2007-08-31 15:53  Who Is Allah
I once took a Middle East archeology course, back when "Muslims" were "Moslems". The professor was a scholar of Egyptology, had directed several digs in North Africa. She was an inspiring lecturer, and somewhere in the middle of the course, she invited her students to do a comparison of the Koran with the Old Testament. I took her up on it, because I wanted a A in the course, but mainly because even a cursory comparison had me laughing out loud. Seems old war-mongering Mohammed lifted, almost ve …

Filed under: Features, PC, Retro, Adventure If you're the sort that hungers for the golden age of the adventure game, you may find what you're looking for in Fate by Numbers, a free, episodic FMV adventure that had its first episode released recently. The futuristic noir is not just unique because of its genre but also for the way it came to fruition, the end result of a graduate school project. We asked director Paul van der Meer to tell us a bit more about how he and his team created their gam …

2007-08-24 12:32  RIP VBK
Saw the obituary for Butch van Breda Kolff in our paper today, written by one of my mentors in this business, Steve Marcus. VBK was a former Knick (1946-50) and an NBA coach (he also coached Bill Bradley at Princeton). Everyone knows the story about him and Wilt at the NBA Finals. Most also know he and Pistol Pete didn't get along in New Orleans. I can't tell you much about that man you haven't already read in obituaries or books. If you don't mind, I wanted to use the blog today to tell the sto …

2007-08-24 07:59  Wry writing - P.G. Wodehouse
A great lady called Breda Foley - my other mother - introduced me to P.G. Wodehouse when I was very young. I used to love visiting her house with its panelled library. It seemed huge to me then, but it was probably a fairly modest room. I remember you needed one of those special rolling ladders to get to the upper shelves, which was way cool. I picked up a copy of Ring For Jeeves at my favourite second-hand bookstall the other day [a nasty paperback - a far cry from Mrs Foley's wonderful, musty …

2007-08-23 23:07  I Liked Butch van Breda Kolff
I'm sorry to learn that he passed away .When I was 13 and he was coaching the New Orleans Pride, I got his autograph at the Sizzler on Veterans. He was very kind. What can you say about a coach who said that Bill Bradley and Wilt Chamberlain, two of his players, weren't hungry enough Oh, and his last college coaching job was at Hofstra.

2007-08-23 22:48  Chaney Headed to Florida
Center Allen Chaney of New London, Conn., a 6-8 low post center who blew up this summer at Rbk. U., reportedly will verbal to Florida. We thought Chaney was an Atlantic 10 prospect before the live period, but he deserves credit for attracting suitors like the Gators, UConn and St. John's. The Juice, which added guard Brandon Jennings of Oak Hill, Va., Academy to a roster that also included Lance Stephenson of Lincoln and Erving Walker of Christ the King, defeated the Metro Hawks, while the Playa …

And worst of all is the person who acts as exegete of The Word–whether it be from the Talmud, the Bible, the Koran, or any other book already written or yet to come. I am not fond of giving advice–no one can pound opinions into another's head–but here is a piece that costs you nothing: Never trust a man who reads only one book. - page 160 The above is in reference to the agents of The Inquisition, who play a frighteningly large part in Arturo Pérez-Reverte's Purity of Blood, up …

2007-08-21 15:58  New digs for CRI
Communications Resources Inc. is sprucing up its new space at 1460 Breda Drive. Earlier this summer, the Chattanooga-based distributor of Nortel Networks products bought the 5,400-square foot office-warehouse property that fronts I-640. Tony Presnell, VP of Knoxville Operations, said the company is having the building's interior finished and is looking to move in sometime around Labor Day. CRI is currently located on Schubert Road, near Merchant Drive. According to county records, CRI paid $415, …

