2007-10-19 16:11 Friday Podcast Alert: Marzipan Taco
Every now and then, I like being reminded that people can be really stupid, and stupid people can be really, really funny. That being said, new podcast Marzipan Taco has had me giggling through its past two episodes that illustrate that very point, The Starbucks Barista Challenge and Let's Call an Agent. I guess you can say these guys are looking out for you by keeping the people responsible at the backend of many people's regular routines - coffee and movies - accountable for their actions whil …

2007-10-16 21:47 ConfirmHuman: The CAPTCHA Alternative
I was referred to check out this article Preventing spam without using a CAPTCHA and it reminded me that I too had created an alternative method of preventing spam robots from signing up on my sites. I found that sometimes the CAPTCHA failed and that there had to be another way to prove that someone is human. I imagine that the bot writers are constantly updating their algorithms for screen readers to try to read CAPTCHAs, or they are finding ways to crack the popular CAPTCHAs. I don't doubt tha …

2007-10-12 15:40 Is WISP the new LAMP
I certainly think it could be. For those of you who may not know what I'm barking on about - it's all about the web. Well, to be more specific, it's about W indows, I IS, S QL and P HP, as oppose to L inux, A pache, M ySQL and P HP. Notice the common factor in both of those; the P, for PHP. This time last year, Microsoft and Zend announced a technical collaboration to enhance the experience of running the PHP scripting language on Windows Server however, just recently, as we get closer to the …

2007-10-12 05:48 When Do We Get The Third Stage Of VoIP
Tom Evslin has a very interesting post looking back at the predictions he made keynoting Jeff Pulver's VON conference ten years ago, and noticing that of his three stages of the VoIP adoption path, the third never happened. Evslin predicted that the first area of VoIP adoption would be the straight arbitrage play of offering cheaper calls on the backend, especially for international calls. That absolutely happened. The second stage of VoIP adoption would be to move the calls to the internet, rat …

2007-10-11 23:38 @ Mipcom: Interview: Edward Boddington, CEO, Harvest Media Group: Call-TV Loses £200 Million
The wave of scandals in the UK's participation TV trade has wiped up to £200 million off the industry in a year, according to the man who runs the voting solution for the Pop Idol and American Idol franchise. Edward Boddington, founder of Harvest Media Group and its dominant US subsidiary Telescope (which pioneered the interactive format and manages the voting for The X-Factor ), told paidContent:UK the scandals had knocked revenue in such businesses from £300 million last year to just £100 mill …

2007-10-05 20:06 Why did you do it like that
This morning one of my colleagues in my office bay started a discussion about the fine line between divulging useful technical information on this blog-o-sphere while maintaining the confidentiality of technical information, product plans and general intellectual property of IBM. I explained to him that I think of this as I would a customer forum. That is, when I wonder if I should be talking about something I consider if I'd discuss it freely when visiting, or with visiting customers who are no …

2007-09-22 15:35 eBrand Theme: Run your own online magazine
eBrand Marketing's theme is now available for public download. Due to a lot of enquiries about how I got this theme, and whether people could download them, I have decided to pack it and put it up for all to download and use, for free. This theme is very suitable for running an online magazine type of websites using Wordpress user-friendly backend. Notice the frontend design of having multiple columns and listing of unique posts from different categories at the bottom, it's something very rare t …

2007-09-11 19:27 Strategies for Improving Enterprise Search
It's common for enterprise website developers to implement search engines with out-of-the-box functionality, point it at their content repositories, and then just leave it at that. Search is becoming something of a neglected orphan, in part because packaged search products are relatively easy to implement, and then even more easily forgotten. Unfortunately, the results are too often plagued by problems. You know something's gone wrong when a perfectly clear query returns results that are not onl …

2007-09-11 08:54 Dropping AJAX in TDO Mini Forms v0.7
Do you really want or need AJAX in TDO Mini Forms The only reason I used ajax originally in TDO Mini Forms plugin was to get around the problem of a "double submit", where once you've submitted your post and then you reload the page, the post gets submitted twice. I also thought it would be the only way to do a "preview". However, as I'm doing my code refactoring for the next version of the plugin, I built up the form normally using POST and properly corrected the double submit issue. It also no …

2007-09-07 18:23 Re: Using Virtualization for DR
Chris posted an interesting solution to provide 3DC disaster recovery, yet only having local virtualization devices. I posted a couple of responses to this question, and commented that this is a complex area of I/O flow and I would describe here how SVC ensures the remote site is - what we call - consistent. That is, the remote site must always contain a useable copy of the data, which may be slightly behind the local site when asynchronous replication (GlobalMirror) is used. However this does r …

2007-09-04 19:47 FCC Not Convinced To Just Hand Over Spectrum To Startup In Exchange For Potential Future Profits
In May of 2006, a VC-backed startup called M2Z petitioned the FCC to hand over some spectrum for free in exchange for a cut of future potential revenues. As you're probably quite aware, the FCC has been focused lately on auctioning off slices of spectrum to private companies for use in various wireless projects. The spectrum seems to only be getting more and more valuable as demands for potential wireless applications and services increase. Of course, as we've seen in the past, these spectrum au …

We did it! We cut over to our new site yesterday and everything is working great! We realized, iPhone not withstanding, that most of our members will be using SMS and the web site, v. using the mobile web site (m.padpaw.net or padpaw.mobi). So, we concentrated on diverging and improving the desktop site. Its easier to navigate and takes advantage of the larger screen size, javascript, etc.. The other major improvement is our SMS integration. We now have an official shortcode working in addition …

2007-09-01 20:57 A Brief Interlude
Entry #4 After my last rambling post, I thought I'd post a brief followup regarding the tendency toward airport security fascism. Apparently, Illusionist Penn (of Penn and Teller), met with a hassle when recently flying out of Las Vegas, and he has posted an account of his experience on his weblog .Credit being due where it is due, I originally found this link on Adam Curry's Weblog. This brings to mind another interesting thought. I told a friend of mine about my journal, and he said "So you're …
