2007-10-22 21:29  Godless Educrats
The Atlantic's 150th Anniversary issue arrived at my house last week, and I've been leafing through the selection of short essays at the front about "The Future of the American Idea." The quality varies a lot--Edward O. Wilson's 400 words are a model of economy and clarity, the policiticians, not so much. One of the contributors is Tim LaHaye, minister and author of the best-selling "Left Behind" series. Given the chance to say anything he wanted about religion and America, he decided to focus h …

2007-10-15 03:55  Lionboy's Unflattering Picture of America
It's ironic that Zizou Corder 's Lionboy trilogy became a bestselling series in the US since the books are, with little padding to soften the blow, anti-American. Oh, sure, they say that The Simpsons will still be showing in the near future, when these books take place, and The Simpsons are a great gift from America to world culture. But the USA in these books appears mostly as "the Empire Homelands" looming on the west of the Atlantic. That geopolitical picture is especially striking when I com …

On August 21, 2007 state-run Voice of Russia reported on the Russian Air Force's revived combat-ready status: Russian planes are on a combat mission in the most far-away geographic regions, having dummy missiles, not nuclear weapons, on board, as the deputy commander of the Russian long-range air force Anatoly Zhikharev said. The flights began on August 17th, after the 1992 break, by the decision of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief President of Russia. The flights take place over the Atlantic, Pac …

2007-10-07 03:29  hope is the feeling you have that the feeling you have isn't permanent
Multiple weeks of long-distance separation from my wife are difficult.  Suffering with this lung-shredding ailment is difficult.  I'm fairly confident in my ability to handle any two or three of {day-job, illness, school-projects, business-travel} -- but the four in conjunction seem insurmountable.  Adding insult to injury, my MasterCard number was apparently involved in some sort of batch-fraud scheme, necessitating cancellation and reissuance.  Important to keep things in perspective, to ackno …

1922 : You and I were doing the jitterbug on the wing of Lindy's plane with Zelda Fitzgerald knee-deep in a vat full of bathtub gin, but P. G. Wodehouse was writing, writing, writing. And he had a good head start on it, too: I flipped to the copyright page and double-checked: yes, The Girl on the Boat was published in 1922. Off the top of your head you almost want to say "Yeah, that's one of Wodehouse's early novels." But keep in mind: by this point he had been a published author for twenty year …

2007-09-07 13:07  The Wisdom of Light: The Hiroshi Sugimoto Retrospective at the De Young Museum
Hiroshi Sugimoto Union City Drive In, Union City 1993 Photography is, by definition, about the interaction between time and light. In Hiroshi Sugimoto's photographs we are able to engage in a conversation with light. In a very real way, he opens the light to us. He lets the light speak to us in a way that would be impossible in any other medium. Sometimes the light is fast like in the Seascapes and the dioramas where the exposure time is some small fraction of a second. In other work the light i …

2007-09-04 08:08  Notes: Slouching Towards Utopia 7.7: The World in 1900: Colonization
Colonization What effect did this enormous expansion in world trade have on standards of living across the globe Some believe that the explosion in world trade (and in international migration) put substantial downward pressure on the wages of labor in the labor-scarce land- and resource-rich parts of the periphery (North America, the southern cone of South America, Australia and New Zealand), gave a boost to real wages in labor-abundant Europe, and raised the returns to owners of capital on both …

2007-09-03 04:44  Harry Potter and the Imperial Legacy
I've discussed how Jonathan Stroud 's magnificent Bartimaeus trilogy and Philip Reeve 's lotsa-fun Larklight reflect, in different ways, on Britain's imperial past. What about the British fantasy series that now towers above all others in bringing the world's wealth into the kingdom How do the Harry Potter books treat the legacy of the British Empire To begin with, J. K. Rowling is quite inclusive in her portrayal of Britishness. Hogwarts students include Seamus Finnigan, Cormac McLaggen, Parvat …

After his Atlantic contract ended, Ray signed with ABC-Paramount in November 1959. He obtained a much more liberal contract than other artists had at that time. With the success of his Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music, Ray gained new fame and financial security. His succeeding contract with ABC gave him more control over his creations. All master recordings were to revert to him at the conclusion of his contract.     With his continued successful recordings and expanded personal …

2007-09-01 20:14  The Rabies Principle
THE FINEST DESCRIPTION of the precautionary principle that I've ever heard came from David Gee of the European Environment Agency in a speech before a convocation of environmental ministers in Belgium. After arguing that benefit of the doubt should be granted to public health rather than to the things that threaten it, Gee said that precaution helps us avoid, during times of uncertainty, the construction of "pipelines of unstoppable consequences." Gee's remarks were met with stout applause. On t …

2007-08-31 20:56  Friday Morning Quarterback
A weekly primer. And gimme a break, it’s morning somewhere. - - - I guess it’s one thing to know how ugly a game can be, another to actually watch it unfold. Mississippi State in a microcosm: facing fourth-and-one just inside LSU territory, down a mere 10-0 in the first quarter, on one of its only somewhat positive drives of the night and desperately needing to make this makeable play, Michael Henig emerged from a key timeout and promptly fumbled away the snap. Later in the half, with the ball a …
