2007-10-17 00:12 "If you are too busy to read, then you are too busy"
University life is still hectic but I'm getting used to it once again (when I'm completely settled it will be time for Christmas holls, clearly) and today I found the time to put Pride & Prejudice in my mp3 and now I can listen to Elizabeth and Darcy bicker all day long. *glows* Besides that, I felt like memeing, so here it is, pass by if you shall :) - * those you have read - + those you started, but didn't finish - # those you own Embolden those you loved - Add three books after the last one 0 …

2007-10-12 00:03 SETI's Search for ET Goes Exponential
SETI's hunt for ET is revving up to warp speed, thanks largely to an infusion of $25 million from Seattle's most famous science-fiction fan, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. Allen will join scientists from SETI the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence to unveil the Allen Telescope Array devoted to answering the question: Is anyone out there The observatory consists of an array of 42 radio dishes perched atop a volcanic plateau in Hat Creek, 300 miles northeast of San Francisco. "It's the lon …

2007-10-10 21:26 Three things my parents did right
Just in time, here is my entry for the group writing project !Three things my parents did right: 1. The gave me life My parents never intended to have children. They both decided after they got married that that wasn't something they wanted or needed to be fulfilled. For the first 10 years of their marriage they had an exciting life of spontaneous travel to cool places, socializing with friends, and interesting careers. They'd settled happily into their child-free life and had no room for kids w …

2007-10-10 00:03 Galactic -The Biggest Name in Town
Ever heard of the Frankfurt Galaxy It isn't one. Or rather, wasn't one. The recent demise of pro football's NFL Europa spelled doom for its franchises, you see, and one of them was called the Galaxy. Surely this is the exception that proves the rule, as more and more we're seeing the adjective form-- galactic-- seep into the lexicon. With an A+ for style points, Sir Richard Branson launched Virgin Galactic in 2004. Only a bitter cynic would describe such a title for proposed near-Earth oribital …

2007-10-08 22:01 Science vs Faith
(this entry contains some spoilers for a really nice hollywood-movie from 1997 called Contact. If you haven't seen it and don't want your experience ruined then don't read on.) Me and Ann-Sofie watched Contact a little while ago. It's in my opinion one truly great film, and one of the few scifi-movies who have some kind of grounding in "real" science. Sure, after they receive the signal it gets a little out there, but none of the scenarios presented are completely unrealistic. Of course, a certa …

2007-09-28 07:00 The Fermi Paradox: Further Reading
There are a lot of good books dealing, in whole or part, with the overall subject of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (the very acronym of SETI) and speculations on possibilities of success or failure. As such, this particular listing is merely a sub-sampling of the books that are available and should not be treated as anything close to a complete listing of works. Extraterrestrials: Where are They, by Ben Zuckerman (editor) and Michael H. Hart (editor) Alien Life: The Search for Ext …

Hello. Here is a copy of my opening remarks from the Brisbane Still Open Forum. A couple of people mentioned they wanted a copy, so here it is. Thanks. 2007-09-05 11:00 The Reord of Voyager
Today marks the thirtieth anniversary of the launch of Voyager 1 .Thirty years ago today, the Voyager 1 space probe a one-ton robotic craft whose long antennas make it look rather like a spider the size of a school bus was launched from Cape Canaveral, Fla., on a mission to reconnoiter Jupiter and Saturn. To succeed, Voyager would have to survive five years in the vacuum of space, where it would encounter cosmic rays, solar flares, the hurtling rocks and sand of the asteroid belt, and Jupiter s …

2007-09-04 07:05 New Technologies & the Search for Extraterrestrial Life -A Galaxy Insight
"Our attempts at extraterrestrial contact is like wandering about in a library where all the books are written in an indecipherable language. The only thing that's familiar is the color of the bindings." Stanislaw Lem -author of the science-fiction classic, Solaris. In his Summa Technologicae, famed science-fiction writer, Stanislaw Lem, goes on to say that "We think of ourselves as the Knights of the Holy Contact. This is another lie. We are only seeking Man. We have no need of other worlds …

Alan L. Contreras, administrator of the Oregon Office of Degree Authorization, has an interesting article at Inside Higher Ed. He begins with the assertion that: Religion and science are in different families on different tracks: science deals with is vs. isn t and religion, to the extent that it relates to daily life, deals with should vs. shouldn t .After noting that most scientists have, until recently, either ignored religion or quietly practiced their own, "Carl Sagan, Richard Dawkins, Dani …

2007-08-30 10:00 Fans of Many Colors
I read Neil Gaiman's blog pretty much every day. Just the blog, not too much else, although his site is chock full o' wonderful. One post came up recently that had me arching my eyebrows. There's a gang of his fans that are getting tattoos of his characters. These are permanent tattoos. Like forever. It got me thinking about why there isn't a group of Jo Leigh fans out there with tattoos of my characters. When I stopped laughing (which took a long time) I thought about the nature of fandom, and …

