Out with the chicken pox.....In with remodeling!! The kids are better, they are still covered with scabs but not itching and contagious anymore. Just as I thought we might have some normal days, my husband starts tearing apart the bathroom. He is replacing the tile and painting, then he will paint the kitchen and then the downstairs bathroom.... Oh boy!! Well, Praise the Lord it will look so good when it is done. It is amazing what a coat of paint can do to an old farmhouse. I'll have to post so …

2007-10-15 12:56 Civil Liberties: Surveillance and Privacy : Learning to live with Big Brother
It used to be easy to tell whether you were in a free country or a dictatorship. In an old-time police state, the goons are everywhere, both in person and through a web of informers that penetrates every workplace, community and family. They glean whatever they can about your political views, if you are careless enough to express them in public, and your personal foibles. What they fail to pick up in the café or canteen, they learn by reading your letters or tapping your phone. The knowledge thu …

2007-10-14 18:03 Of True Conversion... and No Announcement
More folks than usual likely tuned into the live feed of the noon Angelus today... only to hear no consistory announcement. Before another packed Square -- today with a heavy German contingent in attendance -- the Pope offered the following catechesis: Dear brothers and sisters! The Gospel of this Sunday presents Jesus curing ten lepers, of whom only one, a Samaritan and thus a stranger, returns to thank him (cf Lk 17:11-19). To him the Lord says: "Stand up and go; your faith has healed you!" (L …

2007-10-14 05:12 Sin, Forgiveness and Consequences
More than once I have been involved in debates with fellow believers over the broad issue of God s forgiveness and what that entails. More specifically, some have argued that since Christ forgives us, we should not only forgive others, but fully relinquish them from the consequences of their actions. Now to freely forgive is the biblically correct position. But it is an altogether different matter to suggest that once forgiven, a person is free from any consequences of his or her sin. My critics …

2007-10-14 04:00 Obama and Fundamentalist Liberalism
Democratic Presidential hopeful Barack Obama issued a package of proposals last week which he described as 'the attempt to usher in the Kingdom of God in America.' Many observers were caught off-guard by the statement. Yet the concept is nothing new. Obama belongs to a tradition within Christianity that has been around since the latter part of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century which maintains that the concept of the 'Kingdom of God' as mentioned in the Bible is a mandate fo …

2007-10-11 09:54 A Martyr in Gaza: Rami Khader Ayyad
Randall Buth in a post at ETC notes the wanton killing of Rami Khader Ayyad, the director of the bookstore of the Palestine Bible Society in Gaza. Bibbiablog has far more information on the killing, from an article in Corriere della Sera, the Italian equivalent of the New York Times. Below the fold I provide details in English translation. ETC s labels for the post, let it be said, are spot on: œBible Society, Christian, Islam, martyr, Middle East. The Bible Society s Gaza bookstore was set on …

2007-10-11 06:22 "Mainstream Voice" of "Dear Abby" Supports Gay Marriage
In yet another sign that the world turns only forwards, popular syndicated advise columnist Jeanne Phillips, aka Abigail Van Buren, has come out in support of gay marriage. In an October 9 interview with the Associated Press, œDear Abby declared: œI believe if two people want to commit to each other, God bless em. That is the highest form of commitment, for heaven s sake. The Associated Press article also notes that as a result of her long-time support of gay people, her condemnation of offe …

2007-10-08 06:18 The Reformation of Morals
William Wilberforce is rightly remembered as the man who helped set the slaves free. The evangelical Christian and politician is especially honoured this year, since 200 years ago the British Parliament voted to abolish the slave trade. Wilberforce was the main impetus behind this stunning achievement. But Wilberforce (1759-1833) is also known for more than just his work as an abolitionist. He was fully involved in work to reform society and improve morality. In 1787 Wilberforce wrote these word …

2007-10-01 21:04 What about the fact that modern science seems to disprove the Old Testament stories
...Does that mean they're just myths I've heard this type of question a lot, and my perception that modern science had proven once and for all that those Bible creation stories were "just myths" was one of the things that prevented me from taking Christianity seriously when I was an atheist. Recently I got a good email from a reader on this subject. She writes (I'm paraphrasing for brevity): I am a Catholic homeschooling mom who has been reading your blog for a while. One thing I have been wonde …

2007-09-30 17:57 Cline denuncia as constantes fraudes na arqueologia
Raiders of the faux ark Biblical archeology is too important to leave to crackpots and ideologues. It's time to fight back. Noah's Ark. The Ark of the Covenant. The Garden of Eden. Sodom and Gomorrah. The Exodus. The Lost Tomb of Jesus. All have been "found" in the last 10 years, including one within the past six months. The discoverers: a former SWAT team member; an investigator of ghosts, telepathy, and parapsychology; a filmmaker who calls himself "The Naked Archeologist"; and others, none of …

2007-09-26 13:52 NGO model of cultivated self-promotion for activism
[ From Lise Dobrin, our correspondent in Virginia ] The media blitz on David Harrison and Greg Anderson's recent Expedition to a Hot Spot has given everyone (including my mother!) a chance to reflect on what endangered language work really ought to be about. We shouldn't be parachuting in and out. We should be putting our money into *real* documentation, not demo documentation. We shouldn't be putting money into documentation at all, but into community revitalization programs (see Ellen Lutz's 2 …
