2007-10-19 06:30 Medicaid changing in S.C.
South Carolina's $5 billion Medicaid program is changing to a managed-care system, and for the first time, 1 million recipients soon will have to choose a health plan. Making a choice first are Midlands residents. Over the next 18 months, Medicaid recipients across the state will have to decide on a health insurance plan offered by one of several managed care organizations or through what is called a medical home network. Once signed on, Medicaid recipients will use their plans to meet all cover …

2007-10-18 11:00 Profiling and Railroading: The FBI and Richard Jewell
Why bother with investigating and gathering evidence, when you can just call reporters and railroad some poor sap Part II of a series. (In Part I, œ Remembering Richard Jewell, I wrote of the terrorist bombing, which killed one person directly and wounded 111, at the Atlanta Olympics in the wee hours of July 27, 1996. Via excerpted 911 transcripts, I showed the criminal incompetence and cowardice of the Atlanta Police Department. And via other writers work, I recounted the vindictive campaign …

Marcie tagged me for the 7 Things You Don't Know About Me meme, so here I go! First, it might seem strange to some that I'm being tagged by a woman who is an adoptive mom. Don't adoption & abortion go against each other Nope. Being a reproductive justice activist (IOW very pro-choice), I firmly believe in adoption. But the decision is up to each woman. Marcie knows it better than I, as she is involved in the adoption community more than me, that choice plays a huge part in adoption. " I know the …

2007-10-17 00:31 Estrogen Metabolite Index and Breast Cancer: What We Need To Know
Apart from timely mammography for breast abnormality evaluation, a simple urine test on Estrogen Metabolite Index (EMI) can help in determining whether one is at risk for developing breast cancer. Are you concerned whether your intake of Oral Contraceptive Pills or Hormone Replacement Therapy may put you at risk The following bit of information may answer some of those gnawing questions. From Estrogen Carcinogenesis in Breast Cancer by James D. Yager, Ph.D., and Nancy E. Davidson, M.D., New Engl …

2007-10-16 22:02 A harsh public response to a police killing
Vandals in Amsterdam attacked a police station to protest the police killing of a man with mental illness. But unlike some other cases in the U.S., in which people with mental illnesses are killed prematurely by police who are ill-trained for the interaction, in this case the homicide sounds, at the very least, understandable from the police officer's point of view. Bilal B. appeared at a police station, jumped over a desk, and immediately began stabbing the on-duty female police officer. She ra …

2007-10-16 18:03 Dealing with a hard decision
We spent the night Sunday night at the Emergency Vets with our 8 year old male poodle pup. $200 and many hours later, it was determined that he has a kidney stone. He stayed overnight and we picked him up early Monday morning and took him to our regular vet. Several X-rays, hours later, and $100 more, he still has a kidney stone that has not budged. The vet wanted to wait it out and hope he could pass it. He said surgery was the last option because the dog already had congestive heart failure an …

2007-10-15 22:52 The Case Against Bobby Jindal
In less than a week, Louisianans will vote on who is best qualified to lead our State for the next four years. We face a monumental decision. This election does not simply represent a change in leadership; it also marks the first time Louisianans have had to make a decision about their state's leadership since the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. In her new book The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism, author Naomi Klein reveals a fascinating relationship between the natur …

2007-10-15 17:43 Greatest Hits: When Pro-Life Policies Dominate
I was going through our archives and stumbled across this post, which I think is pretty relevant given recent discussions. I would say "enjoy," but... ________________________ When Pro-Life Policies Dominate One columnist at the Demoines Register takes a look at Ethiopia, where abortion is illegal and 30 percent of maternal deaths result from botched illegal procedures. In almost the entire continent, ending a pregnancy without some extenuating circumstances is illegal. Ethiopia recently liberal …

OK. It's time to talk of many things: Of shoes and ships and sealing wax and cabbages and kings and why Diana is in such a distracted state and whether pigs have wings.... Some of you know most of this but not all of it, as the last bit we just found out, so there's something for everyone. To say that my week got worse (and surreal) would be an understatement, particularly when you are sitting in a clinic for homeless and street-workers and your "last resort" GP doctor suddenly reveals that he has a œpersonal conflict with people who take birth control. Okay....you are at an inner city clinic, you treat sex workers but you won t give birth control or treat people who take it At times like this I like to focus on the good things, which was Monday s ride through the autumn foliage …

A group in Michigan has filed papers to create a ballot initiative committee to allow the killing human embryos for research in Michigan. The group says it is still uncertain if they will attempt a campaign or not. Reporter Kim Kozlowski lazily promotes the false claim that embryonic stem cell research is banned in Michigan. State Rep. Andy Meisner, D-Ferndale, is seeking a hearing this month on three bills that would loosen Michigan's law banning embryonic stem cell research, regarded as among …

2007-10-12 13:00 Big-Altie Gags the Truth, or tries to
Isn't it funny how you almost always hear, in any discussions from proponents of various therapies for which no evidence of effectiveness exists, that the 'allopathic' practitioners, or big-pharma or the establishment, are suppressing the truth, trying to gag them, deluding the people. Well, here's evidence of exactly this sort of thing, only it isn't big-pharma doing the suppression, it's the Society of Homeopaths. They have threatened the writer of the Quackometer blog, with legal action, if h …

"I don't think she's well," said the woman with the walker by the door and we all looked up. I from my newspaper, Joe from the crossword puzzle. It seemed everyone had brought things to distract themselves from the wait. All eyes fell on a very elderly woman, holding on to her chest, trying but unable to speak. Doors of offices flew open at some invisible call and soon she was surrounded by health care professionals asking questions about mediations and nitroglycerin. The crisis seemed averted w …

Comrade Weiss contemplates the "macabre allure" of that queen of crazy, evil bitches, that cabaret act gone awry, that drag queen impersonating a fascist, the anti-matter of sensationalism herself, Anne Coulter: "She could elope with John Walker Lindh in Vegas and bomb an abortion clinic on the way home and the public outrage would only ever register as the idiom of the brain-dead sitcom: That's our Ann!" Which see . And which see .