In an open letter to quotable atheists published in Scientific American, Michael Shermer, publisher of Skeptic and author of Why Darwin Matters writes: Since the turn of the millennium, a new militancy has arisen among religious skeptics in response to three threats to science and freedom: (1) attacks against evolution education and stem cell research; (2) breaks in the barrier separating church and state leading to political preferences for some faiths over others; and (3) fundamentalist terror …

2007-08-30 07:04 Mars Exploration: Secrets of the Soil
Is there life on Mars today This question has been fiercely debated by scientists for the past thirty years. The evidence sent back from Mars by two Viking Landers in 1976 and 1977 was inconclusive. In fact, NASA's first press release about the Viking tests announced that the results were positive. The "labeled Release" (LR) experiments had given positive results. But after lengthy discussions in which Carl Sagan participated, NASA reversed its position, mainly because another experiment detec …

2007-08-30 03:58 snark
I was at a party the other night where people were talking about their sun signs. You know, "yeah, I'm a cancer so I can be a real sap sometimes" or "well, of course I was the one who worked out the schedule. I'm a Virgo." I spoke to some friends who were aloof from this conversation: "I'm a Carl Sagan...." "... Carl Sagans have a variety of traits, with the probability for each trait equal to that trait's prevalence in the population."

2007-08-28 19:18 Stay of Execution
The Cetacea hold an important lesson for us. The lesson is not about whales and dolphins, but about ourselves. There is at least moderately convincing evidence that there is another class of intelligent beings on Earth beside ourselves. They have behaved benignly and in many cases affectionately towards us. We have systematically slaughtered them. Little reverence for life is evident in the whaling industry - underscoring a deep human failing... In warfare, man against man, it is common for each …

2007-08-27 06:09 Clint Curtis Guest Blogs on The Brad Blog
As many readers of this site are no doubt aware, The Brad Blog has been doggedly tracking election fraud like a pit bull with a pot roast for years. We are proud to be associated with investigative blogger extraordinaire Brad Friedman, whose efforts have almost singlehandedly dragged the Neocon election fraud machine into the harsh light of the sun. So as Clint Curtis gears up for the '08 Congressional fight in FL-24, he thought it fitting to reintroduce himself via a guest post on Brad Blog. Te …

2007-08-26 10:14 Not D. James Kennedy again
Lots of people have been sending me email to let me know that Coral Ridge Ministry is airing a program linking Darwin to Hitler. In case you missed it, this show, Darwin's Deadly Legacy, was first aired last year, and I reviewed it then, Wilkins eviscerated its premises, and even the Anti-Defamation League got in the act. It's a horrible piece of dishonest dreck, and now I guess it's going to be a yearly television event, like a demented evil version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. This has m …

2007-08-24 23:10 The top five Harry Potter gadgets that would be nice to have
Here's a fun article that talks about the cool Harry Potter gadgets that would be nice to have in real life: 1. Invisibility Cloak (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone) Why We Want It: Besides the fact that it would be supercool and supereasy to scare people There are endless spy applications. Can We Get It Cloaking technology does exist but it's more like a shed than a cloak. A team of scientists from Duke University and Imperial College London created a "cloak" that deflects microwaves aroun …

2007-08-24 18:52 A different McGrath, and Sagan again
Prof. James F. McGrath (presumably no relation to Alister McGrath) reviews Dawkins' The God Delusion. His review is charitable and thoughtful but one is still left with the feeling that Dawkins pontificating against religion is very much like a fundamentalist high-school-drop-out pontificating against science. Carl Sagan is quoted: How is it that hardly any major religion has looked at science and concluded,"This is better than we thought! The Universe is much bigger than our prophets said, gran …

2007-08-24 15:03 I had to talk about it sooner or later
I wanted to finish up my post on whale locomotion/evolution this morning, but things have come together in the blogosphere just-so that I can't ignore the issue of the "new atheism" any longer. It initially cropped up last night in the comments of the previous post in discussion of the documentary Flock of Dodos. Personally, I felt that the scenes shot of the scientists at the poker game were a bit of a set up, creating something of a straw man version of who scientists are and what they think. …

2007-08-23 20:42 Not skeptical enough
"What interests me is how people who hold themselves up as skeptics were taken in by such a ridiculous story as this. Carl Sagan was, by any account, a brilliant man. Yet he uncritically repeats an urban legend in order to show how other people are gullible. What this shows, I think, is that there are no true skeptics. People are only skeptical of things that they want to be skeptical about." Jim Slagle on the Pope who didn't actually excommunicate a comet .I think there are true skeptics but th …

2007-08-23 00:56 More lost Billions and Billions....
The Institute for Policy Innovation has a new overwrought study about the billions and billions of dollars lost in the USA and worldwide because of "download piracy" and other sordid assorted evils. Jon Newton has a good take on it here. Where is Carl Sagan when we need him..... "Billions and billions...." of lost sales and lost dollars..... Interestingly, the stats on pirate sales in and at retail prices seem to make Canada look rather well behaved by developed country standards. HK
