2007-10-16 17:44 how'd you get those bumps on your head
The radical evangelical Christians of today tend to use the caveman approach of witnessing. Basically they whack their their poor victims over the head with the Bible, and then drag them by the hair kicking and screaming through the church doors. And then they wonder why they get so much resistance! thanks mark for your open discourse on how many Christians evangelize or share Christ with those who do not believe. we do that, i'd have to say, i have never beaten anyone up, but my brothers and si …

2007-10-16 16:25 Melvin Sokolsky: Seeing Fashion
The period between 1955 and 1970 has become widely recognized as a kind of golden age in American magazine culture. In these years the commercial imperative had failed to over-ride the arguably irrational urge to utilize mass-circulation periodicals as a platform for personal expression. Following a time of neglect or indifference, the legacy of many photographers, artists, and designers is again investigated and celebrated. One of the more unusual figures in this pantheon was Melvin Sokolsky. H …

2007-10-15 11:45 Fauna of Doom - 7 Deadliest Animals
We in the modern world have long since left behind the worries of our caveman ancestors. No longer must we fear being crushed by a mammoth or gored by a saber-toothed tiger, but there are still many formidable fauna the modern person must face. Without further ado- the 7 deadliest animals of the modern world (more...)

Growing up witha mom who was single, I never saw her buy a fancy car, beautiful clothes or shoes. She was a savvy shopper and was always at the clearance sale section at a department store and would cutsavings coupons from theSunday paper. She was happy to wear a simple gold watch, a gold necklace and a couple of gold diamond rings. Me, my sisters and brothers (one of my brothers is my twin) come from a poor to middle income family. My mother was one of the few of 16 children who got a divorc …

2007-10-09 16:19 Is everyone in Spartanburg angry
We've had our battles with Spartanburg GOP Chairman Rick Beltram, who seems - to borrow from Tim McGraw - angry all the time. But we have always assumed Beltram was the exception in Sparkle City, not the rule. And boy were we wrong. The residents of Spartanburg County Monday confirmed that they too can fume as well as, or slightly better than, their rogue leader. The heat under the great melting pot has been turned up, and it's about to boil over. That was the feeling Monday night in this city's …

2007-10-09 12:25 Financial Eye for the Broke Guy: An Interview with Dollar Stretcher's Gary Foreman
By Myscha Theriault Myscha: Over the years, I've used many of the ideas from your web site and newsletters to carve out extra money for savings and family use. What savings areas if any do you notice the most interest in For example, would you say groceries and meal prep tops the list, or is the personal care category more popular Frugal minds want to know. .. Gary : The busiest areas are probably groceries and auto financing. But, what we really want to do is to answer your question, whate …

2007-10-08 17:00 Terminal House - Walkthrough
Terminal House is another Japanese point and click room escape game. Like the other room escape games, you have to search the room to find items and clues to use for opening the door and escaping. Good Luck!! !Play Terminal House Walkthrough 1. Go to the little cupboard and get the camera and the book out of the top drawer. 2. Read the book (double click on it) Take a note of the large letters at the end. 3. Look under the sofa to get a long hook. 4. Look under the sofa cushions to get a blue di …

2007-10-03 00:04 GEICO Caveman pokes fun at The View s Sherri Shepherd
The caveman that is now part of a network sitcom (which I refuse to watch) made fun of Sherri Shepherd yesterday on "The View." If you'll remember, Sherri is the co-host who doesn't believe in evolution and who isn't sure whether the earth is round or flat. Even though I think she's pretty dumb (at least based on the comments that have given her such notoriety), I have to give her credit for being a good sport. To see my original post on the topic from a few weeks ago click here. Source: Bad Ast …

2007-10-01 15:37 Notes for entrepreneurial investors
Repeat after me: We're not stupid. We don't have to act like cavemen. Joe Nocera, a journalist, says small investors are hapless : Small investors spend hours on chat boards, where the herd mentality is fiercest. They can t bring themselves to sell losing positions, even when the stock is still going down. They bet everything on one or two high-risk stocks. I do not exempt myself from this behavior: a decade after the Crash of 87, I was loading up on tech stocks during the Internet bubble, even …

