2007-11-05 21:07 The Iraq war has become a disaster that we have chosen to forget
By Madeleine Bunting (THE GUARDIAN, 05/11/07): "You think you are innocent, but you're not," said the British Muslim suicide bomber in the Channel 4 television drama Britz last week. As the compelling actor Manjinder Virk recited her suicide statement to camera, she went on: thousands of women and children are dying every day in Iraq and Afghanistan, and yet the governments responsible have been returned to power. Her assertion sticks in the mind because it goes straight to the heart of how we ch …

2007-10-23 18:26 Turkey is a thorn in the side of a cosy western consensus
By Slavoj Zizek, international director of the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities (THE GUARDIAN, 23/10/07): Recent days have seen Dick Cheney and Tony Blair point belligerent fingers at Tehran, but both spoke in the slipstream of Bernard Kouchner, who a month ago warned the world that it should prepare for war over Iran's nuclear programme. "We have to prepare for the worst, and the worst is war," said the French minister of foreign affairs. The swell of rhetoric - which culminated in Preside …

2007-10-22 22:45 COHA Report. The Organization of American States: On its Deathbed
To Our Readers Unfortunately, an older and unedited version of the COHA piece entitled The OAS: On its Deathbed was inadvertently sent out to a very small cohort of COHA readers on October 17 before an error was discovered and the press run was immediately aborted. Due to a computer editing error, the author, Sean Bartlett did not catch that two different facts were spliced into one sentence. Jose Miguel Insulza, as a young man in his late twenties, was a political director in the Chilean For …

2007-10-18 13:42 Why Would I Want to Stay Home Part 4
The home should be the center of productivity... The home should be a place out of which love and service flows to our families, and to those all around us. The home should be a place of industry, where our resources are conserved, and sometimes income generated. The home should be a place of security, comfort and beauty to our husbands, children and guests. The home should be a place where mom is at the center, helping her husband fulfill their family vision, nurturing her children, being there …

2007-10-18 10:45 PC Education: Lost in Space
A liberal Yale professor takes a critical look at his cohort's handiwork. Politically-correct, multicultural education, like a lost spacecraft drifting forever in space with no destination and no way to return home, has lost contact with real life. It has become a caricature of science, a bastardized version that Friedrich Hayek called scientism. Jacob Laksin's review on the City Journal website of Yale professor Anthony Kronman's Education's End: Why Our Colleges and Universities Have Given Up …

2007-10-17 21:01 Towards a Universal Doctrine of Human Rights
Unsurprisingly, females may be hard-wired to compete against and destroy other females. For years, feminists-myself included-focused on women as victims. We argued, correctly, that women were not only being discriminated against economically but were the objects of horrific psychological, sexual, and physical violence. In North America and Europe, women are still being raped, incested, battered, trafficked, tortured, and murdered. However, after forty five years of feminist activism, such acts a …

S tockTube has been bashing Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO, stock ) whenever the opportunity presents itself in favor of Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG, stock ). While you might see me as a mean-creature just short of sexually abuse both Jerry Yang and David Filo, in contrast my intention was for Yahoo s own good *evil grin*. I simply can t live in a world full of monopolization, not that I can put all the blames on the younger brother Google for its effectiveness and innovative products that makes elde …

In a little-noticed coda to the summer he devoted to a concerted reiteration of the church's social Magisterium, in late September B16 launched into two Angelus catecheses on the proper use of capital, and the dangers of its excesses. From the translations provided by L'Espresso's Sandro Magister, here's the text of the Pope's 30 September talk: Today, Luke's Gospel presents to us the parable of the rich man and poor Lazarus (Lk 16: 19-31). The rich man personifies the wicked use of riches by th …

2007-10-15 22:52 The Case Against Bobby Jindal
In less than a week, Louisianans will vote on who is best qualified to lead our State for the next four years. We face a monumental decision. This election does not simply represent a change in leadership; it also marks the first time Louisianans have had to make a decision about their state's leadership since the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. In her new book The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism, author Naomi Klein reveals a fascinating relationship between the natur …

2007-10-15 19:30 remodeling of Genghis Khan
The Russian remodeling of Genghis Khan By Dmitry Shlapentokh Genghis Khan and his successors - the great conquerors who built the greatest continental empire in the world - have fascinated historians and writers for centuries. Still, in practically all countries that encountered Mongolian armies, Genghis Khan has almost never been seen in a positive light and none has tried to make him its own. Russia, which had been swept by Mongolian hordes in 1237-1240 was no exception, at least throughout Ru …

Original Essay for Powell's Books "During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act." George Orwell I never intended to be a revolutionary. In March 2003 when the U.S-led invasion of Iraq was launched I was in the midst of another full mountaineering season in Alaska. However, unlike earlier seasons, I was unable to devote myself wholeheartedly to my time in the mountains, which I consider my sanctuary. I retained my links with the less divine through radio and pho …

2007-10-15 16:20 Lyndon Lamborn--In His Own Words
In following up on the story about the excommunication of Mesa, Arizona church member Lyndon Lamborn, I emailed Lyndon asking for more details about the circumstances surrounding his excommunication. He kindly responded and, with his permission, I post his response here. The words are entirely his (with a few minor editorial revisions to clean up typos or protect the identity of those whose permission for revealing their identity I did not obtain). Some of his words are stronger than what I woul …

2007-10-15 15:45 Beijing bluster
By Simon Tisdall (THE GUARDIAN, 15/10/07): The Chinese president, Hu Jintao, was in Harold Macmillan mode today, telling his people they had never had it so good. "China's overall strength has grown considerably and people enjoyed more tangible benefits" under his leadership, he said. "China's international standing and influence has risen notably". Perhaps he should be called Super-Hu. Yet the "trust us, all will be well" message emanating from the Communist party's 17th congress in Beijing is …

2007-10-15 13:00 Civil Liberties: Detention without Trial
Hauled before a military tribunal at the American naval base in Guantnamo Bay, the detainee, picked up in Afghanistan, asked why he was being held. For associating with a member of al-Qaeda, he was told. Give me his name, the detainee demanded. The tribunal's president said he didn't know it. Nor did any of the tribunal's other members. How can I respond to this the detainee cried before being taken back to his cell to continue his detention, perhaps for the rest of his life. This Kafkaesque …
