The Sunday Times: He says that he is œinherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa because œall our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours whereas all the testing says not really , and I know that this œhot potato is going to be difficult to address. …

2007-10-23 17:21 The Eats Sheet: Chicken Stock
What's the difference between decent chicken soup and really good chicken soup The stock. Now, normally, when I want a quick bowl of chicken soup I throw a couple of bullion cubes into boiling water for the stock. But recently, I discovered a much tastier, and less salty way. C likes to roast a chicken periodically. We'll eat the drumsticks et al. with mashed potatoes Thanksgiving Turkey style and then make a variety of dishes with the leftover meat. Favorites include chicken noodle soup, chicke …

To Our Readers Unfortunately, an older and unedited version of the COHA piece entitled œThe OAS: On its Deathbed was inadvertently sent out to a very small cohort of COHA readers on October 17 before an error was discovered and the press run was immediately aborted. Due to a computer editing error, the author, Sean Bartlett did not catch that two different facts were spliced into one sentence. Jose Miguel Insulza, as a young man in his late twenties, was a political director in the Chilean For …

2007-10-22 18:24 Least Surprising Education Headline of the Year
The Center on American Progress sponsored an event last week focused on college rankings. I was on the panel along with a representative of U.S. News & World Report, and recent late-night comedy star Paul Glastris. During the Q&A, I made a point that I try to make whenever someone gives me a chance, and sometimes even when they don't, which is that the problem of constantly-rising college costs is actually more connected to the U.S. News rankings than people commonly understand. It's well-known …

2007-10-19 23:47 Schremp down, Jacques up, that's the way Lowe likes to...
It's Friday evening and probably no one else, outside of his family, cares that JF Jacques has been recalled by the Oilers for the 46th time. In the latest edition of Mass. Transit, the burly winger's on his way to Calgary for the first '08 installment of the Battle of Alberta while Rob Schremp makes his way back to the AHL Falcons where he's most likely to team with Robert Nilsson and re-create their late '07 season magic. It was a short stay for Schremp and after a somewhat promising opening g …

2007-10-19 00:12 How To Build A Blogger From The Ground Up - The Fourth and Final PB Round-Up Post
Hi All, Well, I have finally arrived at the fourth and final post in my Project Blogger Round-Up Series, and it is going to be a long one. Part One can be found here . Part Two can be found here . And, Part Three can be found here. In part three, I talked about what went on from about the second week in the contest to the end of May. 2007-10-18 22:49 Merit Pay Mania
I'm a day late to the merit pay roundabout between the American Prospect's Ezra Klein, the Atlantic's Matt Yglesias, and the New Republic's Jason Zengerle. But the points are still worth discussing, particularly Ezra's kick-off post, which begins thusly: I'm always amused by well-paid journalists and pundits complaining that teacher's compensation isn't closely enough linked to performance. Is Megan [McArdle, like Matt an Atlantic blogger] hauled into [ Atlantic Editor] James Bennet's office onc …

2007-10-18 12:04 Teradata Magazine | Teralinks: EBA solution expands healthcare choices
[3Q 2004] AS AMERICAN BUSINESSES continue to confront double-digit increases in health insurance rates, some are simply dropping coverage altogether. For those companies continuing employee health benefits, annual cost increases of 10%-15% have taken a toll on the bottom line, forcing employers to shift an ever-increasing share of healthcare costs to their employees. In turn, healthcare payors are striving to provide more information to these employees to help them more effectively manage their …

[2Q 2004] Getting a return on your IT investment it's not only an idea of economic necessity whose time has come, but it's also a need that the data warehouse is ready to meet. How As this issue's special section shows, the specifics will differ from enterprise to enterprise, modified by different business rules and conditions. But there is one fundamental approach that can make ROI a reality. If you view the data warehouse as part of a learning process as well as a working process, then you'll …

[3Q 2002] ORGANIZATIONS THAT HAVE ALREADY MADE the move to an enterprise-wide data warehouse powered by Teradata can clearly see the benefits in a number of ways, not the least of which is a better bottom line. A well-designed warehouse affords companies the flexibility to adapt to changing business environments, instead of being hamstrung by their inability to change their decision-support environment as fast as the business is evolving. It also provides lightning-fast replies to sophisticated …

Instead of capital gains tax cuts (which only impact the rich) or further tax cuts for corporations how about eliminating income taxes (payroll taxes) for working Canadians and families who earn less than $100,000 a year. Tax break not dead: Flaherty The Harper government is examining how to make good on its pledge to grant Canadians a capital gains tax break in the 2008 budget, says Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, who avoided the measure in the last two fiscal plans because of cost and design di …

In fact, depending on how much income you have from other sources, you may have to report up to 85% of your benefits on Form 1040 and pay the resulting federal income tax hit. When this happens, you're effectively getting …

Plainly put, it doesn't matter what customers have always done or what they say they want, what matters - and has proven more valuable to the customers - is to identify from their present actions what they are amenable to at the moment." The power may be in the hands of the WWE Fan Nation to determine ECW Champion CM Punk s Cyber Sunday opponent, but given the options provided by ECW General Manager Armando Estrada, they must essentially choose the least of three evils. 2007-10-17 11:00 Tennessee Tax Tally
Hat tip to Adam Graham over at Adam's Blog for pointing me to this report. The National Tax Foundation released their state rankings for 2008 and included the state rankings for 2003 through 2007 as well. Tennessee, by virtue of its lack of a state income tax, shows in the mid teens for all 6 years. We ranked either 15, 16 or 17 in these years and are currently at 16th in the nation overall. I thought I would look at the numbers for the last couple of years and examine the top and bottom of the …
