2007-10-16 21:25 Everybody loves this tree.
This tree has the good fortune to live in the Durban Botanical Gardens. The very long, very low branches attract children of all ages. They are so accessible, and so flexible, and appear to be strong enough for the smaller ones to enjoy a swing. While the tree seems to enjoy the attention, the park keeper takes no chances, and quickly reminds visitors there will be no climbing in the trees.

The Botanical Gardens has a lovely small lake surrounded by trees and a little bush. It's a popular place for people to sit and read or contemplate, and for good reason.

2007-10-14 19:43 You sit over there!
These two were totally relaxed as I stood approximately 1m from them, while taking this photo. They took a short break from preening, to pose for the picture. Once done, I thanked them for their patience and co-operation, and they promptly resumed where they left off. They live in the Durban Botanical Gardens, and have so many visitors, one more or less makes no difference to them.

2007-10-13 05:06 Chapter 4: Everybody Dies
Chapter 4: Everybody Dies Six years before Jacob Mallow was a bright young man, the interviewer decided. His eyes were wide and always searching, so he looked lost, but he would probably contribute to some graduate program in bioengineering just not this one. The interviewer glanced at Jacob s folder and knew he wouldn t get in. His test scores and grades were as exceptional as those of any plausible candidate. Hell, he hadn t even heard of the St. Louis college Jacob had attended. On the …

2007-10-05 18:28 Homeschool Day at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens
Today was one of two "Homeschoolers Take Over" events at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens this fall. We missed the last one because I procrastinated about registering and it filled up, but this one we got to attend, even though it was almost practically sort of gently raining, and the kids had a lot of fun. Here come the homeschoolers! Look out, deciduous holly tree collection! We were divided into three groups, and each group travelled with its own "garden teacher" through different stations where …

2007-10-01 19:03 Cultivating L.A.
Yesterday was glorious! Rhoda and I went on the Cultivating L.A. Tour, co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Conservancy. It was a marvelous, self-guided tour of many Japanese gardens in Los Angeles, Pasadena and San Gabriel. We received historical info, botanical info and cultural info. We started out at the docent location closest to my house. The residential gardens of Norton Avenue in Leimert Park are very beautiful and meticulously maintained. Anyone can just drive thru the area to see the sights …

Penang known as Pearl of the Orient is made up of Province Wellesley (Seberang Prai) in Peninsular Malaysia as well as the beautiful Penang Island linked by the Penang Bridge or ferry. There is no airport in Seberang Prai. The airport is located in Bayan Lepas, Penang Island. I love Penang island where I grew up as it is self-contained with beautiful beaches and hills click here for pictures It is also famous as a food paradise picture source of Penang Hill If you want to see monkeys in the wild …

2007-09-23 12:37 spring blooms, spring love
Spring is in the air! After seeing a beautiful shot of peach blossoms on one of my colleague's computer, I just had to squeeze in a bit of time this morning before a big lunch (that's the next post). Despite a marathon event held in one part of the Botanical Gardens which overcrowded the area, flooding the greens with runners, families and port-a-loos, I was determined ignore the noise and excess bodies to look for those blossoms before they wilted away. The Royal Botanical Gardens in Sydney cov …

A trip out west to Pittsburgh and Cincy to do the college conveyance thing, combined with this year's version of a "vacation" brought in more positive experiences in both cities. Pittsburgh is a treasure; I know my viewpoint is tilted as my daughter's attending college there. But I'd like to believe I'm being at least somewhat objective about the place anyway. One can't look at the physicality of the city and not be affected by the dips, the drop-offs, the wrap-around turns one whips around, sel …

Saturday was the first, Sunday the second - the first weekend of spring. Cool, wet weather had been forecast, instead it was glorious - the sun was shining, it was quite warm and there was not a cloud in the sky. Sunday was Father's Day - we went for a drive and then to the local Botanical Gardens. We wandered through the Chinese camelia gardens and the little zoo for Ben to see the animals. He loves the zoo, especially the goats, donkeys, rabbits and pigs. The pigs stink, really stink, but ther …

2007-09-01 16:00 Take a Kitty-Kat Break - The Botanical Gardens of Buenos Aires
Would you call yourself a dog-person, or a cat-person That may seem like a strange way to begin an article regarding travel in Argentina, but your answer may very well determine your desire to visit the Jardín Botánico (Botanical Gardens) in Buenos Aires. Dogs are not allowed within the park gates. You may wonder why they would ever ban dogs from a park - after all, they are man's best friend. Although I was never given a full explanation behind this prohibition, I assume that the rule was made …

2007-09-01 11:30 A short hiatus
Dear friends in food I am exiting the blogosphere for a short while due to some health issues. It is nothing even remotely serious. Well, except for the fact that I cannot face food right now. I cannot bear the taste, smell, sight or even thought of food. Oh the irony. So recipes, the kitchen and my little blog are on the outs. I hope to be back in a week or two when the earth returns to its axis. In the meantime here are some photos from Canberra's botanical gardens. I was taken there on a litt …

I don't know how on earth it can possibly be Labor Day weekend already, but I'm excited about it. The weather forecast looks to be tremendously beautiful with mild temps and sunshine for days. That means I just may be able to come out of my hermit like hut and go have some fun - OUTSIDE! Maybe we'll take a trip to the zoo or botanical gardens for some outdoor exercise, or hey.. just run around the yard like fools. As for other things, I didn't bother with the treadmill or bike today, or anything …

2007-08-31 12:48 An Open Letter to Husker Fan - 2007 Edition
Dear Husker fan, Well, here we are again as we stand on the curb, waiting to depart on another long journey. Before I go into my annual rant about my true feelings for you, I need to digress for a moment. When I was a kid, I watched a LOT of TV. I watched game shows, sitcoms and pretty much everything in between. I'd watch just about anything at anytime, much to the disdain of my parents. One show my folks loved was one of the shows I liked the absolute least. Fantasy Island ran from 1978 to 198 …
