2007-10-29 16:41 Känner du igen dig
Det finns en facebookgrupp som heter "I am a product of washed up hippies and their 70's/80's children's shows." Känner du igen dig Seriously, Let's look at the evidence. 1) Romper Room - Doobie The bee, Spacy chick who looked throu …

2007-10-18 20:02 Never mind the treaty squabbles. Europe's real problem is Babel
By Timothy Garton Ash (THE GUARDIAN, 18/10/07): As the leaders of the European Union gather under the dome of the Atlantic Pavilion in Lisbon to thrash out the last details of that pesky treaty, the one thing you can be sure of is that the ordinary people of Europe will be beyond the security cordon, outside the dome. Should we not let the people speak The people of Europe, I mean, not just the people of Britain, Ireland or France. To adapt GK Chesterton's famous poem about "the secret people". …

2007-10-17 23:32 Police station vandalized in Amsterdam after officers kill mentally ill attacker
This entire story is a cover up, the œmentally ill man was 22-year-old Bilal B., a Dutch man of Moroccan descent, he had been in a psychiatric hospital as recently as Sunday morning. He was an associate of the "Hofstad Group" a group of radical Dutch Muslims that includes Mohammed Bouyeri, serving a life sentence for the 2004 murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh. The minor riot resulted because a infidel woman had the nerve to kill a Muslim male. The real crime here is most of the news sources di …

2007-10-12 23:41 In Rainbows
In case you were not aware, you can download the latest Radiohead album from inrainbows.com and pay ... whatever you want. Just so you know, I actually did pay for it. Oh and, I know this post is short, but I had the an inordinately difficult time typing it. I kept wanting to type inpassing instead of inrainbows, a site I used to check often when I was living in Berkeley. And so, here are overheard quotes from inpassing.org : "No, he's like, seriously shaken hands with Hussein." "Did they bro-hu …

2007-10-12 07:00 Best Of - Indiana Jones 4
Hey guys, Yesterday, shooting wrapped for Indiana Jones IV. Film news sites like Ain't It Cool News, JoBlo.com, IESB.net, CHUD.com, IGN, ComingSoon, LatinoReview and Slashfilm were invited to the set and all came back with glowing reports and interviews with Spielberg who shared a few Indy 4 details, which I will let you discover for yourself. (You can get a summary here .) I enjoyed Slashfilm's article. Peter Sciretta wrote, "Steven gushed about how a film frame is alive with movement and film …

2007-10-09 12:00 TUESDAY, Oct. 9, 2007 - Timothy Powell
Relative difficulty: Medium THEME: "BORE" homonyms This felt about right for a Tuesday. Had a little trouble with a couple of phrases (seemed to be a lot of 2+-word answers), and there there were a couple of answers I hadn't heard of - including one of the theme answers! - but otherwise, fairly smooth sailing. Don't have much to say this morning beyond a few scattered observations. First, the theme answers: 17A: BORE (tiresome windbag) - I wrote in TIRESOME HANDBAG before ever looking at the clu …

2007-10-09 06:29 Signs of Hope and Creativity
I enjoy seeking out signs of hope especially ones that reflect creativity and solidarity, and that accordingly give hope and encouragement not only to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Catholics, but to all Catholics longing to fully participate in the life and pilgrim journey of their Church. It s so easy to focus on and react to the negative. This is especially true when the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church, far from embodying a pilgrim church, is, as Rosemary Radford Ruethe …

2007-10-06 14:24 lg Nobel Award Hamster Viagra Cure for Jet Lag
Patricia Agostino of Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1 of 10 researchers for this year's Ig Nobel prize discovered that a hamster on Viagra recovers faster from jet lag than those which aren't taking the drug. Patricia and her team found that hamsters given Viagra required 50% less time to recover from a 6 hour time zone change. But they didn't catch a plane - they simply turned the lights off and on at various times. Quirky as it seems, the discovery could provide a major impact for millions of flyers …

2007-10-05 11:53 Email from Rabbi Abraham Cooper of the Simon Wiesenthal Center
Dear Glenn; I will be calling you shortly to discuss, but I put a few points in writing that hopefully would give you a better perspective of our efforts in this area: We share your concern, and are glad you share ours, about how the œconstant, trivializing use of terms like Hitler, Nazi, Gestapo, and Holocaust in debasing civility and political discourse in America and other democracies. Given the relentless criticism of us for decades for supposedly harping to excess on the misuse of Holocau …

2007-10-03 09:18 Guest blogger Bas Timmers on the customisable future of news
Bas Timmers is Newsroom Editor at Dutch broadsheet de Volkskrant It´s 2015. Newspapers don´t exist anymore. At least, not as a mass medium. Because everyone is living in his own cocoon, his own little world, assembled to his own preferences. Customizable, as the phenomenon is generally called. A television(or a computer screen or electronic paper) displays documentaries and YouTube-like videos from internet users with the same preferences and the same lifestyle. The mp3-player pounds out songs a …

2007-09-08 03:26 A Well Connected Story
As I began to plan this week's wordless image I was absolutely at a loss. I thought, and I thought, and I thought, but nothing--- absolutely nothing came to mind. I even contemplated NOT having a wordless image. The situation sort of reminded me of my Language Arts students when I announce that we will be doing creative writing for most of the period. There are always a few students who wail, œ .but, I can t think of anything to write about. I remind students to check out their idea list we be …

Following Friday's end-of-the-month rally on below avg volume, futures indicate a slightly lower open for the mkt. Despite the summer trading season officially ending with the passing of the Labor Day holiday, today is shaping up to be another slow summer session. One issue weighing on futures is the yen rising, paring carry trades, as a decline in overseas stocks prompted investors to pare purchases of riskier assets, and after Qatar said it will reduce dollar holdings and invest in Asia.
