2007-10-01 12:30 Revisiting the Danish Cartoon Crisis
Over a year after the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten published those now-infamous cartoons of Mohammad one of which portrayed the Muslim Prophet carrying a lit bomb in his turban the country is still noticeably on edge. When I recently visited Copenhagen, a week after a pre-dawn raid netted a handful of suspected Islamic extremists, the twin issues of Islam and integration were difficult to avoid. On television, the news and chat shows were dominated by discussions of coexistence with the coun …

2007-08-29 12:54 Fredens religion, nu med 'tilgivelse og forsoning'
Fire unge indiske muslimer døde tidligt onsdag morgen, under den religiøse fest Shab-e Barat - også kaldet the night of forgiveness and atonement (tilgivelse & forsoning). BBC gør sit bedste for at skjule det, men den slags skal selvfølgelig hævnes, og når nu der er et kendt hindu-tempel i nærheden såhh... Fra Reuters India. "Police briefly closed the Taj Mahal and placed parts of Agra city under curfew on Wednesday after Indian Muslims burned trucks and battled police to protest against the dea …

2007-08-27 08:16 Denmark: Hizb ut-Tahrir's annual conference
Hizb ut-Tahrir in Denmark gathered Sunday for the movement's six-hour annual conference. The conference caused calls from politicians to ban the movement, mainly from the Danish Social Liberal Party (Radikale) and the Danish People's Party. Fadi Addullatif, the movement's spokesperson, said in response that Denmark is becoming a dictatorship, just like those Denmark criticizes in the Middle East. He said such developments blur the difference between the dictatorships and the European governmen …

2007-08-19 17:45 Stories of Life: Speaking Dutch
Last week the city of Copenhagen announced it will have all 5-year-olds do a language exam, to check their language skills. This brought the Danish People's Party to suggest that immigrant parents, for example those speaking Arabic, Urdu or Turkish, be encouraged by both the municipality and teachers to speak Danish at home. Their suggestion was rejected by other politicians. It is of course not only immigrant children who may have problems. A recent news report reported that even ethnic Danish …

2007-08-04 11:28 Enlightenment
Mark Thoma finally shows me why I've always been infuriated by Berlingske Tidende's "Homes" section. You know, the section where you always read about perfect people presenting their cosy 15-room villas after a minor elegant refurbishment of their kitchens (price ¬100.000). Berlingske's "Career" section with interviews with successful executives telling about their perfect lives, goal-driven careers, successful wives, three children and the holiday home in Southern France is just as infuriating …

The road to Hell is paved by good intentions, or so they say. We have just lived through one of the wettest Julies in the history of weather records, and last week Berlingske Tidende had a headline on their website called "This is how bad the weather will be during the weekend" ( Så dårligt bliver vejret i weekenden ). Well, what else could they do It was indoor weather. And since I staid indoors a lot there were many people who were able to get in touch with me, so my booklet has not come as fa …

2007-07-27 13:59 Rasmussen Not Done
AP Photo/Antonio Calanni Michael Rasmussen is still reeling from his firing from Team Rabobank. The 33 year old racer is back home giving interviews about his sudden sacking while leading the Tour. Whether he was doping or not, the missed tests and obfuscation of his whereabouts created enough concern from Rabobank management to sack the racer while leading the Tour. Rasmussen like any fired employee is in denial. "I know very well that I was late with information about my whereabouts," Rasmusse …

2007-07-27 09:13 Denmark: Asylum seeker with two wives
The Danish government had recently transported 200 Iraqis - interpreters working for the Danish forces and their families - to Denmark. But now the authorities have a new challenge: one of the interpreters has brought his two wives with him. The 41 year old interpreter, SH, has been staying together with his family at the Mariesminde asylum center in Ebeltoft since Monday. His two wives, 32 and 34 years old, and their three children, pose a "new situation". In any case, the section head in the a …

2007-07-25 08:30 Denmark: Middle-Eastern accent "more annoying"
Many Danes are irritated when hearing their language spoken with an accent, but a new study shows that there are big differences in how people are regarded based on their accent, regardless of how well they speak the language. Copenhaven University has asked 232 Danes to evaluate 16 people's personality based on how they spoke. They were also asked to guess where the accent comes from. The 16 people came from 8 countries, a man and woman from each country. The study shows that Danes were most ir …

2007-07-23 09:30 Abdol Hamid: Support for Iraqi insurgents
Danish soldiers are attacked every day in Iraq by rockets and mortar grenades but according to Asmaa Abdol-Hamid, the Red-Green Alliance's candidate for the Danish parliament, that is ok. In the latest issue of the Socialistisk Arbejderavis (paper of the Danish International Socialists) she calls to support the Iraqi's fight against Danish and foreign forces. Berlingske Tidende (BT) interviewed Abdol-Hamid by telephone. "In what type of fight do you support the Iraqis" "I support the Iraqi nat …

