2007-09-30 13:17 The Spectrum
Last month, an unexpected but welcome invitation to speak on Journalism Ethics at the The 4th Spectrum Fellowship: National Campus Journalism Conference came. Since it was conveniently in the last week of the semester, I readily said yes even as I thought it would be a good opportunity to catch up on some old friends there. The Fellowship was held last weekend from Sept. 27-29 at the La Salle University campus in Bacolod. My talk was on day 2, right after Vim Navarro, who trained the student jou …

2007-08-29 16:31 The Philippine national football team
Did you know we DO actually have a football team. The team is based in Bacolod City and is managed by the Philippine Football Federation. Pinoy football is not what you think it is. It's not a Peyton Manning - But a David Beckham - Soccer, more popularly known outside the U.S. as the football, is what Filipinos are more into. At least that's what our Phys Ed introduced it to its students. Outside of following the annual National Football League championship games on satellite, football was never …

2007-08-24 11:35 Look! Mrs. Fields baked the best cookies for me!
Last Tuesday, I flew from Bacolod City via Philippine Airlines only with one thing in my mind: the launch of Mrs. Fields Cafe along UN Avenue in Manila. So when the plane touched down, I immediately went home in Pasay City, left my bags, and rushed to the new and hip ...

For the Nth time, I'm back to my dear hometown. The city of Bacolod. I attended the funeral service for my uncle early this morning, and I am just taking a good rest the whole afternoon. I have always been flying via Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific, but admittedly, yesterday's ...

2007-08-23 12:21 Whiling away the hours...
I just realized I've deviated from the type of blogger that reports his or her day. I used to do this but I guess I've become more of a private person. Either that, I've just gotten lazy or my life has become boring. So, some random stuff: Thursday for me usually means a visit to the derma in Market Market. Derma sessions aren't what they used to be since I switched clinics, the present one the derma of one of my cousins-in-law who used to be on TV a lot (and who I thought has extremely flawless …

2007-08-23 00:48 FBI Seeks Information on Men Who Behaved Suspiciously on Seattle Ferries
Their odd behavior was noted by several people during a period spanning several weeks: FBI agents in Seattle have asked the public to help identify two men spotted behaving in an "unusual" manner during several trips on the nation's largest ferry system. Federal officials released a pair of photos of the men to the public Monday after they were shown to employees of the ferry system. The two men appear to be of Middle Eastern descent and are seen standing against the rail of a Washington State F …

2007-08-22 10:14 My Little BLOG BOOK
Welcome to my 430 th blog post over the past 373 days. I had one aborted attempt in February 2006, and completely forgot about blogging, until Anton and Ajay ,my mentors, convinced me to give it another try. They were and are great; constructive, supportive, and kind. But they forgot to supply the toilet paper. They should have, because thanks to them, I've now got BLOG DIARRHEA. And to take the "paper" analogy one step further, the time has come to publish my blog for the supreme embarassment o …

My dear Blog, I m sorry. I couldn t really make it as I ve wished No matter how I ve tried, there is always an activity of more urgency which gets my time. As I m leaving today for Manila, and really not sure when I ll be back three, four weeks I now sneak in to inform you about it. I have so many interesting sharing lined up, especially on my unique birthday celebration last August 11 even before this, about our (with the Carmelite Missionaries and CMS youth) visit to the Home for the Blind …

2007-08-09 12:31 City of Smiles
My favourite story this week concerns the city of Bacolod in the Philippines, which known as the CIty of Smiles thanks to its beaches, cuisine and non-existent crime rate. It turns out the city's mayor is actively seeking to establish a 'special frienship' with Croydon after he bonded with one of our councillors over a late-night karaoke session. I'm saying nothing about whether Croydon is the best 'twin' for the City of Smiles, but luckily our readers are far happier to go on the record - see p …

2007-08-07 12:53 Ysabella's Chicken
I was disappointed with Ysabella's chicken, the chicken dish featured in ABS-CBN's telenovela Ysabella and only available at Bacolod Chicken Inasal (BCI). Not because it was no good, it was all right actually but because my expectations were really high. I was expecting a palate surprising, mouthwatering dish that I would instantly think of coming back for. I was expecting a dish that Maricel Laxa would steal the recipe of, Rosanna Roces would die for, Coney Reyes would hurt someone for and woul …

2007-08-07 00:52 Papa goes to Malacanang
And I'm so jealous. Every year, the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) conducts a search for the towns and cities with the best disaster management and humanitarian assistance programs. The "Gawad Kalasag" aims to recognize the outstanding performance of Disaster Coordinating Councils (DCCs) in the provincial, city, municipal and barangay levels. This year the Municipality of Pontevedra won the National Award in the 3rd Class Municipality category. I am proud to say that my father, …

2007-08-06 18:07 Where to stay during the Bacolod Masskara Festival 2007
Getting a decent place to stay during a festival is not easy. I have also experienced this several times before when I went to the Dinagyang Festival. And for those who have been emailing me about the accomodations in Bacolod City for the upcoming 2007 Masskara Festival, Here's a list I have compiled from the Bacolod City website. While the Silver Masskara Foundation is still finalizing the official schedule of activities of Masskara, which is going to be on October 1-21, 2007 browse through the …

Actor is easy to work with. Dated today, 1.41pm. He didn t have work on the first shooting day, Friday; still he went to the set, the staffer recounted. He was just there to observe how we worked and to watch his [Japanese] co-star, Takuya Kimura. RED ALERT, RED ALERT! Takuya Kimura is in the country! Of course, Angel is in Bacolod, Kalen is still in Taiwan, and Sai has boyfriend. Gaddemmet, Harem Trained! It would've been so easy! We could have stormed the place disguised as Mindanao sepe …

2007-08-03 04:45 What I Learned In A Field of Sugar Cane
I've already talked at length about some of the things we did over in the Philippines; but I've not addressed the greatest lesson I learned. The man who taught me the most was a man named Pastor Rey. While we were in the Philippines, Pastor Rey had a stroke. It's his third stroke in two years. Pastor Rey has never had enough money to get a CT scan to find out what's causing the strokes. Every day, he walks from his thatched hut in the middle of a sugar cane field, down a pitted road to a bus sto …

2007-08-03 04:02 Calea - 2nd Serving
My first encounter with Calea was probably ten years ago. I remember they used to have this brownie which they call ecstasy sinful. It was a name with a recall. I have not experience using ecstasy but I can imagine some years back in our college dormitory, they served brownies with marijuana. Nope! I did not tried that, but some friends who got high on that, later confessed that they thought that they have encountered pleasure and death. .. later depression. Now I am not sure if that definition …
