By U Gambira, the pseudonym of a leader of the All-Burma Monks Alliance, which spearheaded nationwide protests in September. Wanted by Burma's military junta, he is living in hiding as he continues the monks' campaign (THE WASHINGTON POST, 04/11/07): In August, the Burmese people began to write a new chapter in their determination to find peace and freedom. Burmese monks peacefully protested to bring change to our long-suffering country. As we marched, hundreds of thousands of Burmese and our et …

2007-10-27 07:52  Vatican City
In den nächsten Tagen werde ich etwas sparsamer, wenn überhaupt, schreiben, da eine Menge Arbeit (zum Broterwerb) meine Zeit beansprucht. Zum Beispiel Übersetzungen wie diese: For almost 1000 years (324-1309) the Popes lived at the Lateran Palace on the Caelian Hill in the east of Rome. Only because the Lateran building was out of repair on their return from 68 years in Avignon have they since 1377 lived in the Vatican or, for a while, at the Quirinal, now the residence of the president of Italy …

Further to the previous post here s an excellent description of how the Victoria needle exchange has wrecked a neighbourhood: For those of us who observe the devastation of a neighbourhood in the name of a social experiment, resentment is focused not on the unfortunates, but on those who planned and implemented this disaster, including our mayor and council. This on a day that started with me scooping diarrhea embedded with needles off my front steps. Used needles, human feces, discarded underwe …

2007-10-18 15:52  Drinking Liberally: Promises, Promises
It's mid-October, and the air is damp with promises of autumn colors and a deluge of turistas to watch them. Other promises are floating through the formerly therapeutic air of Asheville, promises of the political variety. Dwight Butner, Jan Davis, and Bill Russell - the NC Realtors PAC and Republican supported candidates - are promising something they call "balance" when considering what sorts of development ought to take place in the city. This means that they'd like Big Development to have at …

"All politics is local". Another excerpt from the recommended article: So let s pose this question. 2007-10-17 15:18  New cardinals
A bit of a surprise was Abp. Daniel DiNardo, 58, who for six years worked at the Vatican's Congregation for Bishops, where he worked for Cardinal Rigali. He was named archbishop last year. There are several other U.S. archdioceses that usually have cardinals leading them, including Washington and Baltimore, but the pope did not elevate their archbishops. Catholic numbers have been rising steadily especially in border states, due to the influx of legal and especially illegal aliens. (Not that Mex …
