2007-08-20 04:10  Something in the Air
Over the past few days, Beijing has seen an abundance of a very rare entity: happy cab drivers. Sure, I got a ride with one cranky driver who seemed preoccupied with not being confined to a single lane. But most were like Ma Kuishan, who was dangerously close to giddy as he drive through northeast Beijing on Friday evening. "Normally, we'd be stuck in a traffic jam right now," he said, as he nosed his cab through a intersection full of cars, cyclists and pedestrians. It was crowded, but nothing …

It's a long way from becoming a reality but it's a lot closer than it's ever been. Roamfree.com is an Australian tourism company which has just committed twenty million dollars to the formation of an Australian Tour de France team. While many Australians have done very well in the event for many years, including Cadel Evans with his second place this year, we've never had an Australian team. The plan is to attract prominent Australian cyclists like Cadel Evans, Robbie McEwan, Michael Rogers Stua …

2007-08-02 06:00  Reflections on Le Tour II
Anybody watch the Tour de France I know a lot of people who did, and not only hardcore cycling fans like yours truly. Just in case you missed it, though, the Discovery Channel team, America's only team in the Greatest Race had the best year ever by a USA-based team, better than any of the seven years of the Tour de Lance. Last Sunday, Team Discovery Channel escorted the maillot jaune, the yellow jersey, worn by Alberto Contador, onto the Champs-Élysé;es in Paris. America's team also had the thir …

The results are in from Bill Strickland's Official Unofficial Tour de France competition. 2007-07-30 16:22  Tell it like it is (updated)
From this sensible article on cheating in sports by JERÉ LONGMAN for the New York Times : Fausto Coppi of Italy, who won the Tour de France in 1949 and 1952, was once asked if he ever fueled himself with amphetamines. "Only when necessary," he said. How often was that "Most of the time," Coppi replied. The Tour de France ranges from 3,000 to 4,000 kilometres long (1,800 to 2,500 miles) which must be covered really fast in three weeks over hill and dale with just two rest days. Evidence is pretty …

Redemption This year's troubled Tour de France was partially redeemed by a thrilling 19th stage time trial. Levi Leipheimer, the overall third place rider, blew away the filed with a spectacular ride (average speed of 53 kph) and came within 8 seconds of overtaking Cadel Evans. Evans, in turn, came within 23 seconds of overtaking Alberto Contador, the yellow jersey. Contador rode the time trial of his life to barely hang on. With all the problems that the Tour had, one senses that a sea change i …

2007-07-30 12:08  Contador conquers the dope scarred Tour de France
Alberta Contador a 24  year-old cyclist from Spain, won over 600,000 dollars in a Tour de France.  Doping accusations once again marred the most valued cycling event in the world.  A favorite, Alexandre Vinokourov tested positive for testosterone, after winning a stage early in the race.  Tour officials hooked race leader Michael Rasmussen late in the event, when his team dumped him following revelations that he missed doping tests at key points in training this year. This year's Tour ended with …

The word for the week brought to mind one of my favourite movies Phenomenon the story of an ordinary man who sees a light descend from the sky and discovers he has super-intelligence and telekinesis. As much as I adore the movie and soundtrack I figured it was time to create my own phenomenon by not writing, for the third week in a row, on something to do with entertainment. Perplexed, I considered some of my personal phenomenons. Survival, inner peace, total happiness, growing up when I got to …

2007-07-30 04:03  Thanks Cadel
It was an amazing three weeks. A lot of people ended up calling the Tour de France the Tour de Farce due to the many drug disqulaifications but the race will be back next year, cleaner and better. While some saw the drug issues as an indication of what a dirty sport cycling is, I see it as proof that the officials are no longer prepared to take a casual attitude to doping. Cycling is getting cleaner and the clean riders showed their disgust at those who would ruin the reputation of the world's g …

Well it was a great Tour de France. The tour was won by Alberto Contador (Spain), second place was Cadel Evans (Australia), third was Levi Leipheimer (USA). Only 31 seconds separated these riders. Just imagine that, over 91 hours in the saddle of their racing bikes and the top riders were only 31 seconds apart. WOW! This was the closest podium in the history of the Tour. The tour actually began in 1903. The team honors were won by Team Discovery. Discovery took the reigns from the US Postal Serv …

2007-07-29 16:40  Stage 20: Bennati the sprint, Contador the Tour
Lampre's Daniele Bennati disrupted Tom Boonen's leadout train, taking a big pull from Sebastien Rosseler up to victory on the Champs-Elysees. Boonen was surrounded by the other green jersey hopefuls, and the leadout men were scrambled. Bennati found himself behind Rosseler, pulling hard, with about 250 meters to ride, and when Rosseler pulled off to his left, Bennati had an unimpeded line to the finish, and just hammered. Robbie Hunter went hard up the right, with Hushovd and Zabel in between, b …

2007-07-28 19:35  US-Based Discovery Channel Team Takes First and Third in this Year's Tainted TDF
There are some that are calling for this year's Tour de France to conclude without crowning a winner.  That seems patently absurd to me.  To punish those who are clean because some used drugs or doping to compete makes no sense.  It's like calling off the World Series because some players were found to be taking steroids.  Geesh.  Take the cheaters out back and shoot 'em.  Let the honest ones have their glory. If there is any good news to come out of the Tour, at least for Americans, it's that t …

2007-07-28 16:05  Stage 19 ITT: Leipheimer dominant
Levi Leipheimer threatened not just to cement his place on the final Tour podium today, but to absolutely overturn it. Leipheimer rode the 4th-fastest time trial in Tour history to win his first career Tour stage. Starting the day in 3rd, 2:49 behind teammate and race leader Alberto Contador, Leipheimer needed 59 seconds to catch Predictor-Lotto's Cadel Evans. On the road, Leipheimer was consistently faster than Evans or Contador, who had the advantage of Leipheimer's time checks. At the day's l …
