Zen Buddhism: Selected Writings. D.T. Suzuki. Doubleday. Challenged at the Plymouth-Canton school sys …

By Jason Webb MADRID, Oct 25 (Reuters) - The Catholic Church is preparing to beatify 498 of its members killed during the Spanish Civil War, putting them on the path to possible sainthood but reviving memories of a conflict that still divides Spain. Most of those to be honoured at Sunday's ceremony in Rome, the biggest mass beatification ever and to be attended by thousands of Spanish pilgrims, were priests or nuns killed by left-wing militias at the outbreak of the 1936-39 war. Many Catholic cl …

2007-10-26 18:48 Canada doesn't need a Star Chamber
On Monday, the federal government tabled its amendments to Canada's national security immigration law. There were two options in drafting this bill: Ottawa could have learned from the experience of other countries most notably the United Kingdom and created a system that avoided problems in those jurisdictions. Or it could table a minimalist proposal that risks repeating those problems here in Canada. The government chose option two. In response to the Supreme Court's Charkaoui decision in Febru …

2007-10-24 15:05 A Chance to Dream
The Senate has a chance today to pluck a small gem from the ashes of the immigration debate. A critical procedural vote is scheduled on the Dream Act, a bill to open opportunities for college and military service to the children of undocumented immigrants. Roughly 65,000 children graduate each year from high school into a constrained future because they cannot work legally or qualify for most college aid. These are the overlooked bystanders to the ferocious bickering over immigration. They did n …

2007-10-24 15:00 Jim Breuer Explains How To Drink
I like stand-up comedy. Without a doubt one of the most hilarious things I've seen was Robin Williams dvd " Live on Broadway ". I've seen that thing somewhere around four or five times and the thing never gets boring. Pretty much anyone who's seen it have laughed until they had problem breathing. This is a good score, since this type of comedy normally have to be experienced as part of an audience. Laughing ones ass of at a recording of it is a good benchmark. I've never known who Jim Breuer was …

Pakistan ˜s shifting power In this post as Azadnevis (Freelancer) accepts guest writer in his blog, I am going to open an argument about Pakistan's political situation right now and what's happening there. You may ask why Pakistan I say some very interesting political lobbing is happening between enemies in Pakistan but surprisingly the main stream media have not had enough coverage about it. The story started on 27th of July when Benazir Bhutto the former prime minister met General Pervez Musha …

2007-10-22 23:34 New security certificate law to be unveiled today
The federal government is expected to propose a new national security certificate law today that permits the use of secret intelligence, but allows a special court advocate to challenge its validity. The Supreme Court of Canada in February struck down the controversial immigration law that gives the government power to deport non-citizens deemed national security risks. The secrecy of the process violated the constitutional right to fair trial, the high court wrote in a unanimous ruling. Parliam …

2007-10-22 21:59 It's really hard to believe
that the hounding of Dr.Watson is triggered not by any actual words of his, but by a newspaper "report" -- with some words in quotation marks, others not, within all controversial sentences, so that his intended meaning remains extremely far from clear, even if (and this is a huge if) all quoted words are indeed exact quotations. Disgusting, really.

2007-10-22 13:25 Iran s power struggle intensifies
By Simon Tisdall (THE GUARDIAN, 22/10/07): Saeed Jalili, who replaced Ali Larijani as Iran's top nuclear negotiator at the weekend, is a man of strong moral views who believes spiritual values must inform political actions. His absolute conviction of the rightness of Iran's cause, and his loyalty to his old friend Iran's hardline president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, may make him an awkward interlocutor when talks with the EU on the nuclear dossier resume in Rome tomorrow. In a lengthy interview condu …

"Cheney's Law", un documental del programa Frontline, de PBS. For three decades Vice President Dick Cheney conducted a secretive, behind-closed-doors campaign to give the president virtually unlimited wartime power. Finally, in the aftermath of 9/11, the Justice Department and the White House made a number of controversial legal decisions. Orchestrated by Cheney and his lawyer David Addington, the department interpreted executive power in an expansive and extraordinary way, granting President Ge …

2007-10-20 23:41 Naomi Wolf Cries Fascism
According to Naomi Wolf, the Bush Administration has already initiated all 10 steps necessary to bring fascism to the United States. One of my pet peeves with the Left is the tendency, almost by default, to liken the Bush Administration to Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. It is a significant reason I could no longer bring myself to associate with the Left. Naomi Wolf is a textbook case of this tendency. Last month, Wolf released her sixth book, The End of America: A Letter of Warning to a Young Patri …

2007-10-20 17:47 Neandertalerne kunne kanskje snakke
A DNA analysis shows Neanderthals share with humans two key changes in the FOXP2 gene known to be involved in speech, raising the possibility the species possessed some prerequisites for langua …

2007-10-19 21:37 Pakistan holds its breath
By Simon Tisdall (THE GUARDIAN, 19/10/07): Generally speaking, there is no upside to a suicide bombing, especially one as pitiless, as treacherous, and as costly of human life as that which hit home in Karachi yesterday. The slaughter came at the very moment when hope of a better, more prosperous and more democratic future had at last returned to the hearts of millions of impoverished, disillusioned and effectively disenfranchised Pakistanis. But if, as now seems likely, the mass murder pushes P …

2007-10-19 18:51 Curran speech spotlights reforms of Pope John XXIII
When Charles Curran gave talks at Catholic universities 25 years ago, newspaper headlines the following day would read, "Radical priest disappoints." But Curran got a very different reaction Thursday night during his talk, "The Life and Legacy of Pope John XXIII" at St. Edward's University. Curran is best known for reaffirming the need for a ban on artificial contraception and questioning the Catholic Church's authority on teaching moral issues, including premarital sex, abortion and homosexuali …

2007-10-18 10:50 A GOP Formula For Victory In 2008
Going into the 2008 election cycle, the biggest political "enemy" Republican candidates face is the public perception of "business as usual." Despite the gloomy prognostications of Hillary's inevitability as the next heir to the White House, she is no more "invincible" as a candidate than was her husband. And here a reality check is in order. Although the press would have us all believe that Bill Clinton was and is universally adored, attaining a status somewhere between that of a rock star and …

2007-10-18 09:52 Bush Still Relevant
WaPo columnist Dan Froomkin focused on this exchange in a Bush press conference yesterday: Asked how he found himself vetoing a children's health insurance bill that had passed Congress with bipartisan support, Bush insisted that using a veto is "one way to ensure I am relevant." When a reporter followed up and asked Bush if he felt he was losing leverage and relevance, Bush replied: "I've never felt more engaged and more capable of getting the American people to realize there's a lot of unfinis …
