2007-11-01 10:09  BBC -- global news medium number 1
A month ago, eJour editor Helle Nissen Kruuse asked members of her LinkedIn network to "choose just ONE general, all round online news service". The results are in, and the BBC won easily -- with 48 of the 98 votes the good old Beeb was way ahead of the competitors. Helle quotes lots of the participants in English in the otherwise Danish language story. (The BBC was this blogger's choice as well, though the idea of choosing ONE medium appears almost archaic already.)

2007-10-19 13:19  How the BBC is going to kill Netscape
The UK s public service broadcasting behemoth, the BBC, has been going through some tough times the last few weeks. However a major announcement has been lost through all the talk of job loss, changes in programming and shifts in budget. Soon all the international visitors to the hugely popular BBC website will be served adverts. With such a huge audience it promises to sound the death knell for struggling portals like Netscape. Ciaran Norris over at Altogether Digital highlighted the potential …

2007-10-18 18:48  yet another article of impeachment
I think I'm just gonna yammer on this post.... [click picture] 11:50am -- Forever I'd been hollering about this stuff being illegal or something and everyone just pfeh-ed and huh-ed me down. I've only been online a little over two years, and my bellowing about the illegality had long since turned into bellowing about fascism.... Now they come up with my original point. So it really is not merely bad faith. Are you going to keep pfeh-ing and huh-ing even still Someday I will have shed enough cond …

2007-10-18 02:12  THURSDAY, Oct. 18, 2007 - Lucy Gardner Anderson
Relative difficulty: Easy THEME: SIDE SPLITTING (38A: Hilarious ... or a hint to this puzzle's theme) - four different two-word "side" orders are "split," with the first word appearing in one part of the grid and the second appearing in another. I did this puzzle in just over 6 minutes, which is insanely fast for me on a Thursday. Had a slow start, but once I got some traction, the whole thing went down fast. I think I was slow to get going because I over-thought the theme. Thought there might b …

2007-10-16 02:10  A Wodehouse a Week #25: Joy in the Morning
'Good morning, good morning,' I said. 'I want a book.' Of course, I ought to have known that it's silly to try and buy a book when you go to a book shop. It merely startles and bewilders the inmates. The motheaten old bird who had stepped forward to attend to me ran to form. 'A book, sir' he said, with ill-concealed astonishment. 'Spinoza,' I replied, specifying. This had him rocking back on his heels. 'Did you say Spinoza, sir' 'Spinoza was what I said.' He seemed to be feeling that if we talke …

2007-10-15 11:15  New Episode Of Top Gear Airs, Features Audi R8 Versus Porsche 911 Carrera 2S
Got a case of the Mondays Well, not anymore you don't, because we've got the highlight of the second episode of season ten of the world's greatest driving show, Top Gear. The show aired live on the Beeb last night and in addition to Jeremy, Richard and James running their second attempt at building amphibious cars (more on that later), two of the boys ran a couple of German speed demons around the Top Gear track -- Clarkson, teasing us with the Audi R8, and Hammond dropping the hammer on a Porsc …

2007-10-14 09:10  Old Time Radio
I was having a discussion with my boss the other day and he was telling me about Old Time Radio or radio shows that have entered the public domain, mainly due to American Radio Networks not registering copyright in the 1950s/60s. When I got back from the pub I decided to have a look and see if I could actually find any for download online - I found a couple of really good sites with a massive collection of OTR shows - and some brilliant SciFi. These shows are from the heyday of American Radio - …

Sometimes you read things and have to make a double take and then read the whole thing again - then you still have no idea what its all about and need to go and find somewhere else on the web saying the same thing. Thats just happened to me - apparently Spaced, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz star Simon Pegg, is to play Scotty in the new Star Trek film set to start filming next month and be released on Christmas Day 2008 - huh I know I've been out of it for a while - a little pre-occupied with th …

