2007-10-05 21:24  Free "Brown" Studio in Bromo Selzer Building!
I got an email, advertising a competition for a free studio in the new Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower, sponsored by C. Sylvia and Eddie C. Brown. Sounds like a great deal, right A free studio in a new building rennovated for artists Sweet. Over the past few months, I have heard a lot about these studios being available. The Urbanite even did a feature on it this month, but I've never taken it seriously, as a real possibility for a studio space. The studios cost between $400 and $1500 per month and are …

From the Getty Museum's website : Los Angeles launched the career of Edward Weston (1886 1958), the subject of the current exhibition Edward Weston: Enduring Vision and a creative visionary who has been described as "the quintessential American artist/photographer of his time" Weston lived in the greater Los Angeles area from 1906 to 1923, establishing his own photographic business, marrying and having four children, and coming to grips with modern art for the first time. In 1923 Weston left for …

2007-08-31 13:52  South Street Seaport
The South Street Seaport historic district in lower Manhattan is NYC's offering as a real tourist area, resembling other marketplaces such as the Harborplace of Baltimore, Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston, Market East in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 6th Street Marketplace in Richmond, Virginia, Portside Festival Marketplace in Toledo, Ohio, and Bayside Marketplace in Miami, Florida. The cloned look of the aforementioned is not a coincidence. They were all done by the Rouse Company, a pioneer in …

2007-08-29 04:01  Rent this Space
In today s world, anything that is out in the public eye is fair game to have a corporate logo or name pasted on it. The glasses of that well-dressed professor down the hall that elegantly declare œVersace whenever he turns to the side. The jerseys of the Chelsea football team playing on ESPN2. The bags from the department store that only catch a glimpse of daylight before being thrown in the trunk. For a price, anything can be turned into advertizing space. As the New York Times reported Mond …

2007-08-25 02:08  Everyone back in the pool!: From artiodactyl to cetacean
[Note: This post isn't quite as comprehensive as I would have liked, and I want to add some more illustrations from my other computer, so don't be surprised if it changes a bit over the weekend. Still, I hope you enjoy it!] When I was in the 4th grade, I took one of my first trips to the National Aquarium in Baltimore, MD, and I was absolutely in awe of the building and the creatures it contained. Although I can't remember much from that early visit, I do recall one particular exhibit on the 2nd …

2007-08-25 00:01  VACATION!
So on Friday we went to Harrisburg, and helped Chris' sister and her boyfriend move into their new apartment. They've got a really nice place. We left on Sunday and headed for Baltimore! My favorite fish at the aquarium was the perching fish. It really perched on the coral! After Baltimore we went to DC and stayed with my Grandma. Monday was the Holocaust museum, the Renwick gallery and lots of walking. We took a break on a bench and saw it as a good photo op.. On Tuesday we stopped at Sticky Fin …

Its hard for me to see Carroll County Commissioner Julia Gouge's comments as anything other than poorly hidden racism .Carroll residents would vehemently oppose transit buses between Baltimore City and the county, a county commissioner says.    œThe average person here in Carroll County doesn t want to see something coming from Baltimore City, Julia Gouge said. œPeople would have a fit. She said opposition stems from residents desire to preserve the county s rural character. Rural character …

2007-08-23 15:08  Utah's Chris Tunis goes to Washington
By Chris Tunis These are some observations on our family s trip to Washington D.C. running from A ugust 4 to August 11, 2007. My main impression is that one could spend a month in Washington and not see all the sights you wanted to see. There is just so much history and culture that it s impossible to get around to observe everything in a week. Yet, I think we did fairly well, as you will see. Going back to D.C. convinced me that people are really working hard in government, and that those gover …

2007-08-15 14:54  The Babe, Bill Jenkinson, and the Red Sox
During the aforementioned trip to Baltimore, I had the opportunity to hear baseball historian Bill Jenkinson, the author of The Year Babe Ruth Hit 104 Home Runs, give a talk at the Sports Legends Museum, near Camden Yards. Keenly aware of the many Sox fans in the area, Jenkinson focused on the Babe's connections to Boston. We know, of course, that Ruth played here in Rhode Island for the Providence Grays before going on to star as a left-handed pitcher for the Red Sox. But Jenkinson talked up ho …

2007-08-15 07:17  Yahoo Tactics Associating Geographic Search with Searcher Location
Can a search engine guess where someone is searching from based upon the query being used A patent granted to Yahoo today, originally filed in 2003, explores that question. Many site owners have tied site visitors to locations by looking at those visitors' IP addresses, and mapping those to a particular place. That could be helpful on a country level, but much less reliable at a city level. Why be concerned with knowing where someone is connecting from It could be helpful in providing local serv …

THE SIMPSONS MOVIE On its journey to the big, wide screen, The Simpsons Movie has largely contented itself to expanding its familiar, beloved, vitally American universe of characters to fit the wingspan of the Panavision frame, and of course to making jokes about what works in the movies that doesn t so much on TV (spectacle, more detailed animation, full frontal nudity, for example), as well as hurling barbs at those who would pay $10 to see what they could ostensibly get for free on the airwav …

2007-08-09 15:02  It's Weird Down Here!
It was another beautiful day, and we decided to have a "vacation" in Baltimore one day at a time. We recently visited Fell's Point, and this day it was our own Inner Harbor .  We slipped into a convenient parking space and proceeded to act like tourists, enjoying the sights along the waterfront. The dragon paddle boats are always popular in the summer, and there's a water taxi for those of us who prefer to let an engine do the paddling. Baltimore's World Trade Center soars above the harbor, with …

2007-08-09 15:02  Get To the Point Fell's Point in Baltimore
After several days of high heat and creeping humidity, the weather broke and brought warm, cheerful skies. It was absolutely perfect for wandering about the cobblestone streets of Fell's Point. This historic waterfront community, east of Baltimore's Inner Harbor, is sprinkled with shops, restaurants, and lively pubs.               Fell's Point is a National Register Historic District dating back to the Colonial era. Englishman William Fell bought the land in 1726 and saw the potential for shipbu …
