2007-10-09 22:16  PS3 + Linux + 360 HD-DVD Drive = Golden Ticket!!
Author's Edit: After reading several peoples comments, I think I need to make a couple things clear. The PS3 is a 100 + GFLOPS   Linux computer. You simply can't get that type of power for the $500.00 price point. Using the PS3's cell processor for video encoding is an excellent use of the cell chip. I personally don't think it is an inelegant solution. And it interfaces well with my needs i.e. home theater, NAS media repository, personal work flow... Several people have commented that purchasin …

2007-09-02 23:27  New DVD sized disc promises 1 - 5 terabtye storage
A technology company in Jerusalem is promising a massive data storage on disc no bigger than a standard DVD. Mempile claims the discs, (which make both BlueRay and HD-DVD look inadequate in comparison) will store 1 terabyte of uncompressed data and up to 5 terabytes once blue lasers are introduced. That's some serious storage but I can't help but wonder what the burn and seek times would be. At current DVD burning speeds, my calculations say it would take about 66 hours to burn a full disc. That …

2007-08-15 23:19  gotta collect them all
I admit I have been somewhat remiss about this, and I apologize. For those who have been living under a rock for the past few weeks, a Collector's Edition of Serenity is due to be released on the 21st of this month - just a scant few days away. Now, I know what you all are saying, because I said it too: "But I purchased the DVD of Serenity as soon as it came out... why would I go and buy another copy of it" Well, thankfully, there are some slightly more industrious people out there than me. Beho …

2007-08-13 12:00  What is Sony
As a company Sony is completely different to Nintendo and Microsoft. Sony is a manufacturer of boxes containing electronics which has a strange obsession. Once upon a time they were the "in" brand with good looking kit that worked well but now they are looking a bit middle aged and have missed out on major market areas and been convincingly outperformed by newer kids on the block such as Apple, Nokia and Samsung. Sony own a lot of technology and are a fully vertically integrated manufacturer. Th …

2007-08-09 14:59  XPS 720 H2C lock in BIOS load
Ordered 6/12, Shipped 7/31.  4hrs of ops for upgrade OS and Updates then system locked on reboot.  About 25% of the BIOS load bar progress and system locked.  Hard rebooted several times, no joy.  Let it sit over night and the system booted.  Initially the Primary GPU was significantly hotter than the Secondary GPU [had not loaded ntune at the time].  Support sent new card and now the cards are within 10c operating temp of each other.  However, after 8hrs of ops, rebooted and system locked in th …

2007-07-19 12:35  Mooltipass
Double Viking tells us why Real Men Love The Fifth Element and I couldn't agree more. There was so much to like about that film that reading this article makes me want to pull out the DVD and watch it again. Read the article...it's quite funny. ("Bruce Willis never gets knocked out, by anyone, ever. To see him get cold-cocked by f***ing Bilbo, of all people, is hysterical.") While Double Viking calls out individual characters (though inexplicably leaving out blue alien chick), I often note how e …

2007-07-14 20:30  I really am a nerd, but that s OK.
OK, I played NES when I was a kid. I actually had an Atari 2600 when I was real young. Then, I strayed from the video game world. Stuff like school work while in college was imporant. (No comments about that, Dad.) So, now I have kids and we got an Xbox 360 late last year. We had a Playstation 2 for a while, but it broke. Not a big loss though, I bought it used on ebay. Back to the Xbox. We play it a lot. Deanna plays. The Princess plays. The Padawan plays. Most of us play. The Wookie and The Ba …

2007-07-12 19:14  Renting both HD-DVD and Blueray from Netflix
Hi, I currently own a hddvd player and am considering a ps3 purchase. One of the reasons why I'm interested in getting a blueray player is to speed up the time it takes for netflix to send me HD movies. A lot of the movies on my queue are available in both blueray and hddvd, such as blood diamond and black snake moan. Will netflix only send me the format listed on my queue, or will they send me EITHER the hddvd or blueray depending on which one is in stock. If it's the latter, I believe that wou …

2007-07-10 21:46  E3 2007: The Death Was Last Year, This Is Just the Funeral
Taking a moment to reflect on more important things in life, namely video games, I turn this site's attention to the soon-to-start Electronic Entertainment Expo 2007: Media and Business Summit, popularly referred to as E3) which is about to begin later tonight in L.A. While 2007's event probably won't prove as dramatic as 2006's high-tension roller coaster ride (the phrases "599 U.S. dollars" and "Riiiiiiiiiiiidge Racer!!!!!!!" is still widely recognized among gamers), it is already proving pret …

2007-07-10 05:09  Quick suggestion for BD player
OK so I have read many threads about the audio on the BlueRay players but I am still a little confused. I am using a Sony 3200ES receiver and a Panny 58' 1080 plasma. I want the capability of Dolby True HD and DTS HD. What players will work right now without an upgrade Thanks...

