2007-11-06 16:42 Technical Web 2.0 Startup Basics and Software Quality Improvements
A lot of people have great ideas for new web -platforms/-software but simply lack the knowledge about an engineering approach to software development. This article addresses those companies/startups (seen as software buyers->customers), as well as software developers. So please don´t get confused when i´m trying to bring examples for both of those groups. When you start a software project, you need to ensure your services are better in comparison to others. From a startup/customer point of view …

The Lyon Monterrey Estates in Rancho Santa Margarita is a private gated community that boasts curb appeal and cul-de-sac streets . 2007-10-14 22:47 lightning talk
What the heck is a "Lightning Talk" A lightning talk is an informal, quick, fun presentation. You don't need slides, and prep time is short to none. Ideally a lightning talk is under 15 minutes, and helps inspire discussion, coding, and action. This does not have to be Ruby related – anything that might be of interest to other developers would be cool. Some example topics: tools you use, tips and tricks you've picked up, favorite rails plugins, books of interest, ruby vs python/perl/erlang …

2007-09-04 16:27 Successful Startup Spotting Financing Stakes
Business Week has an interesting story on non-VC companies acting like VCs. There's nothing radically new in the piece, but plenty of facts, figures and quotes. I'll highlight some of the good stuff then we'll go through an example, you be the judge of whether this is smart or not. Some quotes: Companies that aren't full-time investors pumped $1.3 billion into 390 venture capital deals in the first half of 2007, up 30% from the $1 billion invested in about 350 deals a year earlier, according to …

2007-09-02 00:22 Capistrano 2.1 Preview #1
I had intended to wait until Net::SSH v2 (and friends) were done before making another Capistrano release, but the list of pending tickets was growing and there is still a good-sized pile of work to be done on Net::SFTP v2 before it can be released. So, I sat down this weekend and worked through the tickets, and I m happy to present Capistrano 2.1 Preview Release #1. Grab it via RubyGems from the Rails beta gem repository: gem install -s http://gems.rubyonrails.com capistrano It will install as …

2007-08-31 15:04 [Sunspots] The futurist edition
The worst strategy is whining "Whining is rarely a successful response to anything. Instead, start by acknowledging that most of the profit from your business is going to disappear soon. Unless you have a significant cost advantage (like Amazon's or Wal-Mart's), someone with nothing to lose is going to be able to offer a similar product for less money. So what's scarce now Respect. Honesty. Good judgment. Long-term relationships that lead to trust." All about hummingbirds "Hummingbirds while in …

2007-08-28 22:41 Webistrano Released
During the last meeting of the Ruby User Group Berlin, Jonathan Weiss presented Webistrano, a web application for easy deployment based on Capistrano. It was pretty impressive, and now he's released it to the public. On the site you'll find some screencasts explaining the features and the user interface, and the download of course. What I find neat about it, are the multi-stage capabilities and the multi-user support. It's easy to manage several projects and hosts. As you'd expect, it's a Ruby o …

2007-08-28 08:38 Sudoless Rails Stack on OSX
More and more of my developer friends are switching to OSX as time goes by, and they keep asking me for directions on the best setup for rails development: how to install ruby, how to install the missing libraries, and so on. My professional development life started on a PB Titanium running OSX 10.2, and continued through a PB Aluminium and a Macbook Pro. Each time I changed laptop I also reinstalled everything again, and each time I tried to come up with a better setup. Now I've finally found a …

2007-08-28 05:48 Capistrano Integration posted by jcnetdev @ Tue, 28 Aug 2007 05:48:07 -0000
I'm looking to get Lighthouse integrated with capistrano. It doesnt look like that difficult of a job using the API, but I was wondering if any of you have tried this I'd love it if every time I deployed a build to a particular environment (QA), it updated all the bugs that have been checked in since the last deployment with a comment "Deployed on QA environment". What do you think More trouble than its worth

2007-08-24 09:09 Capistrano 2 Callbacks
Converting the callbacks in my cap recipes to the new capistrano 2 format wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. It turned out I had to use fully qualified task names in the after callback instead of the non-namespaced-names. Here's a sample of working callbacks: namespace :deploy do after " deploy:setup ", " deploy:sposivip:create_galleries ", " deploy:sposivip:freeze_rails " after " deploy:update ", " deploy:site5:link_public_html ", " deploy:sposivip:link_rails ", " deploy:sposivip:link …

I'm fairly obsessed with Amazon EC2. Some of the coolest stuff I've seen people doing: Elastic Rails - Ruby, Capistrano, EC2. Cool, cool, cool. Rightscale. Make sure to check out the features page. MySQL manager and Website manager are both smart. Cloudscale. Nothing on the website to mention, but they hint good stuff on their blog

2007-08-22 17:03 A Coupla Silly Monkeys
Like Monkey like daughter, apparently. All those threats my Mom made about how my children will be more of a handful than I was have come true. My little Howler Monkey climbs all over me and screeches at the top of her wee lungs. I'd be lying if I didn't say I delight in it. I've been knitting like mad. I'm almost through chart B of Lake of the Woods. This pattern has you cast on 200+ stitches and decrease to the neck. The first rows are cumbersome and never-ending, but once you really get in a …

2007-08-21 17:54 Net::SSH 2.0 preview #1
I m really pleased with how Net::SSH v2 is turning out. I ve actually got it to a point where it s about ready for a first preview release! If you re an adventurous soul, you can grab the preview release gem (version 1.99.0) here: Net::SSH 2.0 preview #1 (1.99.0) gem Note that Net::SSH v2 is not going to be 100% backwards compatible with 1.x. Many things will work mostly the same, but here are a few of the most significant gotchas: Net::SSH.start now uses a fixed parameter list, instead of the p …

2007-08-21 14:16 Deploying Rails Applications
There's always been something of a discontinuity when it comes to creating a Rails site. The Rails framework makes writing the applications themselves a lot easier than any other common framework. The sensible defaults and conventions combine to create code that somehow just works. You race through the development phase, giddy with the speed with which you implement each feature. Then you reach the part where you have to deploy your application, and you find yourself with two black eyes, brought …

The popularity of Ruby on Rails continues to grow - the number of developers now listed on WWR has just risen past the 8000 mark. We recently added toolbox functionality to the site where members can show which Ruby gems and Rails plugins they use. It's interesting to see the wide variety of libraries currently in use and who is using them. The line up of Ruby gems installed by authoritative members stands as follows: Sqlite3 Ruby Capistrano Ruby Inline Piston Red Cloth Zen Test Ferret Mysql Par …

Thank you for thinking of me and my family. I appreciate each and every comment, good thought, prayer, and email sent our way. I've got more news on my Father's condition. Unfortunately he is not a candidate for Bypass surgery because of the damage his heart has sustained over the years. The Doctors are only able to offer palliative measures. So we wait. The word wait can't convey the dread, fear, powerlessness and sadness I feel, but I'm not certain any word could capture it fully. My Dad would …

(photo from crostini.com) I really need to get a photo of this appetizer for you all. The above photo looks sort of like it. Wish I could prepare this right now and could photograph it for real. Soon. Hopefully. The broken bone in my foot is improving, thank goodness. Crostini is an Italian word - I think it means little toasts, or something similar. That's exactly what these are. The recipe calls for a nut or fruited bread. Here in Southern California we can buy bread from La Brea Bakery (Nancy …