2007-10-12 10:40  Top Gear is back
Sorry posting has been a bit thin on the ground recently - three reasons for this 1) Mad busy at work with the Jersey Marathon (thousands of photos and HOURS of video to sort through) 2) Top Gear is back and I've been hitting the Final Gear Forums pretty hard and 3) I've been trying to write my own theme for Up Your Ego from scratch after not finding a theme that did exactly what I want. 2007-10-05 11:55  Kerplunk to go to Five
One of the closest things Britain has to the American news megastar - the god awful Natasha Kerplunk - is to leave the BBC for Five after five years terrorising the BBC. Finally we can put an end to stories like "There was a lightblub blown in the TV Centre Newsroom for six months - it couldn't be fixed until Natasha Kaplinsky was available to cut the ribbon that opened the ladder." The sharp faced news personality, who seemed to manage to get her mug everywhere, all the time - is to head to Fiv …

2007-10-04 11:51  God bless October
I love October - the weather starts to cool down and feel more comfortable, my life becomes less hectic due to the summer season coming to an end and the new Autumn television season kicks off. And this year that means Top Gear is back on BBC Two with a new ten part series packed with challenges, reviews and opinions - lots and lots of opinions. It also means that Spooks is back on BBC One with a series that carries a single theme from start to finish. The Electric Proms are back across BBC Radi …

2007-10-03 14:14  Childrens Television
According to BBC News just 17% of Childrens Television broadcast in the UK is actually produced in the UK - which is nice. Ok so I know the PC thing to say right now is that children shouldn't be watching too much television anyway and so if only 17% of hundreds of hours of programming a week is produced in the UK then that should be enough. But thats just bollocks. I have two young children, a six year old and a four year old - both of whom have the same healthy interest in television and being …

2007-09-28 16:45  Beeb go pod happy
I've just been reading on the BBC Radio 4 site that the News Quiz with Sandi Toksvig, Alan Coren, Jeremy Hardy and Andy Hamilton is going to be published as a podcast - this can only be a good thing. I love what the BBC is doing for podcasting and the fact that they've accepted and embraced it as the 'completely' new medium it actually is and not just seen it as an extension of the web. In fact the BBC Podcast page is a great example of a podcast directory and the BBC Podcast section of iTunes i …

2007-09-25 21:38  Silent Witness: a mini-rant
You know, I love this show, but sometimes it drives me up the effing wall. I like silly, somewhat implausible plots and I don't care that it probably resembles real pathology departments about as well as Spooks (which I also like) resembles real life in MI5. But why oh why is always Nikki - the pretty blonde pathologist - who gets emotionally involved in a case, interferes and is attacked/captured/injured/messes her hair up in a rather attractive way Why is always her who suffers for her interfe …

2007-09-24 19:44  Saving Merv's reputation
The fight is on to restore Mervyn King's reputation: Former banker Sean Park would put bankers and especially Northern Rock chief executive Adam Applegarth in the dock, not Mervyn King. Bankers turned safe debt into toxic losses using excessive leverage, and Northern Rock ran itself like a hedge fund. The former chairman of the US Federal Reserve says the Fed's not independent, the current governor of the Bank of England says he is. Sounds like Al's a pragmatist, and Merv's an idealist to me. In …

2007-09-16 02:30  Protests with the Mostest
KMT supporters arrive for the big rally. Massive rallies in Taiwan yesterday! I stopped by the KMT UN rally today for about an hour and a half during its opening moments, where I met the redoubtable Craig Ferguson of CFImages (Craig's beautiful images are up now on his blog ), and watched my first rally from the Other Side. Waiting in the shade on a bitterly hot afternoon. Step into the world of the Taiwanese KMT. Everyone at the rally was speaking Taiwanese, including the speakers on the stage, …

2007-09-06 14:40  Bloggers reclaim the airways
The Monkey Tennis Centre: BBC scraps climate change bias-athon ˜Many blogs run by climate skeptics groups regularly accuse the BBC of bias, and I think this is the really interesting point in all of this. Bloggers, have, of course been at the forefront of the resistance to claims that the debate is over, and have enabled research by skeptical scientists, which previously would have been confined to science magazines and easily suppressed by a hostile media, to be seen by millions. The Guardian is reporting today that plans for an all-day save-the-planet-athon on the BBC have been dropped. Speculation is that some Beeb suits felt that it would breach their impartiality guidelines. Forget impartiality - the idea should have been strangled at birth on the grounds of good taste.