2007-07-02 17:43  GeeXboX 1.1 : 'Not a substitue for Human interaction' edition
Although development never stopped, more than a year has passed without any new official GeeXboX release. This new one is a really good candidate for your HTPC multimedia distribution choice. It comes with an improved hardware support, providing dozens of new drivers (a lot of new WiFi controllers, DVB card chipsets and new remote controls). It also comes with a massively upgraded and more stable MPlayer, which features native decoding of various audio/video formats/codecs that used to be availa …

2007-06-23 12:00  Blueray vs HD DVD = Darfur
The whole discussion between blue ray and HD DVD is going to be rather superfluous when we look back at the so called "disc" wars of 2007/2008. The comparison's the the failed betamax and video 2000 versus the victorious VHS is an overused parallel. In fact, I don't believe they are as much comparable as "lazy" publi-shits claim them to be. Secondly, the whole battle is a rather useless one looking at the current trends of media consumption. So my word of advice is: it simply doesn't matter. The …

2007-06-16 06:57  Embedded Joost Will Change The Market
Reports that Joost is now talking to hardware vendors about embedding Joost into set-top boxes and televisions will change the market as we know it. While Joost is generally now regarded as the leader in the television over internet, the market for watching television on a computer remains limited. Sure it's nice for a lark or good for an occasional break, but as Microsoft has proven with its attempts to bring a computer into the livingroom with Windows Media Center, computers as a focal point f …

2007-04-10 06:02  Why Microsoft is dead
Paul Graham's article " Microsoft is Dead " on why Microsoft's relevance in the computing world has radically declined is a gut check on how far we've come in the last few years. Microsoft is no longer a threat to competition and progress not only because of increased competition from linux and apple, but primarily because the desktop is no longer the most important platform. As gmail and other web services have proven the web and the web browser are the new platform. So called "office 2.0" has …

2007-01-10 03:49  More Thoughts on the SteveNote
Macworld Expo 2007 Keynote by wahaha_wu A few more thoughts from the Apple Keynote today as I've thought through it more. First, I agree with Om Malik that Apple's name change from Apple Computer, Inc. to Apple, Inc. is indeed significant. I disagree, though that it signifies the end of the PC era. I wouldn't go that far, but I am confident that it formalizes the true beginning of the intelligent device era - beyond smart phones (as Steve noted) but intelligent devices that not only can do a lot …

2007-01-01 18:43  2007 Predictions
This year marks the 10th anniversary edition of the TNL .net predictions for the year ahead. In past years, I've been batting above 50 percent in terms of predictions, except when it comes to naming what will happen with specific companies. The trends are generally correct (or in some case, early) and I always look at this game as a tough challenge. So, without further ado, here is my list of predictions for 2007: Mobile Last year, I declared that video would be big in the Internet space and thi …

2006-10-13 05:47  Sony to Ship First 50GB Blu-ray Movies This Week
With any luck, this will work to benefit Sony as they sure could use some success in the Blueray world right now. Sony has announced that Click, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, and Black Hawk Down will be the first Sony films released on 50GB dual-layer Blu-ray disc. Although Blu-ray discs have been available on the market for several months now, these are 50GB dual-layer discs as opposed to the current discs being only 25GB. Pricing for the Sony films has not been publicly released …

2006-02-16 07:00  PS3: Sony Verifies PS3 1080p and BluRay
Sony is surveying their Playstation Underground members about their feelings on HDTV use and importance. The questions are telling, but most importantly, they seem to verify that the Playstation 3 will indeed have a BlueRay DVD player built into it and that the games will support 1080p. Check out question number 3: 3. The PlayStation 3 will include BluRay, the high definition DVD technology, and support games in resolutions of up to 1080p, (the highest supported standard on the market.) Given th …