Here s the latest news about the Danica White, the Danish freighter that was captured by pirates off the coast of Somalia at the beginning of June. First, from yesterday s edition of the Danish newspaper Berlingske Tidende (my translation): Hostages Enter Eighth Week The hostage drama for the Danica White is going into its eighth week, and is still completely blacked out. 2007-07-19 13:48 Denmark: More Muslim divorces
The number of divorces among Muslims is rising. Women especially are leaving arranged or badly functioning marriages. But Islamic culture creates problems for the women, who are coming to crisis centers and imams for help. Researchers, integration consultants and imams say they see more and more women who are giving up the norms and traditional gender roles in the Muslim community. Rubya Mehdi of Copenhagen University says that there are more and more Muslim women that want divorces, even though …

2007-07-14 00:20 Danish politician acquitted of defamation against Muslims
Today the leader of the Danish People s Party, Pia Kjaersgaard, was acquitted of defamation in a case initiated by the Islamic Society of Denmark, a salafist organization with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. The Islamic Society took the matter to court after Kjaersgaard in January 2006 in a newsletter called a group of Danish imams traitors . Her comments followed the news of the imams travelling to the Middle East to provoke a boycott of Danish products and turn public opinion against Denmark …

2007-07-13 00:30 OECD at it Again.
The OECD (Organisation for the Economic Collapse of Denmark) has fired a new broadside at Denmark, complaining that we aren't doing enough to integrate our cherished immigrant population. The european immigrants seem to be doing OK, but that is by the by for the OECD. This from the Copenhagen Post: Denmark fourth worst at integration The OECD has rated Denmark as one of the least successful Western countries at integrating its immigrants into the job market. Denmark is lagging far behind other W …

From the Copenhagen Post: Biofuels burning Carlsberg Published 06.07.07 16:00 The use of grain for biofuel production is pushing beer production prices up for Carlsberg Brewery Farmers selling large amounts of their grain to biofuel producers is leading to increasing production prices for brewing giant Carlsberg, reported Berlingske Tidende Friday. Subsidy programmes from the government and European Union to promote environmentally friendly fuels are making it more profitable for farmers to sell …

2007-06-20 10:25 The King of the Sofas
A twist in the Stockholm-Copenhagen slugfest: According to Berlingske Tidende, Denmark's most common sofa is IKEA's "Klippan". The paper is looking for owners who want to share their stories about the iconic but charisma-free piece of furniture. Curiously, IKEA for some time had its operating headquarters in Denmark, but these days it is technically a Dutch company. The tax thing, you know.

2007-06-17 13:10 Danish media's move to web-first publishing
A year ago, Danish newspaper Politiken moved their newsdesk online. Now Berlingske Tidende is taking it one step further. ALL journalists are to work for the web edition as well as for print. Stories will be published online first. Behind the move is Berlingske's new editor-in-chief, Lisbeth Knudsen. According to New Media Trends, she says the new strategy has "earthquake" like dimensions. As Jon Lund at New Media Trends points out, there are a number of challenges to face for Berlingske. Having …

Lisbeth Knudsen, editor-in-chief at Berlingske Tidende, one of the three big old traditional Danish newspapers, today announced a new strategy The new Berlingske Tidende (in this premium content article in Danish from Borsen.dk). The strategy follows her taking office some two month ago, and has, according to herself, earthquake like dimensions. 2007-05-31 23:00 About this blogger...
I was born in the suburbs of Copenhagen in 1958, and until the age of 18 all my plans for life focused on professional soccer. That changed when I arrived at university and began studying Russian language and literature. I was carried away and didn't touch a soccer ball for several years. In 1980 and 1981 I spent a year in the Soviet Union. It was the defining experience of my adult life. I met the woman to whom I am still married, and was deeply fascinated by Russia and its people. I read the g …

2007-05-29 08:28 Vesselbo - The Fun Doesn't Stop Here
We shall see how it all ends, but today Liberal MP Eyvind Vesselbo denies that he has any plans to defect to Ny Alliance. In Berlingske Tidende, this becomes: Vesselbo denies defection In Politiken - the paper which originally broke the story - the headline is: Total confusion about Vesselbo Right. Yes. In this case, it would be nice to know who the sources for the story are, but they won't be coming forward for obvious reasons. I have no insider knowledge about this - I'm just amused about the …

This could be interesting: Politiken: Eyvind Vesselbo to join Ny Alliance. Tillykke til vinderen, og bedre held næste gang til taberen. Tintin always was and still is one of my favourite comic book series. As an adult it is fun to note the Bruxelles slang, Hr. Most paid Danish newspaper again (see previous post ) saw their readership decline in the three first months of 2007 compared to last year, while free door-to-door newspapers increased their readership. Commuter dailies MetroXpress and Urban both had a stable readership of around 600,000 and are the two best-read papers in Denmark. Paid paper Jyllands-Posten had 525,000 readers and is the third paper (in 2006 readership was around 600,000). Free door-to-door paper 24timer for the first time had …