2007-08-20 17:15  THE BARE MINIMUM
I don't know whether this Associated Press dispatch has actually gotten around. But it is a report at once idiotic and, coming from a Dutch Catholic, naturally self-abnegating. Bishop Martinus "Tiny" Muskens, from the southern diocese of Breda, has called on Catholics to call God "Allah" and to pray to Allah. This is reducing theological and philosophical differences, that is, to their bare minimum. In fact, to nothing. Oh, if only the Sunnis would call God Allah, there'd be so much less bloodsh …

2007-08-20 16:44  Going To Oceanview Tonight
At three o'clock today we tried to take the M out to SF State. The overhead sign at Church Station switched from showing only "K in Seven Minutes" to "Next Trains In Subway - Delayed." We left the station in disgust. Looks like it's not a whole lot better two hours later. That shot is from 4:45 pm today. There are now nine M trains bunched up on the east side of West Portal, and NextMuni's predictors are showing a thirty-minute service gap out in Oceanview - a gap that should hit downtown right …

2007-08-20 02:05  Let's Call God "Allah" and Jesus "Slappy White"
Tiny Muskens, a Dutch Roman Catholic Bishop in Amsterdam, released another nifty idea this week upon his wooden shoe wearing sheep. Minister Muskens, well-known for stupidity aplenty, came up with a fresh game plan of which he said would aid the Dutch, yea, the entire world in getting along with Muslims Gone Wild. Tiny proposed "that people of all faiths refer to God as Allah to foster understanding." Well, isn't that special How precious. God bless you, Tiny. According to the Netherlands' bigge …

2007-08-17 19:09  Catholic bishop urges Christians to refer to God as "Allah"
In a sign that Europe is moving one step closer to Sharia law, I spied this article in FOX News. I actually wanted to follow up on this report as I heard it last night originally on Hannity & Colmes. Essentially, the Catholic priest has entered into his own plea deal with terrorism. By pandering to fundamentalism, it would seem the priest is hoping to strike a chord with militant Islam: I bow to your god, and in return, you spare my life. After reading the report and watching Hannity & Colmes, I …

2007-08-17 09:01  No God but Allah
Cranmer was not intending to comment on this facile contribution to Muslim-Christian relations, but so many of his Communicants have pleaded with him to do so that he has no option but to feed his flock. This is Bishop Martinus Muskens of Breda in the Netherlands, who has suggested that Christians should refer to God as Allah as it would promote better relations with Muslims. œGod doesn t mind what he s called, he said. œSomeone like me has prayed to Allah yang maha kuasa (Almighty God) for ei …

2007-08-17 04:04  Jehovah's new name
According to a Dutch priest, Tiny Muskens (you read that right), it might be better for interreligious relations if "Catholic churches" called God "Allah" to promote rapprochement with Muslims. I'm not sure what the phrase "Catholic churches" is supposed to mean. Priests only All practicing Catholics, be they clergy or laity Fr. Muskens's reasoning isn't as alien as it might first appear. I was all set to write a big post about this, but it looks like American Crusader already beat me to it... Please keep that in mind when reading the article. So why worry about one person in another country and what they think Well it's obvious that the story is getting some attention. That means that others are going to be exposed to this way of thinking. And this, in my humble opinion, is where the new media comes …

2007-08-16 18:12  There is no God but Who
Bishop Tiny Muskins of Breda, the Netherlands, has urged his fellow Dutch Catholics to start calling God Allah and has suggested replacing the national holiday Whit Monday, which comes the day after Pentecost, considered the birthday of the church, with an Islamic religious day, according to WorldNetDaily .The purpose of these concessions is to ease tensions between the adherents of Christianity and those of Islam, which Bishop Muskins in 2005 called a religion without a future because of its "v …

Do you ever see a headline in a newspaper or at a site online which catches your attention, but for some reason you just can't convince yourself to read the content I saw one of those headlines yesterday and while I didn't succumb to reading the article at that moment, I broke down and read it today. Tiny Muskens, the bishop of Breda, told the Dutch TV program "Network" Monday night he believes God doesn't mind what he is called, Radio Netherlands Worldwide reported.
