2007-11-06 12:50  Blue Plate Special
It was another one of those Uni Watch red-alert moments last night, as about a dozen readers e-mailed me all at once and another half-dozen or so posted all at once in the comments section. The cause Jason Strudwick of the Rangers got in a fight and his nameplate came loose during the fisticuffs, revealing some nasty-looking adhesive residue on the underside. All of which is very entertaining. But here's my question: Since when have the Rangers been using nameplates I always thought they used di …

2007-09-07 14:17  NCAA Division I-A College Football Predictions 2007 Week 2
Note: For odds and rankings we use the College Football Prediction Tracker, Yahoo Live Odds and Sagarin Rankings at USA Today. There are some great games this second week of college football Thursday: Louisville was favored by 40.5 over Middle Tennessee State. We had it 51-24 for Louisville, who won 58-42. In spite of a great offense, that poor defense will hurt the Cardinals this year if they do not get it straightened out pretty soon. Oregon State was favored by 3 over Cincinnati, our selectio …

2007-09-02 12:16  Players Talk About Opener
Terry Grant was ready for his opportunity, and made the most of it. Grant made his first start in crimson and rushed for 134 yards on 18 carries, scoring three times in Bama's 52-6 rout of Western Carolina to open the Nick Saban era. œThey call the plays, and I just run the ball. That s how I feel about it, Grant said. œI felt good.

2007-09-02 03:49  Notes From Opener Vs. Western Carolina
Alabama s offense racked up a school record 35 first downs in Saturday night s 52-6 win over Western Carolina. The previous record was 34 set in a 34-28 loss to Penn State in 1983. Other notes from the first game in the Nick Saban Era as Bama s head football coach:

It was another Nick Saban lovefest, only this one counted. Terry Grant rushed for 134 yards and three touchdowns in his first start and Alabama opened the Saban era with a fan-pleasing 52-6 victory over Western Carolina Saturday night.

2007-09-01 22:24  Pre-Game Notes
If the latest true freshman Alabama football starter works out as well as the last one, that will prove to be more than good enough for the Crimson Tide. As the Nick Saban Era got underway Saturday night with Bama hosting Western Carolina, Rolando McClain was listed as the starting middle linebacker. He was to be the eighth true freshman to start in a season opening game for Alabama since 1973.

2007-08-29 11:09  What's With All the Belly-Aching About Discipline
Both of the teams I follow have made some headlines recently revolving around football players getting into trouble. Bama has had four players arrested in the offseason, all for what I would consider minor charges, including Simeone Castille who was arrested for disorderly conduct. Another player was arrested and allegedly mouthed off to the police, insulting Nick Saban in the process. LSU has also had 4 players arrested in the offseason, but for more serious violations, including the most recen …

Sammie Stroughter Watch, Day 20: The mercurial Oregon State receiver will not play against Utah Thursday, which is about all we know at this point about his possible playing time. The smart move, it would seem, would be to keep Stroughter in practice and redshirt him while he overcomes his personal anguish, or whatever issues he was having that kept him out of practice for two weeks, and get him back fully healthy and mentally prepared for a full season in 2008. OSU beat reporters would be etern …

2007-08-25 03:16  Blogger Q&A's: Alabama Edition
Moving on with the Q&A's segment, next up is Alabama-centric with Memphis Tider blogger, Gary. 1. What do you make of this whole Simeon Castille situation I think the Castille arrest is just a small distraction. The kid was acting like an idiot with his friends on a Saturday night after a night at the club. The arrest was for a misdemeanor charge, and I really doubt that he's going to lose any playing time. The Castille thing doesn't bother me as much as the incident with the other three players …

Days 'til Season Kickoff : 12 Don't forget to get your tickets for the first game, or for any of Alabama's games this year, over at TickCo.com. Check out their Alabama section, and their Bryant Denny venue schedule as well. So I guess we have to start off Monday with some incredibly bad news: Simeon Castille likes to be loud and obnoxious...apparently at 2am with friends walking down the strip in Tuscaloosa. Sim was arrested for disorderly conduct on Sunday morning around 2am. It sounds like a b …

2007-08-09 12:03  A Bulldog Tempts the Wrath of a Vengeful God, Part IV: Alabama.
Before I proceed with the big Georgia-Bama battle royale, I wanted to thank those of you who've written in with complimentary words about this series -- this was kind of a leap of faith for me, not only in the sense that I'm an extremely superstitious and/or karma-sensitive person who's still not 100-percent sure that I won't be dooming Georgia to a 6-6 season by writing this, but also in the sense that this is the first time I've ever really tried my hand at some in-depth Xs-and-Os analysis as …

2007-07-27 17:57  Q&A with Roll Bama Roll
I will be cross-posting this entry with my other blog, College Football Authority. I had a recent Q&A with Rico (Qs 1-6) and Todd (Q 7) from Roll Bama Roll, a great Alabama blog from guys who I would never ever consider Bammers. So, that being said, here are their opinions on the questions I asked them: 1. The preseason prognostication for Alabama is all over the board, with Phil Steele being the most optimistic: 2nd in the SEC West. I agree with him in saying the LSU-Alabama winner will win the …

2007-07-24 22:21  ACC Possibilities for the 2008 Schedule
It was announced a few days ago that UTEP and Alabama mutually agreed to cancel their 2008 meeting. Sadly, they were probably our most compelling out of conference (OOC) opponent for 2008. I'm not just saying that because of the Mike Price circus sideshow it would bring to town, but because they are legitimately the best/most interesting opponent of the four (discounting the revenge factor with Northern Illinois.) The three remaining OOC opponents are: Western Kentucky, Northern Illinois and Tul …

Saban Still Omnipotent Why does Coach Nick Saban let bad things happen to good people Why didn't Coach stop this!! Hey...Maybe it's all part of CNS's greater plan. Here's the official internet rumor from Tidesports.com (In Tider Speak, the "Caps Lock" means it's seriously true): FIRST OF ALL, I AM AS FANATIC ABOUT BAMA FOOTBALL AS ANYONE. I WAS THERE, DEADRICK AND UPCHURCH WERE ARRESTED BY TPD AND THREE OTHERS WERE TAKEN AWAY BY UAPD. THE BOUNCERS AT LEGACY TURNED THEM AWAY BECAUSE THEY WERE TRY …

2007-07-03 21:20  Alabama finishes 9-3; both Auburn and Tennessee fall
I try hard to pick with my head and not my heart when I have occasion to pick an Alabama football game. I've never tried to pick the whole season ahead of time before, but Finebaum laid down 7-5 as his prediction in April, and I just don't see that. This was too solid a football team last year, unambiguously done in by poor coaching in at least 4 of its 7 losses. I have the Tide at 9-3, as follows: September 1 (Western Carolina). This is as good as a first game for a new coach gets, presenting a …

2006-02-19 06:43  Sunday, February 19, 2006
Recently, both Doug Gillett and I commented on the 2006 football schedules of the Southeastern Conference's member institutions .    However, Paul Westerdawg subsequently called our attention to Paul Finebaum's criticisms of the league members' non-conference slates .    While frothing at the mouth and with spittle flying from his lips as he ranted and raved with a maniacal gleam in his eye, Finebaum offered the following inartful hyperbole:    "The SEC officially released the 2006 football sche …
