2007-11-01 10:09 BBC -- global news medium number 1
A month ago, eJour editor Helle Nissen Kruuse asked members of her LinkedIn network to "choose just ONE general, all round online news service". The results are in, and the BBC won easily -- with 48 of the 98 votes the good old Beeb was way ahead of the competitors. Helle quotes lots of the participants in English in the otherwise Danish language story. (The BBC was this blogger's choice as well, though the idea of choosing ONE medium appears almost archaic already.)

2007-10-22 23:01 Lars Hedegaard: The Growth of Islam in Denmark and the Future of Secularism
og The Resilience of the Commoners In view of the importance justifiably attributed to the growing presence of Islam in Denmark - of which the 2005 Mohamed cartoon crisis is but one example - surprisingly little is known about the country's Muslim population sociologically, although considerably more information has been produced in the wake of the crisis. Characteristically, newspapers, private researchers and research institutions and private newsletters have produced the knowledge we do hav …

2007-10-20 12:49 Tourism & Web 2.0: Improve your Web 1.0 first
Never have I enjoyed a job as much as teaching "Web publishing" at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences. The more I teach how to write for the (tourism) Web, the more I realize that most tourism websites are really bad. Yes, I confess, this has been more of a surprise that I had expected. I have seen: awful writing, broken links, poor readability, bad navigation and most often no content scope nor real object. I cannot believe the poor status of writing for the web. Good online copy is im …

2007-10-16 18:42 Al Gore s Pulp Fiction
Guest Commentary by Edward Cline: As years go by the idea of Nobel Prizes for peace and literature becomes more and more lunatic. The criteria by which literature is measured and recognized by the Norwegian Nobel Committee remain unfathomable to an outside but critical observer. This year the Prize for literature went to Doris Lessing, a British author who wrote stories with ever-in-vogue feminist themes. But the individuals who screen nominees and award the Prizes for literature could just as w …

2007-10-14 18:10 Don t Stop The Pop finally decides it likes Kylie and her 2 Hearts
The moment Kylie started recording her tenth studio album the internet has been ablaze with rumours, tears and giggles about the project. After the long wait, the web is pampered with opinions and in someways the heavy amount of literature surrounding the track could be deduced as a mark of a successful pop song. She s got people talking once again. However, if you glanced over the "reviews" 2 Hearts appears to be regarded as a Goldfrapp wet-wipe, the glamrock mistake and step back for Kylie esp …

2007-10-12 17:05 Netherlands bans magic mushrooms
Trey says: "The Netherlands are banning the sale of 'magic mushrooms' after a French woman died from jumping off a building after taking them." Calls for a re-evaluation of the drug grew after a 17-year-old French girl jumped from a building after eating magic mushrooms during a school trip to Amsterdam in March. Other incidents involving the drug have included an Icelandic tourist jumping from a balcony and breaking both legs and a Danish tourist driving his car wildly through a camping ground, …

I've been mucking about in Second Life now for a few months. I have had...and am still having... a good time in there too all things considered. One of my more disheartening observations about SL though has been the total lack of other people of my Faith background! Sure! There ARE "churches" in Secondlife but nearly everyone I have visited has been of the hyper fundamentalist pentecostal type (and no actual people)... or are empty "old fashioned" churches more for quaint pretty appearances than …

Even when people are of a single mind about an objective, they can have differences of opinion about how to get achieve that goal. That is what is happening with efforts to reduce cases of malaria in Africa. One of the most effective methods for eliminating the threat (mosquitoes that carry a protozoan parasite that causes malaria) is to get people to use mosquito nets impregnated with insecticide. The debate has been about the best way to distribute the nets [" Distribution of Nets Splits Malar …

Relative difficulty: Medium THEME: "BORE" homonyms This felt about right for a Tuesday. Don't have much to say this morning beyond a few scattered observations. First, the theme answers: 17A: BORE (tiresome windbag) - I wrote in TIRESOME HANDBAG before ever looking at the clu …

Wow, what a full day here at Internet Librarian International. In addition to finally meeting in person several people that I've come to know through either their blogs, Flickr or Facebook, I also attended several great sessions.
