2007-10-22 22:45  COHA Report. The Organization of American States: On its Deathbed
To Our Readers Unfortunately, an older and unedited version of the COHA piece entitled œThe OAS: On its Deathbed was inadvertently sent out to a very small cohort of COHA readers on October 17 before an error was discovered and the press run was immediately aborted. Due to a computer editing error, the author, Sean Bartlett did not catch that two different facts were spliced into one sentence. Jose Miguel Insulza, as a young man in his late twenties, was a political director in the Chilean For …

2007-10-19 17:12  Can't reach Germany Yeah, right.
Long live the mighty aviation of the socialism country! V. Dobrovolsky, 1939 No enemy bomber can reach the Ruhr. If one reaches the Ruhr, my name is not Goering. You may call me Meyer. Hermann Goering addressing the Luftwaffe (September 1939) as quoted in August 1939: The Last Days of Peace (1979) by Nicholas Fleming, p. 171; "Meyer" (or "Meier") is a common name in Germany. This statement would come back to haunt him as Allied bombers devastated Germany ; many ordinary Germans, especially in Be …

2007-10-16 20:20  Schools as Scapegoats
Larry Mishel and Richard Rothstein have written a long piece for The American Prospect titled "Schools as Scapegoats," which is a good summary of the labor-centered critique of education reform. They make some good points, but I think their larger takes on the political and the policy implications are deeply misguided. First, the good points. A Nation at Risk was released 24 years ago on a wave of scare-mongering about public education--if we don't reform the schools, people said, the economic c …

2007-10-12 12:36  Free speech for the intolerant: The anti-Israel rally in London
Some delicious irony at The Guardian, with the usual amount of leftist cluelessness: By Peter Tatchell In London, this year's al-Quds demonstration - held last Sunday - had the themes of: "End Child Killing! End Oppression! End Israeli Apartheid!" It was supported by the left-wing Respect Party, 1990 Trust, the Muslim Association of Britain, the Islamic Human Rights Commission, Hizb ut-Tahrir and the Federation of Student Islamic Societies. The post-march Trafalgar Square rally was addressed by …

2007-10-10 18:18  First they took Manhattan
By Linsey Hanley (THE GUARDIAN, 10/10/07): In Berlin, the capital of the largest, richest country in the EU, you can rent a flat for 500 euros (Ł346) a month and get around - on its ultra-reliable public transport system, made up of cherishable shiny yellow trains, buses and trams - for buttons. It's the size of London but contains half the population; it's surrounded by lakes and dense forest; and, generally speaking, it's not full of prats. Heaven, in other words. Even better, it doesn't exist …

By Ignacio Ramonet, editor of Le Monde diplomatique and co-author with Fidel Castro of the forthcoming Fidel Castro: My Life; he speaks tonight at London Metropolitan University (THE GUARDIAN, 10/10/07): For the first time in almost 50 years, Fidel Castro is not in control of Cuba. And contrary to predictions, the system has not broken down, the population has not revolted, the revolution has not reversed. Now the analysts are asking: will it last Is Raúl Castro going to reroute the revolution H …

Col. Henry J. Foresman, Jr., "Culture Battle: Selective use of history should not be used to justify the status quo" [ Armed Forces Journal ] ( via Tom Barnett's Weblog )Key quotes and concepts for the busy reader No surprises, culture defines the military. Currently, the army is defined by a "grand war" culture: "For the Army, it is World War II that has shaped its thinking, culture and ethos. Fighting the grand war has become the Army s be-all-and-end-all mantra. However, this "grand war" cult …

2007-10-01 15:45  Stay in the Stasi Suite
Attention Berlin-bound students and backpackers: For a mere 38 euros ($50), the impecunious traveler can decamp to the Ostel, a new budget hotel in the city s hip Mitte district. The rooms are spartan: a rotary telephone, bunk beds, a rust-brown couch and walls adorned with photos of former East German Communist Party leader Erich Honecker. At the Ostel, it s the GDR redivivus, with each room carefully recreated to evoke memories of arbitrary arrest and travel restrictions, using period furnitur …

So we fly from Venice into frankfurt then bus it to the train station but the bus ride was about two hours longer than we were expecting so we missed the last train to munich. This is where plans were changed due to our time frame we had to stay the night in frankfurt and just go straight to berlin the next day. Here we are: Welcome to Germany! Now we're in Alexanderplatz. A lutherian church by the lustgarten. The Lustgarten is a big grassy park area for the royal palace and during his time hitl …

The Devil has had a crack at Sunny Hundal for not understanding that liberalism is at heart about liberty not empathy. That we can never truly know anothers mind is one of the arguments that J S Mill uses for defending Liberalism in ' On Liberty ': with respect to his own feelings and circumstances, the most ordinary man or woman has means of knowledge immeasurably surpassing those that can be possessed by any one else. The interference of society to overrule his judgment and purposes in what on …

Philips is firing on all cylinders these days when it comes to TV innovation. Forget the cool AmbiLight technology though, since at this week s IFA event in Berlin, Philips broke out what it claimed is the first giant 3-D display that requires people not to look like dorks. That alone should get a prize. The 3D WOWzone is a massive 132in multi-screen 3D wall comprised of nine 42in Philips 3-D displays which combine into one big screen where stuff actually looks like it's coming right out at you. …

If you think the astounding rise of income inequities and the rise of the GOP are just coincidental, please email me. I would like to speak with you about the many advantages and pleasures you might derive as the new, proud owner of the Brooklyn Bridge. The GOP sold Ronald Reagan's tax cut of 1982 like George W. Bush sold his war on Iraq. The benefits of both have accrued only to this nation's power elite and, in both cases, everyone else is stuck with the tab. It will be left to sons, daughters …

Some of you here might be to young to remember the cold war between the US and Russia that started after the end of the second World War and lasted until 1989, illustrated best when the Berlin Wall came crumbling down. But what many people don t know is that Iceland played a large part in ending the Cold War in the 80 s. At least that s what many Ice …

First, a little German lesson. I'm in Berlin to talk to press and partners about Windows Home Server at " IFA " a huge consumer electronics show. Apparently IFA is bigger than even CES. What a gorgeous city! The weather certainly has something to do with it, but so far I found Berlin to be one of the most attractive European cities I've visited. It has a great modern feel while still feeling very "historical".  I got to see the "wall" last night and ate dinner on the roof of the Reichstag (the s …
