2007-10-04 18:19 Calcutta and I
As mentioned in a previous post, I was in Calcutta for a very brief period of time. The first thing I noticed about the city was that the roads were not too good, at least when compared to those in the other state-capitals that I have been to in India, including New Delhi, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Bhopal, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Madras and Goa. Another vital difference that I noticed, as against Delhi's roads, was that there were no stray cattle on the roads of Calcutta, even as there were plenty of …

2007-08-22 05:29 NAMES: Bangalore becomes Bengaluru
Salutations from Bengaluru, the newly approved name of Bangalore. The Indian government okayed a measure this week to change the city's name, one of a dozen name changes in the state of Karnataka. According to this article in Newindpress, "the proposal first came up in December 2005, when a meeting of litterateurs on celebrations of state Golden Jubilee Suvarna Karnataka suggested that Bangalore be renamed Bengaluru to mark the occasion." Will American jobs now be Bengaluru'd Other cities that h …

2007-08-22 03:39 Bangalore Open Coffee Kick Starts with Bang
What do you call a meet where about 60+ people interested in entrepreneurship drop by to share ideas That's Bangalore Open Coffee Club for you all. I am speechless at the number of people and the quality (many of them are people who run their own start ups, a few VC's). When me and Vaibhav started the marketing of this event, we expected about 15-20 to be a good number to call this event a success. Now the numbers speak for themselves of the success of the inaugural meet. Read on for more detail …

2007-08-16 08:47 Did you know
I am indebted to the Pan Macmillan internal blog, The Digitalist, for this link to a site about the future of education. I'd recommend that you switch off the sound unless you're into meaningless electronic musical drivel but the graphics are terrific and the messages clear. I'm off to a meeting right now but will later today add a spot of nostalgia. And the nostalgia comes courtesy of Alysoun Sanders who runs the Macmillan Archive in Basingstoke. If you take the trouble to checck out the links …

2007-08-15 07:48 India Today
Yesterday Pakistan celebrated sixty years of statehood. Today India revels in sixty years of independence. Much will be written about the sub-continent and most of it will be much better informed than my thoughts. I've been visiting India for twenty-five years, always (apart from the occasional day or two by the beach) on publishing business. My first visit was to the Delhi offices of Oxford University Press India in Ansari Road where they (and just down the road the editorial offices of the …

2007-08-12 18:50 Fade in and fade out
Thatz how weekend was ! It crept up on me Saturday afternoon and took to a premature closure at 4PM Sunday. Sat morning and Sunday evening were spent in a train getting myself away from and back to Bangalore. Was visiting Chennai this weekend.. The weather there was both rain and shine. 'Shine' by Chennai standards. Rain messed my Metro Plus theatre fest plans. Ok, I'm not complaining. Not a bad trip overall.. Picked up a few books: A book by Ray on films, India after Gandhi by Ramachandra Guha …

This is a directory of Mizo bloggers. The term Mizo here applies to all those who consider themselves as Mizos or sons and daughters of Mizoram, and this directory does not allow any arguments such as what exactly is a Mizo, is it only those who speak duhlian dialect, or those originating from Mizoram only, or about Zo reunification or Zofate symbolism etc etc. There are various forums and websites for such discussions and debates. Over here, the rule is simple. Do you consider yourself to be a …

Hello Everyone, Its almost been about three weeks since the dust has started to settle, but in my mind, the memories of the days event still seem to remain fresh - along with it the fatique that had built up for the last four months of preparations and the continuous effort that is still going on in gathering feedback, discussing and debating over them and plotting our next set of actions and aiming at the horizon that we want to go for. Let me talk about a few of those here: I received news a c …

2007-08-09 16:56 Mobile local deals search, by mKhoj
mKhoj, a mobile advertising platform for merchants and mobile local deals search platform for customers, launched in Mumbai today. They did a formal press release & a couple of blog post seedings today, here's a candid review of the product. The concept is similar to that of OffersForShoppers, available in Bangalore & Delhi/NCR since past few months. But if you are a Mumbaikar who has been lamenting the lack of such a facility for your own city/locality, lament no more!! mKhoj is for you, even o …

2007-08-06 06:52 Architecture and Cultural Touchstones
I have, on this blog, lamented several times (including very recently ) about the complete absence of architectural sensibilities in modern-day India. It almost seems like the pre-independence art deco movement was the last time anyone used their brain and imagination to build. This is very strange because India has such a rich architectural tradition, so to see these monstrosities all over is embarrassing. The trend in Hyderabad and Bangalore, for example, seems to be to build ugly-as-fuck spra …

In Bangalore, India, police have arrested a man after officers raided his home, printing press, and storage space. What did the officer's discover that warranted the arrest Four Million Rupees ($99,000) worth of fake Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows covers. There were a total of about 4,000 covers collected from various authors. "The covers look like originals," said Deputy Commissioner of Bangalore police Alok Kumar. "They were being transported to Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkota." For the full …

On my departure to manila, my check-in luggage blinked a 31.7 kg in the weighing scale. Knowing that the allowable weight is 30 kg I thought I could make my way by seducing the guy at the counter of Bangalore International Airport with my sweet smile. But all hell breaks loose when he told me in utter shamelessness that I need not to pay now at the counter but instead he will meet me upstairs to settle the unnecessary charges. I was aghast with disbelief that right in front of my face corruption …
