2007-11-06 12:50 Blue Plate Special
It was another one of those Uni Watch red-alert moments last night, as about a dozen readers e-mailed me all at once and another half-dozen or so posted all at once in the comments section. The cause Jason Strudwick of the Rangers got in a fight and his nameplate came loose during the fisticuffs, revealing some nasty-looking adhesive residue on the underside. All of which is very entertaining. But here's my question: Since when have the Rangers been using nameplates I always thought they used di …

2007-09-01 22:02 5 Multiple Role Movie Masters
There are not many actors that can truly pull off playing more than one part in a single movie (hence this being a top 5 and not a top 10 list). It can be a scene killer and movie deal breaker if it s not a convincing second character, or in some cases 3rd or 4th or 15th character (see # 3 on the list). In making this list I wanted to avoid when actors play their twin brothers or sisters (or other family members for that matter but that rule was meant to be broken) or when they are clones, robot …

2007-08-31 21:47 Confessions of a White Hat Cube Farmer
A fine piece of work on the Ohio charter school fraud from Cleveland Scene News. Helloooooo, Governor Strickland. Go Amy Rankin--and thanks for Education at its worst : Suddenly, six groomed businessmen, cologned with importance, stroll in behind an absolute giant of a man, clad today in grandpa sweater and signature 10-gallon white cowboy hat. The giant approaches tiny me. I already know who he is: Mister David Brennan. I don't know whether to sit or stand. I stand. "Amy, nice to meet you," boo …

2007-08-31 17:05 Cleveland - Music - Do You Tek-Know
Cleveland - Music - Do You Tek-Know An article in this week's Scene magazine about Paul and his Tek-Know crew. As the founder of Tek-Know - a local cabal of producers, DJs, and promoters, who worship at the altar of underground techno - Swetz incessantly dreams up schemes to sell obscure, uncompromising sounds to fellow Clevelanders. Swetz is, in a way, the Rust Belts Tony Wilson. I don't know about being the "Rust Belt's Tony Wilson," but he's definitely thrown some kickin' parties over the yea …

2007-08-31 00:00 The Old Real World Move, Eh: Chefs blame Cleveland portrayal on editing
Michael Ruhlman, backtracking in black and white. Since the Travel Channel aired No Reservations: Cleveland on Monday, many locals have aired their discontent for the places that Anthony Bourdain did and didn't visit. Even Scene's own Jared Klaus had a few issues of his own, with which I'd have to concur. Skyline Chilli WTF However, Bourdain did make up for his Cincinnati-inspired grievance by visiting Hot Sauce Williams with Cleveland's culinary star, Mike Symon. But what most critical viewers …

2007-08-30 03:45 Mailstrom
Six pages of questions I've collected since the Mail Call was made. I won't waste your time (or mine) with any fancy anecdote or cute lyrics. Let's get at it.... Darren Alan, After watching the Knicks intently the past couple seasons, I am not convinced that this year's team will be able to fix some awful habits. Specifically, the "go down by 25 in the 1st half, only to rally in the 3rd/4th quarter and lose in the end." I supported the Z-Bo acquisition and the rooks look promising, but why shoul …

2007-08-29 15:06 The Long and Winding Road: Tim Couch
Note: Prepare for a completely biased account regarding my deep love and affection for the one, Tim Couch. Let s start this off with my first memories of the legend. 1999. The Browns get a new team after Art Modell stripped Cleveland of their beloved just three years prior. I m 13 years old. Of course I m going to love whoever they draft in the first round. Tim Couch, quarterback out of the University of Kentucky it is. I have two, count em, TWO Couch jerseys in my closet to this day. I already …

2007-08-28 14:18 How I know I'm strong
Far be it from me to disabuse people of the tears they shed on the first full-day of Kindergarten. As I exited my children's elementary school today, coincidentally with numerous parents of five and six year olds (and a tiny number of "young fives" who have until Sept. 30 to stop being four), several friends of mine looked anxious, with that expression that makes you ask, "Are you okay "To which every single one of them (in truth, three) replied, "Oh, yeah. It's the first day of Kindergarten." F …

2007-08-23 08:38 Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
Kind of a messy day yesterday for those watching the V Fest lineup leaderboard yesterday, which is to say - me. Once again, no official announcement was forthcoming about who was playing, let alone when, but there were some updates to the official Facebook group and then updates to those updates as the day went on. Final boxscore as of now for day one Paulo Nutini still on, k-os added then removed, The Coral removed, Hayley Sales and The Most Serene Republic added. So by any measure a net subtra …

2007-08-23 02:14 Exposure Cleveland
It is good to see the Exposure Cleveland group getting some pub in Cleveland Scene Magazine ... Exposure Cleveland -- It's hard out there for a photographer. Images are everywhere, and standing out is difficult. This makes the accomplishments of certain artists in this large, diverse exhibit all the more notable. Several of the photogs -- who all belong to a year-old community called Exposure Cleveland, which was formed through the photo-sharing website Flickr -- manage to offer something truly …

OK, I didn't watch the entire week, I just watched the kick-off episode "Ocean of Fear," because it was about an event in naval history that has horrified and fascinated me since. .. well, since I saw Jaws for the first time. 2007-08-17 15:02 Catbird Records, News, Reviews, New Moviola Video
Praise continues to roll in (at a leisurely pace, naturally) for Moviola's Dead Knowledge, this time from Cleveland Scene's Justin Farrar, who says that: ... Dead Knowledge unfolds as if Moviola intentionally set out to capture our country's musiial experience in its entirety. There's colonial folk, drunken Tex-Mex, field spirituals, punchy R&B, and some of the best West Coast rock since Poco dropped its Crazy Eyes LP back in '74. Whoa. I mean, come on, how often do you see a Poco reference And …

Check out this week's feature/cover story in Cleveland Scene by Lisa Rab. Why Are You Still Paying Him Utilities Director Julius Ciaccia has been at the center of corruption scandals for 15 years. Interesting and in-depth article on the culture at the Water Department and Utilities. My insider sources have told me that there is more than a grain of truth to Lisa's story. CEP
