated …

2007-10-15 00:00 Blog Action Day: It s Our Children s World.
I wrote the original version of this post back in July of this year and try as I might I couldn't come up with something that said the message I was trying to get across better than that post did. Now, with the fabled Northwest Passage open for the first time, what I was trying to get across seems to be is even more valid. So I've moved the entire post up to the front and added the new section for October 15th's Blog Action Day when over 15,000 blogs will be posting about issues relating to the …

2007-10-13 23:54 The Right Honourable Prime Minister Stephen Harper
My fellow Canadians, even before my time in public life, I have had foremost a respect for the wisdom of the electorate. True enough, I haven't always agreed with the outcome of your collective decision - and tonight, I must admit, is one of those nights - but I have accepted that when the broad consensus of an election night is reached, it is surely the Canadian people who know what's best for Canada, not me. I won't pretend that I am not disappointed with tonight's results; I can't pretend tha …

OTTAWA, August 12 -- Political pundits called it an even fight, but that didn't stop all party leaders and media representatives from claiming victory in last night's English-language debates. "I believe Stephen Harper articulated a compelling vision of Canada, distinct from the tired, old rhetoric of the other party leaders," said Conservative media representative Steve Naylor. "He faced the attacks by the other party leaders and showed a statesmanlike bearing as he took them down one by one." …
