2007-10-08 03:17  Ohio high court to hear sex offender retroactivity case this week
T his Wednesday (October 10, 2007), the eyes of America's "sex offender stakeholder community" will be turned to the Ohio Supreme Court, when it hears oral argument in the case of Francis Hyle, Green Township Law Director, et al. v. Gerry R. Porter, Jr. (Case No. 2006-2187, pleadings and orders ). The Porter case, on appeal from the 1st District Court of Appeals in Cincinnati ( Hyle v. Porter, 170 Ohio App.3d 710, 2006-Ohio-5454), will decide whether Ohio's residency restrictions on sex offender …

2007-09-26 17:07  TR and the 1902 Coal Strike
Strikes are on my mind (looks like the nationwide GM strike (first in over 30 years) ended today after less than a week), so I thought discussing TR's involvement in the 1902 anthracite coal strike was appropriate. In October of 1902, TR faced a possible coal famine and so took unprecedented action to summon the leaders to him. From the DOL's site we learn how unprecedented this was: This meeting marked the turn of the U.S. Government from strikebreaker to peacemaker in industrial disputes. In t …

2007-09-25 16:10  The Italian Antiquities Trial - a Brief Review
D uring the summer of 2005, a trial began in Italy with the goal of deciding the guilt or innocence of Marion True along with Robert Hecht, Jr in conspiracy to traffic in illegal antiquities. The trial is still underway in Rome and has certainly fulfilled the 2 year prediction some gave. The result is that several museums have already returned antiquities of illicit origin to their countries of origin, pariticuarly Italy and Greece. True, the former curator of the J. Paul Getty Museum, and Hecht …

JACK ABRAMOFF From Wikipedia: Abramoff pleaded guilty on January 3, 2006, to three criminal felony counts in a Washington, D.C., federal court related to the defrauding of American Indian tribes and corruption of public officials. The following day he pleaded guilty to two criminal felony counts in a separate federal court, in Miami, related to his fraudulent dealings with SunCruz Casinos. 2007-09-02 00:00  DOFASCO buys Wabush Mines
In the latest twist of the tale, DOFASCO will buy out Wabush Mines, thus shutting Consolidated Thompson (CT) out of the equation .Quebec Cartier considered buying the mine once. Consolidated Thompson considered it in late 2006, then rejected it .Then Stelco sold its shares or at least started to sell them to CT, until this DOFASCO decision. The other bit owned by Cleveland-Cliffs was also supposed to go to CT. Now DOFASCO, owned by a Belgian concern with international interests, will exercise it …

2007-08-30 03:45  Mailstrom
Six pages of questions I've collected since the Mail Call was made. I won't waste your time (or mine) with any fancy anecdote or cute lyrics. Let's get at it.... Darren Alan, After watching the Knicks intently the past couple seasons, I am not convinced that this year's team will be able to fix some awful habits. Specifically, the "go down by 25 in the 1st half, only to rally in the 3rd/4th quarter and lose in the end." I supported the Z-Bo acquisition and the rooks look promising, but why shoul …

2007-08-29 13:00  Should the Cowboys have taken Quinn
I don't believe they should have, but Gregg Easterbrook thinks so At Texas Stadium, they'll be watching the scoreboard and rooting for the Browns to lose. Dallas holds Cleveland's first-round choice in the 2008 draft. "Play Quinn! Play Quinn!" the Cowboys' faithful will chant, considering that starting rookie QB Brady Quinn might brighten Cleveland's long-term prospects but also lead to another cellar-dweller season for the Browns in 2007. Why do the Cowboys hold Cleveland's 2008 first choice Be …