2007-09-28 19:59 I have left the cave
One of the things I have noticed during my religious odyssey is that believing mormons and disaffected mormons describe the process of changing one's religious beliefs in very different terms. To a believing mormon, one who no longer believes "fell away", and that's if they're being nice. Sometimes the more clinical word "apostatized" is used. While arguably technically correct, there is a connotation about that word that I don't like. I have come up with a new phrase that I think more accuratel …

2007-09-22 17:59 Useless Halloween Predictions
Some costumes I expect to see either in person or on the interwebs: 1. Grown Man, dressed as cat - Has detachable plates with various lolcats sayings "I can has costume" "Invisible trick-or-treat," usw. 2. Wendy's red wig - This will be a part of my costume fosho. I want to yell "Hot Juicy Burger" at the library. That is all. 3. Caveman - puh-leaze. 4. Think about some of these: Domino's Oreo Dessert Pizza facial hair, "I'm thinking Arby's" hat logo headwear. Am I missing something

A trip out west to Pittsburgh and Cincy to do the college conveyance thing, combined with this year's version of a "vacation" brought in more positive experiences in both cities. Pittsburgh is a treasure; I know my viewpoint is tilted as my daughter's attending college there. But I'd like to believe I'm being at least somewhat objective about the place anyway. One can't look at the physicality of the city and not be affected by the dips, the drop-offs, the wrap-around turns one whips around, sel …

Don't Feed The Fat People Originally uploaded by randem I love this group at Flickr. Stick Figures In Peril. How funny is that My other reason for posting this photo---I lost two pounds in THE SAME WEEK!!! I have a theory about getting my body to let go of the fat like it should. I have talked about this before, and I have put it to the test more than once and it seems to be working. My body wants to squirrel away all the fat it can in the off-chance I will be in a genuine caveman-style famine ( …

The off-beat Barry Sonnenfield series Pushing Daisies is the dark horse of the new season's rating race. At a time when you can't open YouTube without seeing a Reaper trailer, take three clicks without seeing a Heroes ad, open a paper without seeing a Caveman feature or flick on the tube without coming across an Aliens in American commercial, Pushing Daisies is a rarity - it has appeared almost only at theater advertisements. ABC has announced it won't post full episodes of Pushing Daisies onlin …

A few days ago, a kind reader who saw that my old standard sized Etch had been busted sent me a replacement standard Etch in the mail. Thanks so much, very kind of you, really. I hate to have to say this, but that brand new Etch has now crapped out on me too. This time the up and down catches all the time and then you hear this springy sound and it jumps uncontrollably. I might use this as an opportunity to experiment in Etch-a-Sketch surgery to see if I can fix the thing without destroying, but …

2007-08-31 18:03 The future, as seen from 1979
Usually I'm envious that the futures we envisioned in the past didn't come to pass, but this 1979 vision of the future looks pretty hideous. They got some of the stuff right, like flat-screen TVs and reading news onscreen, but I'm glad we don't have to wear this stupid jumpsuits and watch caveman-like soccer players. It also says "By 1990, most mail will be sent in electronic form." They were only a decade off! (Via Freakgirl .)

2007-08-31 14:02 Geico spots featuring those other cavemen
Best I could do in terms of finding the new Geico spots was this link to the Flintstones commercial on Adweek. Surprisingly, there's no mention of those other cavemen in this spot, which, like a similar one featuring The Beverly Hillbillies, is presented as a, um, mock-u-mentary uncovering how each fictitious family could really afford certain aspects of their lifestyle. (In Wilma's case, it's that necklace made of huge rocks.) Of course, the answer is by buying insurance from Geico. I don't thi …

2007-08-31 02:22 The Caveman Mystique
Alert reader Linda Carpenter has given me a heads-up about a forthcoming book that is a "take down of ev-psych style cave-masculinity". Ooh, that sounds tasty! The book is The Caveman Mystique: Pop-Darwinism and the Debates Over Sex, Violence, and Science by Martha McCaughey. Here's the book description: Has evolution made men promiscuous skirt chasers Pop-Darwinian claims about men's irrepressible heterosexuality have become increasingly common, and increasingly common excuses for men's sexual …
