2007-10-30 01:34  Work, Pray, Love
Long ago I learned that C. S. Lewis personal motto was laborare est orare, or to work is to pray. Recently I learned his motto s source. The original is from St. Benedict, who said, " Orare est laborare, laborare est orare " ("To pray is to work, to work is to pray"). Before I knew the first half of the original quote, I thought of Lewis motto only in terms of work being like prayer. Now I understand the connection is much deeper. For the Christian who thinks of them properly, work and pr …

2007-10-27 01:29  This Is the Air I Breathe
The view from my window these last few days has been ugly. I live directly in the smoke plume of one of the wildfires ravaging Southern California. Ash falls from the sky day and night; the rising sun is a dim red ball I can stare straight at without blinking; my eyes water and my nose burns as the air conspires to choke me, and the mid-day light has a sickly yellow cast that makes me feel like I m on another planet, maybe Mars. But as much as I wish this wasn t my home, it is. Yesterday I went …

2007-10-24 22:36  What Terri Wrote
Terri Blackstock does not blog, but recently I saw a copy of an important email she sent to several friends, and asked if she would offer something similar here. To my delight, she graciously agreed. Terri is always doing something gracious. For example, although we had never met, soon after the publication of my first novel she took time out of a busy book tour schedule to have dinner with my wife and me, along with my mother who was a big fan. I will never forget the encouragement Terri offere …

2007-10-22 21:29  Godless Educrats
The Atlantic's 150th Anniversary issue arrived at my house last week, and I've been leafing through the selection of short essays at the front about "The Future of the American Idea." The quality varies a lot--Edward O. Wilson's 400 words are a model of economy and clarity, the policiticians, not so much. One of the contributors is Tim LaHaye, minister and author of the best-selling "Left Behind" series. Given the chance to say anything he wanted about religion and America, he decided to focus h …

По следам виклопедического поста zhenyach :Keats realized that if he could make an educated guess as to where God fit on the tree of life -- based on the field descriptions of widely noted observers such as Moses and Jesus and Mohammed -- he could use a method of genetic engineering called continuous in vitro evolution to mutate other species into God. If you want to file this under a mocking Stereogum-like: "Hey, Movie Stars Like Music Too!" we won't blame you (maybe file it under: light and fluffy for Friday). But for better or worse, this is what we do. Entertainment Weekly has an interview with " Control" actress Samantha Morton ("Morvern Callar," "In America") and she reveals in the piece that her taste is not unlike the enthusiasts at Pitchfork or Stereogum. The actress said when preparing for roles she'll listen to certain music to help …

2007-10-18 19:29  Agape, Even If By Force
It was uncomfortable, but I read Francis Schaeffer s A Christian Manifesto yesterday. If you have not read this book, I strongly recommend that you get a copy and do so right away. We re talking about a pillar of the Christian intellectual community, who wrote statements like this: since tyranny is satanic, not to resist it is to resist God. And this: at a certain point there is not only the right, but the duty, to disobey the state. These are startling words from a conservative evangeli …

2007-10-18 16:41  John Wesley on 2 Peter 1:3-11
I wanted to post John Wesley's notes on this passage as I'm studying it and presenting some devotional talks on it for the Running Toward the Goal podcast (first one here ). I was started down the path of studying this passage by Laura Curtis's post on Pursuing Holiness which is well worth reading. John Wesley's notes are interpolated in the KJV of the passage, to fit the language style. I took both the KJV text and Wesley's notes from e-Sword, a wonderful, completely free Bible software package …

2007-10-18 15:48  reverence
As Mormon children we are taught a lot about reverence. In Mo parlance reverence doesn't have anything to do with respect or awe, it's about sitting quietly in your seat with your arms folded across your lap (and I'm not at all exaggerating about the posture) for the 3-hour block of meetings each Sunday. As children we are repeatedly told this and every week in the children's Primary meeting there are 'reverence songs' to underscore these ideas. I haven't heard the word reverence discussed in Qu …

2007-10-17 22:41  Islam Versus Judaism and Christianity: some observations
I did some research and found this to best one of the best answers to the old moral equivalency argument that we know so well around here. by Ariel Natan Pasko (found at http://www.sullivan-county.com/index.htm) The Islamic barbarians, or Isalmo-fascists, or whatever you call them, are running rampant in the world. 2007-10-17 04:28  The Gospel of Both/And, Not Either/Or
by the Rev. Matthew Dutton-Gillett [Editor's Note: Matthew Dutton-Gillett has previously written for The Episcopal Majority here and here. This essay was accepted for publication on October 11.] The other day, I heard an interview with an Episcopalian who was of draft age during World War II. He told some of his story about registering as a conscientious objector. He said that as he thought about Jesus, he simply could not imagine Jesus wearing the uniform of an American soldier or of any soldie …

In a comment on an earlier post of mine discussing the non-validity of testaments from personal experience, Mark (whose blog features some of the best entertainment reviews you'll find I highly recommend his writings if you want to delve into how theatre works), posted: Of course, as any smart Christian will tell you, feelings are virtually meaningless when it comes to God and religion. If Christians depended on their feelings for faith, every one of them would probably be atheist. Spiritual fee …

2007-10-16 19:19  Sin and Sunday Morning
Joel Osteen was interviewed by Byron Pitts on 60 Minutes this past Sunday. I didn't see the program but was able to watch it at CBS News Online. I recognize that the media can distort what someone actually says. But taken at face value, the interview was concerning. Here's one portion from the transcript: "You said 'I like to see myself as a life coach, a motivator to help them experience the life of God that God has for them. People don t like to be beat down and told 'You ve done wrong.' What …

2007-10-16 16:00  The Original Tax on Income
I was thinking the other day, as the calendar rolled over to October, that it was about that time ... time to think about getting together the odds and ends of records - income and expenses - that are necessary to file my taxes. As a Christian, I'm sorry to use such base language in what is usually a fairly family friendly blog but, even in polite or mixed company, it is still whispered now and then, "Taxes ..." If you listen carefully, you can even hear the drawn out "S", giving the word a slig …

2007-10-16 13:48  Crime & Punishment:Crime Didn't Pay in Ancient Egypt
By Jean Adams It didn't pay to be convicted of a crime in ancient Egypt. A criminal had to think it was worth the risk not to stay on the straight and narrow. If officialdom didn't get you and torture you, then the gods would. And their justice was far harsher than any punishment people could mete out. When someone died and went west (a term we still use today) to join the gods, their heart would be weighed against Ma'at's feather on the scales of justice. Ma'at was the goddess of truth and just …

2007-10-16 13:44  "Saved By Hope"
So, the buzz didn't wash out... and not that that's a bad thing. Contrary to prior reports that B16's next encyclical would be on development, as intimated in recent days in the Italian press, appearances are that the topic is, indeed, hope -- and the draft is completed... ...yet social, it seems, will make three. In his Letter from Rome in last Friday's edition of The Tablet (available for free this week), Robert Mickens wrote that "sources at the Vatican confirmed" to him that the buzz saying …
