2007-10-19 14:44 Week 7 NFL Fantasy Flops
This article was originally published at my other site, End Zone Buzz Week 7 of the NFL season is upon us, so let's take some time to look at potential flops on your fantasy team. QB Ben Roethlisberger: The good news for Big Ben is that he gets his top two receivers, Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes, back after brief absences. The bad news is, the Steelers are playing at Denver and their two Pro Bowl cornerbacks, Dre Bly and Champ Bailey. Together, they have helped the Broncos become the number on …

Okay, I'm treading on dangerous territory here -- but, whatever, I'm allowed to be kinda mean to Notre Dame this week -- so: everybody remember these Well, uh, check out Rakes of Mallow's prediction for the remainder of Notre Dame's season: I think we're going to be competitive at least for a while against Southern Cal, losing in the two to three touchdown range when everything is settled, which is when the real fun begins. Everyone will be on watch for Navy to end the streak, then for Air Forc …

2007-10-19 02:32 Nevada caucus invisible to major political pundit
By Jon Ralston, Sun Columnist Published in the Sun on Oct. 19, 2007 Some end-of-the-week revelations, observations and perturbations, all pithy and culled from sources near and far: The Incredible Shrinking Caucus: I knew The Little Caucus That Could was getting the Rodney Dangerfield treatment back East. 2007-10-19 00:09 Any ND-USC livebloggers
Is there anybody out there who will be attending tomorrow's USC-Notre Dame game, who would be interested in liveblogging a few posts via cell phone for the Irish Trojan's Blog If you've got a camera phone, I can set things up so that you can post photos directly to the blog, and if you've got any kind of cell phone, I can give you a phone number to call to leave audio posts. I've got a liveblogger lined up for the Buffalo-Syracuse game, but considering this blog is called the Irish Trojan, I fig …

2007-10-18 12:35 All hail the lurkers!
So yesterday's de-lurking day was a great success, and I managed to bully a few lurkers out of the woodwork. And scored some pretty decent compliments too. But not everybody showed up to the party. According to my stat counter, which I totally don't know (or care to know) how to use to it's full KGB potential tells me I had way more hits than comments yesterday. And (my own neurotic psycho-analysis of that sitch)tells me that can only mean one thing. That those who came, read, didn't buy into my …

You didn't think I was gonna let this one go without mentioning, did you Following the 38-14 Rutgers victory over Syracuse, Scarlet Knight beat writers Tom Luicci and Alex Delanian were asked seven questions about the game. Everything was going smoothly, until... 6. How much was this Rutgers putting it all together or Syracuse just having nothing Luicci: Rutgers played well, but Syracuse is pathetic. The Orange can't run, can't defend and aren't well coached. Even Greg Robinson said yesterday it …

2007-10-16 19:36 Osborne hired as interim Nebraska A.D.
Part 1 of the Stewart Mandel Thesis has come true: Nebraska legend Tom Osborne has been named interim Athletic Director to replace the Steve Pederson, who was fired yesterday. (Hat tip: EDSBS .) Part 2 of the Mandel Thesis has Osborne firing Cornhuskers coach Bill Callahan and replacing him with Buffalo head coach Turner Gill, himself something of a Nebraska mini-legend. Will it happen I dunno, but this article from last month did note that "Gill still talks regularly with former Cornhuskers coa …

"The head coach of the Syracuse Orange is facing the biggest game in his three seasons with the Orange." - John Kekis, The Associated Press That's the story currently making the rounds of newspapers around the country. Even Rochester D&C columnist Bob Matthews feels that even if the game this weekend isn't "a must win or can't lose proposition for Syracuse Orange coach Greg Robinson...it has to be close." Greg Robinson has had a few "biggest games of his career" this season. Washington was the f …

2007-10-16 17:41 Cry Into Your Dallas Eliuk Jersey All Winter Long
The National Lacrosse League, home to many a Syracuse lacrosse alum, has cancelled the 2008 season. In a savvy move out of the NHL playbook, the players rejected the latest proposal from the league over salary and other issues. League Commish Jim Jennings is less than pleased: "I would like to apologize to our fans, first and foremost. We are deeply disappointed that the PLPA's executive committee rejected our proposal without permitting all of the players to vote on the league's final offer. Th …

2007-10-16 15:20 Native American Heritage Month Poster 2
Once upon a time. .. For centuries the Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota people gathered in the summertime near running streams to refresh their bodies and their spirits. There were ceremonies to be performed, marriages to be celebrated, newborn children to meet, and old stories to be retold. Where Cherry Creek meets the Cheyenne River, this wide valley was a favorite place for gathering. It was central for the hunting bands of the Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota. Buffalo were still in abundance to the west …

2007-10-15 21:03 Nebraska A.D. fired, Callahan likely next; UB's Turner Gill to replace him
Nebraska athletic director Steve Pederson was fired Monday, and it seems almost inevitable that football coach Bill Callahan will be next. If Callahan is shown the door, some Buffalo fans are worried that Nebraska might try to lure Heisman finalist and former Osborn/Solich/Callahan assistant Turner Gill away from resurgent UB *. Gill interviewed for the top job in Lincoln back in 2004 before it was ultimately offered to Callahan. He was hired by Buffalo in '06. Columnist Steve Sipple of the Linc …

2007-10-15 17:44 But You Already Knew All This
I spent the weekend at one of those convention/seminar/retreats where you are separated from the known world from 9am til 11pm for three straight days and provided with minimal access to the information coming from the outside. What's funny about these kinds of situations is that when you finally do rejoin society, even the smallest shifts or changes have a huge effect on you. " Why Did I Get Married is the #1 movie at the box office Good God, put me back in cryogenics!" So you can imagine the s …

2007-10-15 14:23 Technology To Detect Terrorists
ScienceDaily reports on new technologies that detect the 'dangerous intentions' of those people on the move: Airport screeners, customs agents, police officers and members of the military who silently pose that question to people every day, may soon have much more than intuition to depend on to determine the answer. Computer and behavioral scientists at the University at Buffalo are developing automated systems that track faces, voices, bodies and other biometrics against scientifically tested b …
