2007-10-25 14:49  Microsoft snaps a piece of Facebook
End of day yesterday, Microsoft announced a 240 million dollar investment in Facebook, the high flying social network everyone loves to talk about. The investment gives Microsoft a 1,6% ownership and suggests Facebook s market value at 15 billion. This is quite a lot of money for a simple - but admittedly smart - piece of software that was launched some three years ago by a university kid. More importantly, the deal assures Microsoft the rights to sell advertising on Facebook until 2011. Even …

2007-08-23 12:39  The "Bush Dogs" and Leftysphere
I have been watching, with some amusement I must admit, this push to purge the Blue Dog Democrats by the nutroots. It is interesting to watch the left fall in to the same sort of habits that the far right did when the Republicans held the majority. It took the nutters on the right side of the aisle a decade to get to the point where Chris Bowers et al. are today... I've got my issues with weak Republicans (see RINOvich), so I understand the desire to want to advance an agenda. It is the timing o …

2007-08-20 19:58  So many sciencebloggers, so little time [denialism blog]
As any scienceblog reader now knows, we all met up in NYC this weekend. I met many of my sciblings for the first time, including Orac, Tara, PZ, Chris Mooney and the lovely Sheril, Grrl, Zuska (we hatched an evil plot muahaha), Mo, Kemibe, Bora, Janet, Shelley, Rob Knop, RPM, Jake and Kara, Jason, Mike Dunford (his goatee is bigger in real life), our seed overlords and many many more. I learned I don't know how to pronounce allochthonous, not even close. Also, Steve Higgins is identifiable from …

2007-08-18 18:37  2-a-Days: UTEP and Vanderbilt
Vanderbilt Commodores Last year, Vanderbilt was usually hanging around but they just couldn't find ways to beat the better teams (with the exception of Georgia). How is that going to change for the Commodores THE OFFENSE: Vanderbilt is led by QB, Chris Nickson. He showed last year he definitely had the ability to make plays with his legs being the team's leading rusher last year. He can certainly make enough throws for defensive coordinators to lose some sleep. He's only a junior, so expect the …

2007-08-16 21:17  I Like Threes
I had to leave my shower goodies up for a few days -- they make for nice eye candy! But I did also have a good 33rd birthday. I like threes for some reason, so maybe this will be a lucky year. For my birthday, my mom, Lloyd and Lloyd's mom all came over and watched Elise while Chris and I went out for a movie and dinner. We really did try to get them not to come all the way out here to do that since they both just had surgery, but they insisted. Elise slept almost the entire time we were gone th …

2007-08-13 02:23  Oakland Raiders vs Arizona Cardinals: The Recap
I am finally recovered enough from the 7PM start to write the Oakland Raiders first preseason gamerecap. Whoever thought of a 7PM start time for a Raider game needs to have their head examined. That is just way too much time for us tailgaters!!! Before I get into the X's and O's and my observations I have to point out the game will be replayed on the NFL Network tonight at 11 ET and I am eagerly awaiting that. Now onto the scrimmage/game. I say it was a scrimmage/game because that is EXACTLY how …

2007-08-09 19:44  More Editorial PagesDump On House Farm Bill
My colleagues Mike Segner and Don Carr compiled a fresh batch to go with the first one we served. In the jump. Some of these editorials were penned by big city editors who, according to House Ag Committee Chairman Peterson, " have no clue about what s going on " and should stop writing about subsidy programs. œAs I said in the response to (an) editorial the other day: those of us in farm country don t know about the big city and we aren t about to tell them what to do. But these big-city editori …

2007-08-08 16:54  Mowery Resigns; Special Election to Come
Well District 97 opened up a little earlier then expected with Republican State Representative, and staunch Craddick butt kisser, Anna Mowery, officially resigning yesterday.   State Rep. Anna Mowery's resignation will likely mean that a special election for her seat will be added to the Nov. 6 ballot, which is currently dominated by constitutional amendments. Gov. Rick Perry has 20 days from Mowery's resignation to call an election, according to officials in his office and the Secretary of Stat …

[Update] The NRO issues a major update to this, I am adding it to the top. KEY UPDATE: Just exchanged e-mails with the reporter on this story, Brian Faler. He says the corporation is "trying to figure out ways to treat viruses used in warfare." Okay, that makes a lot more sense - just wish the original article had made that a little clearer. My apologies to readers. Yes, I wish it had been made clearer and it helps a little better in the understanding of "why" this particular pork was added, but …

2007-08-05 03:58  Now the House has its own Democrats For Undermining the Constitution and Kowtowing Eternally to Drun …
It seems my faith in the House stopping the Bush crime syndicate's shredding of the Constitution was misplaced. Little more than an hour ago, the House passed the FISA amendments by a 227-183 vote. I'm absolutely shocked ... stunned ... appalled. I would never have believed that the Democrats would roll over so massively. There are 41 members of the House's D-FUCKED caucus, joining their 16 traitorous colleagues in the Senate. Here are the House Dems who voted for the bill, with links to their h …

2007-07-27 14:01  Unfreakin believable...
Before we get started on anything football related, our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of Wake Forest basketball coach, Skip Prosser, who passed away suddenly yesterday of a massive heart attack. He was only 56 years old. A reader of the blog, Gary Parrish from CBS Sportsline, relives his last conversation with Coach Prosser from last week. Go check it out. Days 'til Season Kickoff : 36 Very interesting story yesterday. Last week I sent an e-mail to Doug Walker, Media Rela …

2007-07-26 14:52  Spirit of 1776
The House of Representatives has quite the sense of humor when it comes to commemorating our nation's founding. This year, they've decided to celebrate that great year by making 1,776 earmark requests for Defense appropriations. As such things tend to do, a spreadsheet of the requests reached me, so scroll down to view all 1,776 in their pork-laden glory. The first table summarizes the total number of earmarks requested by each member (congratulations Congressman Young --- you win!), and the sec …

2007-07-20 12:08  The Vault: Michigan vs. Seton Hall, 1989 (Part 2)
Here we are again with The Vault, taking a look at the second half of the 1989 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship game between Michigan and Seton Hall. You might be interested to know that you can order it from at NCAA On Demand or from Amazon. Halftime Michigan has held Seton Hall to 13 fewer points than their average and has forced them to shoot a whole lot from outside, where they haven't connected. 0:36:13 Terry Mills comes over the top with an emphatic block. The Seton Hall player never had …

2007-07-18 21:26  Leadership Day - Summary
[ cross-posted at the TechLearning blog ] On June 28, I invited bloggers and readers to participate in Leadership Day on July 4. Specifically, I asked participants of the blogosphere to write about effective school technology leadership: successes, challenges, reflections, needs, etc. A variety of folks participated in the conversation: Jeanette Johnson listed her Top Ten (Not So Good) Reasons Why Educational Leaders Don t Embrace Digital Technologies. Sylvia Martinez affirmed the importance of …

2007-07-15 17:49  Into the back issue box #32
Today ... the weirdest entry yet!  Well, okay, not the weirdest, but it certainly has a gigantic lack of information right in the middle of it, which is kind of weird. Let's see ... the rules of these posts are, as always, just a click away! Web of Spider-Man #22 ("Profit of Doom").  Published by Marvel, January 1987.                         I have no idea who wrote this comic.  I have no idea who drew this comic.  There is nothing in this comic to indicate who wrote, drew, lettered, colored, or …
