2007-10-25 02:10 Nintendo Hires Two New Executives
You may have heard, Nintendo were short a few senior executives. Needed fresh blood. So they've gone out and got some! As expertly speculated, Yahoo's Cammie Dunaway (pictured) will be coming onboard as executive vice president, sales & marketing ( Reggie's old job, before he got shuffled upstairs last year ), while Shigeyuki Takahashi, formerly of Nintendo Research Inc. (business research, not product research) has been brought over to the US to serve as NoA's executive vice president, special …

2007-10-21 17:27 Naming Names at Gitmo
Well into the night of Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, lt. Cmdr. Matthew Diaz sat alone at his desk in the headquarters of the American detention center at Guantnamo Bay, Cuba, consumed with a new project. He often worked late. From the time Diaz enlisted in the Army as a 17-year-old high-school dropout, hard work had been his ticket. He had earned his college degree while serving as an artillery sergeant and then completed law school a semester early, driving a mail truck on the weekends. In 10 years as …

2007-10-17 20:31 Ideas, smart and stupid, about blogs and journalism
A Los Angeles Times article by Alana Semuels (Oct. 9) discusses the widening intersection of blogging and journalism: The blurred lines make many uneasy. "There's a lot of uninformed opinion on the Internet and not a lot of solid reporting," said Fred Brown, vice chairman of the Society of Professional Journalists' ethics committee and a columnist at the Denver Post. A professional journalist "respects the truth and lives up to standards of ethics. Certainly that isn't the case in the blogospher …

2007-10-17 12:56 The Boston Freedom Trail is a Harsh Mistress
Once again, I was wearing a wrong kind of shoe. I don't think I will ever learn. The Boston Freedom Trail is a red trail of bricks that marches you through several miles of downtown Boston, and drags you past all the most important historical sites along the way. Along the way, you see Paul Revere's grave, his house, and the church where he (or someone else, actually) hung those signal lanterns. Grave: House: You see statues of Paul Revere. You look at the X-rays from Paul Revere's last hairline …

2007-10-16 20:20 Schools as Scapegoats
Larry Mishel and Richard Rothstein have written a long piece for The American Prospect titled "Schools as Scapegoats," which is a good summary of the labor-centered critique of education reform. They make some good points, but I think their larger takes on the political and the policy implications are deeply misguided. First, the good points. A Nation at Risk was released 24 years ago on a wave of scare-mongering about public education--if we don't reform the schools, people said, the economic c …

2007-10-15 15:02 Travels With Kinzie
My roommate and dear friend B10N is leaving me today for a jaunt around the country with her irrepressible terrier Kinzie. I will miss them very much. I'd say it's gonna be great to have the place to myself because I can walk around naked, but I do that when I'm not home alone as it is. While I will undoubtedly enjoy having my swingin' bachelor pad, there is sure to be less laughter in the place until the girls return. The ladies will record their travels at the following address - Travels With …

Mullah Richard SSPX bishop (excommunicated from the Catholic Church) Richard Williamson has graced us once more with a letter, via Fr. Z. After such popular favorites as arguing why women shouldn't wear pants or go to college comes a statement against female Doctors of the Church. Amazing is that he's mastered time travel, seeing as his arguments come straight from the Stone Age. (Update: The GEICO cavemen called to complain, stating they refuse to be associated with Williamson). Reading the com …

2007-10-13 13:22 Sunday Scribblings: "First job, Worst job, Dream job, Fantasy job"
This week's prompt for Sunday Scribblings asks us to elaborate on our job history, goals, and desires associated with jobs. I do have to say this should be a rather fun post. I am quite sure that my first job and my worst job are pretty much one in the same. I was working as a fry cook at the local Kentucky Fried Chicken. I worked there for four days. Now, before you think I have zero work ethic, there is a viable reason why I would only work at a place for four days. My first day on the job was …

2007-10-12 07:32 Barriers to Higher Education
Students from low income and poor families are far less likely to get a college education than those from middle and upper income families. Fewer than 9% of low-income students earn bachelor's degrees by the age of 24, compared with 75% of higher income students who earn a degree by the same age. This has to change, as higher education is an important aspect of human development, economic growth, and equality, and is crucial to our society s dynamic needs. Last week the Center on Equality, Plura …

Q1 - Death and Taxes : When a successful business or corporation shows an interest in relocating to a new city, town or municipality, if the business in question employs a fair amount of people or generates a significant amount of business or prestige for the local area, city officials will often woo or entice the company by offering significant tax breaks. Similarly, when a successful company indicates that it may move its headquarters or manufacturing facilities to another locale, officials of …

2007-10-11 14:46 Does Washington show us Utah's future
A report in today's Washington Post says that the small voucher program funded by the federal government in Washington, D.C., is putting schoolchildren at risk there. I'm not unfairly describing the article; the headline reads, "Voucher Program Puts D.C. Kids at Risk, Study Says." And the study was conducted not by a "think tank" but by the federal government itself, the U.S. General Accounting Office. It is apparently important to the federal government, which funded the small program in the na …

2007-10-11 11:35 A degree in housewifery. Yes, really
And if you are female, you can sign up for it at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. Well, technically it is a course rather than a degree (but "counts toward a bachelor of arts in humanities "), but that would have made for a duller headline, and Americans being Americans, they call it 'homemaking', but otherwise the tale is as advertised. More here .

2007-10-10 14:00 The George appeal: Why women go crazy for a man that won't commit
What is it with George Clooney It seems every girl wants to date him, every guy wants to be him and every singleton (and smug married) wants to know what the heck is the secret to his appeal. Is it that silver hair That dreamy voice That oh-so-sexy smile Personally, I don't see the big deal. Sure, he's ridiculously good-looking, has an Oscar, owns a private jet and is best buds with Matt Damon. Sure, everyone from Nicole Kidman to Julia Roberts and even Michelle Pfeiffer want to bag him, bed him …

2007-10-09 02:22 After the Leaves Fall
Baart, Nicole. 2007. After the Leaves Fall. Waiting is a complicated longing. I lost my father when I was fifteen, and I've been waiting ever since. He was buried on a rainy day in October, and I remember the sound of the raindrops on the lid of the sleek black casket and how it seemed like music to me. The pastor was doing his best to make sorrowful an occasion that seemed anything but--the leaves on the trees above us were burnt amber, the consoling sky around us was velvety gray, and the rain …
