2007-10-12 21:41 What Books Will We Find on the Shelves of the Khalil Gibran International Academy
Stop the Madrassa has been asking the NYCDOE to reveal to the public just exactly what is being taught in the Khalil Gibran International Academy . The DOE is still stonewalling. We still have no answers as to what textbooks are being used, what curricula is being taught, where do the teacher handouts originate from, or who is monitoring the school as promised by DOE Chancellor Joel Klein. Now we have another important question. What books are on the school s library shelves The question h …

Mayor Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Klein: Shut Down KGIA Now! Citizens for American Values in Public Education and Stop the Madrassa are again demanding answers from Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Klein about the presence of a radical imam on the Khalil Gibran International Academy s Advisory Board. First, we are asking why the KGIA even has an Advisory Board what other public school do you know of that has one a PTA, yes, but an Advisory Board Second, we want to know why one Imam Talib Abdu …

2007-10-06 13:37 Team Forms to Analyze City Schools
By JENNIFER MEDINA For years, education experts have dreamed of a group that would gather reams of data on New York City s public schools, analyzing the numbers to figure out what works, and what does not, in schools. Now, after years of major changes to the system under Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, a group of academics has formed the Research Partnership for New York City Schools to do just that kind of analysis. The partnership includes social scientists from New York University, Columbia Unive …

2007-10-05 17:18 The Department of Education Seeks New Principal for the Khalil Gibran International Academy
It does not matter who the Principal of the school is. The philosophy, curricula, and political perspective are that of its founder and creator, Dhabah Almontaser, still employed by the NYCDOE. The DOE has been operating KGIA in secrecy since September 4 th, refusing to respond to Freedom of Information Act requests. In August the DOE stated they would have the œcomplicated 6 th grade curricula ready on September 21 st . Their response to our fourth FOIL request is that KGIA will have its …

2007-09-05 17:33 Stop the Madrassa Schools NY Mayor
It was back to school time in New York City yesterday. Unfortunately, it seems New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Chancellor Joel Klein, didn't do their summer reading, because The Kahlil Gibran International Academy opened with much ado, and a small army of police escorts. Meanwhile the good folks at Stop the Madrassa, and the newest members of their nationwide Coalition, "Citizens For American Values in Education", were on a field trip to City Hall, for a press conference. (Atlas has the bes …

2007-09-02 17:12 First Person: Teachers Union Undermines Arabic-Language School
Imagine a Latina principal being hounded out of her job because she defended a Latina empowerment group s Che Guevara T-shirts. Imagine an African-American principal being hounded out of her job because she defended an African-American girls empowerment group s Malcolm X T-shirts. Neither scenario is far-fetched. But in either of the above scenarios, we d know it wasn t about the T-shirts. However, this basic fact has been obscured in the recent takedown of Debbie Almontaser, the veteran Brookly …

2007-09-01 23:29 Will Paying Students For Going To School Lead Those Students To 'A Love Of Learning'
Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Joel Klein are betting more than $40 million dollars in private money that they can bribe poor, mostly minority students to do better in school and to develop an intrinsic desire to learn. "If you're not motivated to learn, it's very hard to love learning," says Klein.

August 31, 2007 (GBN News): The plan for the NY City Department of Education to pay schoolchildren for good test scores may come at a higher price than Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Klein had anticipated. A spate of challenges, legal and otherwise, may soon be in the offing. GBN News has learned that a in a number of schools, fourth and seventh graders are planning to œhold out for higher compensation. Children are apparently organizing to refuse to take standardized tests unless the pay scal …

2007-08-29 04:03 Bibles, No Way! Madrassas, No Problem!
In past years we have seen schools and school boards remove all prayer from school, do away with Christmas plays and nativity scenes, and even shut off valedictory microphones for unapproved God-speak. In short, they have systematically prohibited any and all kinds of religious expression. So what is the next logical step The New York City Department of Education approved a proposal to open a publicly funded Muslim school. Without hyperbole, this is one of the craziest things I have ever heard. …

2007-08-28 23:19 Act as I say, not as I do.
New York City s school chancellor wants an Islamic public school Ann Arbor, Aug 28, 2007 / 09:13 am (Catholic News Agency)- The New York City Department of Education approved a proposal to open a publicly funded Muslim school. The decision, however, is not going by unchallenged. The Thomas More Law Center announced yesterday that it will represent a group of citizens opposed to the Sept. 4 opening of Khalil Gibran International Academy (KGIA). The Law Center will act as co-counsel with attorney …

2007-08-27 19:30 Importing more top-down ideas from across the pond
Sir Barber August 27th Fa fa fa fa... For some reason, big urban school districts like Chicago and New York love to bring in these British consultants to lecture about the superiority of their own top-down educational system. It must be something colonial in the drinking water that makes them think they have all the answers to the problems facing urban schools systems here. In Chicago about a decade ago, it was a school reformer named David Green, who once served as one of Her Majesty's Inspecto …

August 26, 2007 (GBN News): Mayor Bloomberg announced today that not only will he defy a planned override of his veto of the City Council bill guaranteeing children s right to carry cell phones to and from school, he now intends to put forth a complete ban on possession of cell phones throughout the city. œIf they re dangerous for kids to carry, they re dangerous for everyone , the Mayor told a City Hall news conference, œand besides, they annoy me . In the same NY Post interview in which the Chancellor recently made his controversial comments about the need for "rigorous standards" for 3, 4 and 5 year olds, he made a number of other revealing statements, including proposing that 10 th graders should be tested and steered either to vocational programs or academic classes where they can be prepared for college: œ Klein also sees a future with kids "testing out" in 10th grade and either proceeding to two more years of high school and then coll …

2007-08-21 14:29 Pro-Madrassa Rally for Khalil Gibran School
I always wanted to play the violin. In Jr. High School I signed up for the violin in music class but to my surprise the boys had already taken all the string instruments. It sure would have come in handy last night when I went to the pro-Madrassa Rally yesterday in front of the NYC Department of Education headquarters downtown on Chambers Street. 2007-08-21 13:34 The Bloomberg/Klein Plan to Segregate the "Laggards"
During the early 20th Century heyday of the American eugenics and social efficiency movement, primitive intelligence tests were used to "scientifically" label children so that the "defective" ones could be segregated into industrial education schools. Now it appears that the Bloomberg braintrust is about to use the failures generated by their non-stop achievement testing policy to launch an updated kind of reform school, this one intended to academically cleanse the crumbling high schools ahead …
