2007-10-24 17:17 Return of the Muslim other
By Soumaya Ghannoushi, director of research at IslamExpo (THE GUARDIAN, 24/10/07): In a few days time a cluster of far-right groups under the name the Stop the Islamisation of Europe alliance will hold rallies in London, Copenhagen and Marseilles to demand an end to what they call "the overt and covert expansion of Islam in Europe". Although the events are likely to attract no more than a handful of protesters, their message resonates widely. On Saturday the rightwing People's party, notorious f …

[ From Peter K. 2007-10-04 07:31 Cosmic rays don t die so easily
Last week, a Norwegian official-looking - and in my view - climatesceptic website praised Eigil Friis-Christensen from the Danish space center (featuring in the Great Global Warming Swindle ) and hailed him for having given the best speech ever in the annual Birkeland seminar organized by Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (NASL). There were rumours of controversy behind the scene before the seminar, as the NASL is regarded as a prestigious body in Norway. Furthermore, Svensmark and Friis- …

2007-10-03 09:53 Lighten Up
My last post about the terminally hip fixie crowd was an attempt at humor. If a person tells a joke then has to explain it, it is not funny. If a certain reader of my last post can t tell it is satire without me labeling as such, then maybe you should get to know my style of writing before rushing to judgment. If you think I am prejudiced against this or that cycling faction you are wrong, and the problem is not mine, but your inability to laugh at yourself. There are people in this world who wo …

2007-09-05 14:22 Using the Magic of Magnets to Cool Refrigerators
Scientists at the Technical University of Denmark are on the path to build a fridge that uses magnets to cool itself. The Copenhagen Post writes that "The new method uses opposing magnetic fields to increase the temperature of the materials employed. The heat energy is transported through a non-volatile fluid, such as water, and then thermodynamically reversed to a cold temperature." Sounds like witchcraft to me! However, apparently it's 60% more efficient than the usual electricity-hogging refr …

"Mascalzone Latino" toppar resultatlistan efter 8 Race. Foto: Rolex/Carlo Borlenghi Batten down the hatches August 31, 2007 The cold and rainy weather continued but with it, finally, some good breeze for the third day of racing in the Rolex Farr 40 World Championship off Copenhagen. With more than enough wind, the race committee was able to get off three races, though postponing a few starts to contend with the shifting breeze and squalls that came through the race area. Eight races have been sa …

Apartment Therapy gives us a little hotel room porn, with this post on Hotel Fox in Copenhagen. 2007-08-29 18:52 Tuff dag på kontoret
Idag drog Farr 40 VM igång i Köpenhamn. Foto: Rolex/Carlo Borlenghi Foto: Rolex/Carlo Borlenghi Foto: Rolex/Carlo Borlenghi Tough day at the office August 29, 2007 It was a tough day for tacticians on the Oresund Strait on day one of the Rolex Farr 40 World Championship. With the northwesterly breeze shifting steadily, and the pressure up and down throughout the day, fortunes were won and lost throughout the day. The race committee ran three races - all windward/leewards, comprising four 2.2 mil …

2007-08-27 08:16 Denmark: Hizb ut-Tahrir's annual conference
Hizb ut-Tahrir in Denmark gathered Sunday for the movement's six-hour annual conference. The conference caused calls from politicians to ban the movement, mainly from the Danish Social Liberal Party (Radikale) and the Danish People's Party. Fadi Addullatif, the movement's spokesperson, said in response that Denmark is becoming a dictatorship, just like those Denmark criticizes in the Middle East. He said such developments blur the difference between the dictatorships and the European governmen …

2007-08-25 15:59 The Exception
Book/daddy Jerome Weeks posted a review of The Exception, a book about genocide: A philosophical thriller, The Exception considers the question who among us could commit atrocities, and sets it not among soldiers or sadists but the staff in a Copenhagen think tank devoted to studying genocide. In other words, take the most humanitarian, high-minded Westerners around - people like us, you know, the best people - and given the right circumstances, circumstances that needn't even be that extreme, w …

so lj, you won't believe what happened at work yesterday. So, I had an early shift at the bakery - it's not my shift, for whatever reason, I usually don't work Saturdays. we really need about 8 girls, right now we have 6 so we're all helping out whenever. The shift I took had actually been tossed around a lot, and I was basically the only one who was able to take it. So it was supposed to be me and this girl Kristine, who is Annoying Chick's friend, but she's been pretty cool whenever I've worke …

2007-08-19 17:45 Stories of Life: Speaking Dutch
Last week the city of Copenhagen announced it will have all 5-year-olds do a language exam, to check their language skills. This brought the Danish People's Party to suggest that immigrant parents, for example those speaking Arabic, Urdu or Turkish, be encouraged by both the municipality and teachers to speak Danish at home. Their suggestion was rejected by other politicians. It is of course not only immigrant children who may have problems. A recent news report reported that even ethnic Danish …

2007-08-18 06:14 Dodos not quite extinct
I've built up a big pile of clips while dealing with the Big Canadian Issues of the Day. Let's start thinning it out. Sheldon Stern reports for the History News Network that more and more African politicians and educators are calling for an honest appraisal of Africa's role in making the intercontinental slave trade possible. In some cases this has involved a strange twist on "white guilt": i.e., contemporary Africans from poor countries apologizing for crimes against the ancestors of present-da …
