Finland had rejected a similar request earlier and only then was Eston …

2007-10-17 03:21 Any port in a storm: or more odd reasons for forgetting the Armenians again.
Amidst suggestions that Nancy Pelosi will in fact put the Armenian Genocide resolution in her pocket, it's been quite something to see so many self-styled liberals shake their heads and mutter that, you know, while we feel for the poor Armenians - and please, don't for a moment doubt the seriousness of our compassion - that feeling does extend to doing anything other than cave to Turkey' desire to muddy historical waters that are plenty clear enough (and have been for 90 years) to most reasonabl …

2007-10-16 16:26 The Future Calling In Estonia
By Anne Applebaum (THE WASHINGTON POST, 16/10/07): From outside, the offices of Skype – the company best known for its free Internet phone service - don't look very different from the other Soviet and post-Soviet buildings that make up the nondescript suburbs of the Estonian capital. But inside, the aesthetic influence of Northern California is undeniable. The high-tech, open-plan offices; the "playroom," complete with pool table and sauna; the young, bearded employees; the Dadaesque plast …

2007-10-15 04:46 Baltic Sea is suffering from several environmental problems
Foto: Micke-fi Today is Blog Action Day. Lets make a statement for an improved environment. The focus is on climate but it is not the only environmental problem our lifestyle leads to. Baltic Sea is a brackwater sea which are under severe pressure from the surrounding countries. The politicians talk endlessly that something must be done. Still we see how ships empty their tanks in it and the surrounding agriculture are spewing out nutrition that also make algae grow rapidly in the Baltic Sea. We …

Here are some brief excerpts from Interpol 's online information about Heroin .Afghanistan: The Golden Crescent The UNODC estimates opium cultivation in Afghanistan increased 59 percent in 2006 to a record 165,000 hectares. US government estimates for the same time period suggest 172,600 hectares were used for poppy cultivation.
Danielle Pergament skriver i New York Times om Fårö The Enchanted Island That Bergman Called Home WHEN Ingmar Bergman died on July 30, he left behind three Academy Awards, a legacy …

Since its self-directed "collapse" on Christmas Day 1991, the Soviet Union has hid behind the mask of the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Eurasian Economic Community (EEC). These alliances include all of the Not-So-Former Soviet republics, except the Baltic states, in either full or observer status. Georgia and Azerbaijan do not hold membership in the EEC, which evolved from the CIS Customs Union. In New Lies for Old (1984) and The Perestroika Deception (1995, 1998) KGB defector Anato …

http://www.economist.com/ HORROR FILMS Sep 27th 2007 WHY EASTERN EUROPE NEEDS HOLLYWOOD "KATYN", the new film by Andrzej Wajda, Poland's best-known director, should leave you shaken and sleepless. It is worth seeing just for the scene in which the senate of Cracow University is arrested en masse by the Nazi occupiers, as well as for as the almost unbearably realistic execution scenes in which Soviet murder squads kill 22,000 captured officers, and also for the way it portrays the attempts by the …

2007-09-29 18:30 The Russian scout Novik
I see that William Hovgaard credited the Russian scout Novik, lost in the Russo-Japanese War, with a 26 knot speed. That was achieved, apparently, by using a very light hull structure and destroyer-like machinery. The hull was even shaped like a German torpedo boat, as the ship was built by the German firm Schichau, at Elbing in the Baltic. The ship had some problems, as the steering gear was unprotected and the hull lacked a double bottom to save weight. The unprotected steering gear resulted i …

2007-09-21 17:21 Super is as super does
A friend forwarded me this interesting article by Dennis Ross in the New Republic on why we should be paying more attention to Russia. I have to say, that I certainly agree that we should be paying more attention to Russia. And I think that he gets some stuff very right: (continued below the fold) Russia tends to pale in comparison to these other concerns [unrest in the Middle East, the rise of China, climate change, etc.], and the tendency will be to pay it little heed. That would be a mistake. …

2007-09-19 21:03 Home improvement with a side of knitting
First the knitting since a) that is ostensibly why you visit and b) it has been sorely lacking from the blog lately. That's part of the problem with designing...you can't show the projects on the blog. First I have some great hiking socks for Jim (did I mention he has size 12 feet) I thought I might submit this pattern to the winter knitty but then I read a comment on a blog about how "everyone and their cousin" is a sock designer lately which made me reconsider. The pattern isn't quite as " …

Three times I took photos of these three yarns on my favorite banana leaf appetizer plate and bowl. And this morning, outside on the patio was the one time things turned out the least bit presentable. I also hoped to be able to take a new picture of me in my new glasses and short hair (the short hair has been around for several months) for Ravelry and my "about me" pages. However, after finding an actually cool pair of frames at Lenscrafters last night (Versace!), they didn't have the lenses wit …

Corey over at 10,000 birds recently posted a nice piece on a mystery Calidris sandpiper he saw in August here .The identification problem he encountered received a lot of attention and even made it onto David Sibley's new blog, as can be seen here .Corey's main problem was not that he was quite understandably puzzled by the bird out in the field and wasn't able to put an ID on it (like food on his family), but that he reacted to this situation like everyone else today: he digiscoped the bird and …

2007-09-06 02:17 Fear the Canadian Menace
All indications suggest that the Royal Navy will press ahead with its plans to build Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales, a pair of 65000 ton aircraft carriers that will be the largest ships the Royal Navy has ever operated. I have to wonder, though, what the point of having 65000 ton carriers is if the Canadians can sink them. To the left is an actual photo taken of HMS Illustrious from HMCS Corner Brook: Had [submarine HMCS] Corner Brook been a hostile, rather than a participant in NATO's exer …

2007-09-05 06:29 Let the Flemish People Go
A quote from Jean Quatremer, the correspondent of the French daily Libération in Brussels, on the Libération blog, 3 September 2007 Contrary to what is often said, the possible Flemish independence would not contradict the European principle. [ ] There is no precedent of a [European] Union member state breaking up into two or more independent states: the separation of Czechoslovakia, the Baltic states or Yugoslavia happened before they joined the Union. The fact that there would be two new sta …
