2007-10-23 19:08 Joey Bishop, Last Surviving Member of the Rat Pack, Dies at 89
The last surviving member of the famed Rat Pack, Joey Bishop, has died. Bishop, the goofball comedian, known for his deadpan delivery on countless films and television shows, died this morning at his Newport Beach, CA home. Together with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Peter Lawford, Bishop was part of the legendary Rat Pack who's rollicking performances in Las Vegas during the 1960s turned the dusty desert gambling town into a full blown entertainment destination. Thank you...

2007-10-18 20:30 Communist Apostasy and Deathbed Conversion
An interesting story from India Church and Marxists clash over conversion of legislator. The details: The Catholic Church in Kerala state and the Marxist state government are at loggerheads over the conversion of a legislator before he died of cancer last year. Pinarayi Vijayan, senior leader of Communist Party of India (Marxist), speaking last week at the first death anniversary of Mathai Chacko in Kozhikode city, lashed out at Bishop Mar Paul Chittilapally for saying that the late legislator h …

2007-10-18 19:39 Fr. Dan, the Pastor
Admittedly, the torrent of "surprise" expressed in practically all the rest of the media over the elevation of the American South's first prince of the church has been, well, rather confounding. Par for the (press) corps, sure, but still .... See, even on Cardinal-designate Daniel DiNardo's first morning as head of the US' sixth-largest diocese (19 months ago), it was intimated on these pages that the red hat was already believed to be on its way to Galveston-Houston (...with the hint dropped ag …

2007-10-18 03:50 On the other end of the spectrum...
After criticizing a too harsh approach towards gay/SSA folks, here an exposition of the other end of the spectrum - Commonweal readers comment on the Abp. Niederauer-transvestite "nuns" spectacle. 2007-10-17 15:04 Whither the Anglicans
BISHOP Tom Frame bemoans the lamentable decline in Anglican Christianity, though the Sydney Diocese provides a notable exception. Yet, according to Jill Rowbotham's report (``Anglicans to change `or risk anarchy''', 17/10), we are his main target for our alleged ``abandonment of Anglican structures and customs''.

From the AP comes a follow-up on this story I reported the other week The Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego is asking parishioners to donate $25 million to help pay for its $198.1 million settlement with childhood sex abuse victims. The diocesan headquarters and a nearby seminary may have to be sold if the campaign is unsuccessful, Bishop Robert H. 2007-10-17 06:09 Fired Graham aide target of probe
WASHINGTON - SLED and federal election officials are investigating the alleged embezzlement of $215,000 from U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham's campaign funds. The investigations come after Graham fired one of his most trusted and longest-serving aides, who is named in documents filed with the Federal Elections Commission. The documents detail dozens of alleged "unauthorized payments" made to the woman. Jennifer Adams, 49, was removed from her post as a campaign bookkeeper in November, and "she was fire …

To put the icing on your Announcement Morning cake, the current holder of the "most reliable Italian vaticanista " crown, Il Giornale's Andrea Tornielli, has just reported that the revelation of the foreseen class of cardinals-designate will, indeed, take place at the General Audience later today. Among other seemingly-certain names cited by Tornielli and others, you can bet that the list will include the archbishops of Barcelona, Bombay, Brasilia, Genoa and Sao Paolo, alongside a boatload of cu …

2007-10-16 19:19 A "Reflection" by Elsie Hainz McGrath - "Receive the Gospel"
Insights into dissent and rebellion. Receive the Gospel whose herald you now are. Believe what you read. Preach what you believe. Practice what you preach. I remember how moved I was when Archbishop Justin Rigali said those words as he put the Gospel book into the hands of my husband eleven years ago. Perhaps it was because Scripture was my favored area of study. Perhaps it was merely because I had never really heard these words proclaimed before. At any rate, they were immensely powerful and, c …

2007-10-16 17:36 Surreal hypocrisy
If there is one thing that seems to bind together many of the paid PCE workers and consultants it's this: Hostility. Each of the PCE ads and presentations I've seen has a strong undercurrent that is downright hostile. Hostile to teachers, to school administrators, to parents, to anyone who disagrees with their numbers or their opinions. Read this diatribe about our public schools below, which is pasted from a pro-voucher blogger: "It is only from a special point of view that education is a failu …

2007-10-16 16:14 Behind the Crozier
Having given my fair share of ( gratis ) advice on media strategy to friends over the years, a key pillar of the pep-talk holds that one thing that really helps the church -- or its leadership -- get our message out is a consistent state of relations with the press that isn't just a good, but an open one. (This is the legacy of growing up amid guerrilla warfare... and, at points, being sought out to broker peace... by your father's bosses... at age 12. But that's a story all its own.) More than …
