Matt Yglesias writes :              People often note that there appears to be a more vigorous debate over Israel's approach to the Israeli-Arab conflict in the mainstream Israeli press than there is in the mainstream American press. This is, however, the kind of judgment that it's hard for a casual American observer to make with much confidence. Writing in International Security, however, Jerome Slater takes a more systematic comparison of coverage of the conflict in The New York Times and in H …

I cannot believe it! Meat pies and tomato sauce (ketchup!) are a thing of Australian lives. 'specially Mrs Macs ones :) As I delve more and more on LJ the language barrier is broadened. Eg Cell phone = mobile phone, tires = tyres, shore = beach, diaper = nappy. The english language is strange.

Guest Commentary by Edward Cline: As years go by the idea of Nobel Prizes for peace and literature becomes more and more lunatic. The criteria by which literature is measured and recognized by the Norwegian Nobel Committee remain unfathomable to an outside but critical observer. This year the Prize for literature went to Doris Lessing, a British author who wrote stories with ever-in-vogue feminist themes. But the individuals who screen nominees and award the Prizes for literature could just as w …
