By Jason Webb MADRID, Oct 25 (Reuters) - The Catholic Church is preparing to beatify 498 of its members killed during the Spanish Civil War, putting them on the path to possible sainthood but reviving memories of a conflict that still divides Spain. Most of those to be honoured at Sunday's ceremony in Rome, the biggest mass beatification ever and to be attended by thousands of Spanish pilgrims, were priests or nuns killed by left-wing militias at the outbreak of the 1936-39 war. Many Catholic cl …

2007-10-18 12:24  Euro '08: Likely British-Free
The field for the European Championship, a.k.a. the World Cup minus Brazil and Argentina, is beginning to take shape with qualifying down to the final two rounds. The big news is that England, needing only a draw in Russia to put themselves in pole position for qualification, coughed up a 1-0 lead in Moscow and now have to hope for Israel to take points off of Russia in order to have any chance of qualifying. The highlights: I am left in the odd position of rooting against Israel, who cannot qua …

University life is still hectic but I'm getting used to it once again (when I'm completely settled it will be time for Christmas holls, clearly) and today I found the time to put Pride & Prejudice in my mp3 and now I can listen to Elizabeth and Darcy bicker all day long. *glows* Besides that, I felt like memeing, so here it is, pass by if you shall :) - * those you have read - + those you started, but didn't finish - # those you own Embolden those you loved - Add three books after the last one 0 …

2007-10-09 18:40  The Belgian Conundrum
Ages ago - light years in blog terms in fact - Megan noticed The Economist pointing out that the euro has lessened the pressure that Belgian politicians might otherwise face to settle their differences and observes :Now that the European Union has taken over the currency, as well as many of the trade and customs functions of traditional federal governments, Belgium as a state suddenly looks a lot less necessary. One wonders if the current era of economic integration (assuming it continues) might …

2007-10-06 20:15  Columbus, Colombo, Coln: what s in a name
I was already thinking that Monday October 8th seems way too early to be "celebrating" Columbus Day. But, today's warm and humid weather, here in Upstate New York, makes the Columbus Day Parade held in downtown Albany seem even more premature. It might be a great weekend for pumpkin picking, but it's also a good bet that those pumpkins will be over-ripe and mushy long before Halloween. While it's too early to be celebrating the Man (and, perhaps it's inappropriate to do so at all; see our post t …

2007-10-04 12:49  Chelsea to bolster coaching staff
Chelsea have confirmed they are looking to bolster Avram Grant's backroom staff and could bring in a foreign coach. Reports suggest Ajax's Henk Ten Cate will be taken on to assist Grant and assistant Steve Clarke, as Grant does not have a Uefa Pro coaching licence. A club statement said: "One of the scenarios Avram is considering is a team containing a British assistant in Steve and a foreign assistant." But the Dutchman's appointment would appear to fit with Chelsea's plan to adopt a three-pron …

2007-09-26 16:26  Separated by a common language
As I prepare to spend my last night on the Catalan coast of France before crossing over to the Catalan coast of Spain, the issue of language is at the forefront of my mind. In France we do well because my wife, Sue, speaks a very passable French, but in Spain we will have to resort to pointing at things and hoping the locals speak English. Luckily, many do, at least in tourist spots, which is what most Brits (and Americans to be honest) rely upon. Bit by bit the world is turning to English as a …

I will be incommunicado for a week as Sue and I take a walk along the Catalan coast from France into Spain. This is the fourth walking holiday we've taken with InnTravel and they've all been fabulous. The great thing about a walking holiday is that you can eat and drink to your heart's content knowing that you're only replacing the calories you lost earlier in the day plodding up some mountain.

I think the Palladium people are losing their touch. I went to the games shop this evening, and there was a new Rifts book out on Hell. But it contained exactly no rules for powersledges driven by damned-soul-turbines, super-ultra-automatic-rifles, the Demon-Haunted Juicer OCC, or power armor made to look like a devil. Nope. Rifts Hell is a neat Palladium rules version of Hell, but it's not, you know, Rifts enough. What's up with that We were just talking about Rifts earlier this evening, and I …
