2007-10-14 00:07  Dinner and Tour
The Chef is beginning to prepare dinner, so why don t we take a tour while there s still light, for anycat or anydog who wants There s still be nibbles on the table until dinner. I m sorry we don t have a wonderful fall foliage display, but fall is very short here, only a week or two, and it was a couple weeks ago. Worse, it was a windy week and all the leaves blew off as soon as they turned so we never got a display at all this year! Hey! I don't like going out much other than on my balcony, 'c …

2007-10-10 11:29  The Rest Of the Thanksgiving Table
As tasty as the turkey was and as much as I'd love to be solely eating turkey, we also had "fixins" at the table. I made garlic-mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce and roasted brussel sprouts. I'm not trying to be fancy here and show you something new flavour combo...it was Thanksgiving and you want good, tasty dishes that will take your memories of all your previous Thanksgiving dinners. Garlic-Mashed Potatoes 6 large Yukon Gold potatoes, cut into chunks 6 cloves of garlic milk un …

2007-10-07 02:14  I've heard it's October now.....
The beginning of this month kind of caught me off guard and I feel like I've spent the week trying to adjust to the new reality. Especially hard to believe since it feels like August outside, and not in a good way, but in a humid smoggy way. But now there's no denying it, because this weekend is Canadian Thanksgiving and we're getting ready for a feast with friends tomorrow, including one of my favorite holiday foods, the brussel sprout: I'm not sure why we don't eat them more often since I like …

2007-09-06 04:26  Distant space collision meant doom for dinosaurs
QUOTE A collision 160 million years ago of two asteroids orbiting between Mars and Jupiter sent many big rock chunks hurtling toward Earth, including the one that zapped the dinosaurs, scientists said on Wednesday. Their research offered an explanation for the cause of one of the most momentous events in the history of life on Earth -- a six-mile-wide (10-km-wide) meteorite striking Mexico's Yucatan peninsula 65 million years ago. That catastrophe eliminated the dinosaurs, which had flourished f …

2007-09-01 17:46  September Musings...
Seems that the first of a new month brings tid-bits that don't quite make it into other posts...and a time to look back and plan ahead. 1. Ran up to the giant office supply store in my area - only one - to buy ink cartridges for my printer. Now I've had this printer for a while - got it when I lived in Tennessee so we are talking at least seven years. It is an HP DeskJet 693C (maybe those numbers should have told me something)...inquired as to the price of ink and was told close to $78. Gotta te …

2007-09-01 13:44  Fruit and vegetable markets, Wellington
Visiting the weekly fruit and vegetable markets in Wellington was one of the highlights of my recent trip. I spent a happy couple of hours on the Sunday, browsing first at the Victoria Street Markets and then rounding off my morning at the Waitangi Park Markets .There was plenty of fresh cheap produce--nothing fancy or gourmet--with the locals out in force stocking up the fridge. I came away with my own bounty of homemade jams and chutneys (feijoa jam, pineapple chutney, pear chutney and rhubarb …

2007-08-31 19:46  Belgium Represses Free Speech
Or Europe Not as Enlightened as the Left Preaches In Belgium, an appeals court has upheld the ban against a protest against the "Islamisation" of Europe. Doesn't our left always hold up the continent as a paragon of political virtue Yet, in the heart of the EU, a march is banned because it might hurt the feelings of others. The mayor of Brussel's refused to issue a permit for the march because it might offend Muslims. Don't most politically motivated marches tend to offend one group or another i …

2007-08-30 04:56  Lionel Hampton in concert - 1956
( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.) A few weeks ago when I had visited Brussels, Patrick Humbert gave me a picture made by Ed van der Elsken, the great Dutch photographer. He made a lot of beautiful pictures, but for me his book Jazz with a lot of 1950s jazz pictures is really great. The picture I received from Patrick reads on the reverse Lionel Hampton Big Band. 1959, but that is not correct. This picture was taken during the evening of the legendary concert at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam 24t …

2007-08-26 20:11  Arthur & Kathryn's Garden Party
Garden Parties generally aren't my thing. Tea, scones and croquet are a little bit above my station. But when Arthur from the TVWC was holding a garden party I thought it would be good to show my face. My plan was to use TomTom to find the place but I've had an issue because I'd seemed to have lost the bracket (Hence why my drive back from Cheltenham the other week was so adventurous). Luckily I found it this afternoon, which was just as well as I had lost the directions. Of course as I drove th …

SCIENCE Edward Willett When I was a kid, I was a picky eater. I knew what I liked, I knew what I didn't like, and I knew what I was sure I wouldn't like if I ever tried it, which I had no intention of doing, because why should I force myself to eat something I already knew I didn't like I remember my first visit to a Chinese restaurant. As the adults in our party chowed down on interesting concoctions of vegetables and noodles and meat in exotic sauces, I had a hamburger. They weren't getting me …

2007-08-24 19:05  Campaign 2008 - Wrap-Up - Updated
Allow me to put the satire aside for a second and talk about this election campaign. It has been a gob-smacking affair on a number of fronts. One. While this is as unpleasant for me as eating liver stuffed with brussel sprouts, I must concede that Stephane Dion has run an intelligent campaign. Not so much intelligent from the strategy perspective - that hissy fit in the final minutes of the english debate certainly confirmed voters' fears that he hadn't the chops to run a country. But aside from …

I know that Jamie Oliver is a busy boy. He has his healthy food in schools campaign, his cookery shows, his books, restaurants, and even his Sainsbury s ad. But does he really need an animated version of himself to help him out with his busy schedule Apparently he does. The chef is teaming with Aardman Animations to bring us Little J, a cartoon that follows our Jamie in what is called his ˜comically surreal quest to discover the secret to becoming a truly great chef.
