By Jason Webb MADRID, Oct 25 (Reuters) - The Catholic Church is preparing to beatify 498 of its members killed during the Spanish Civil War, putting them on the path to possible sainthood but reviving memories of a conflict that still divides Spain. Most of those to be honoured at Sunday's ceremony in Rome, the biggest mass beatification ever and to be attended by thousands of Spanish pilgrims, were priests or nuns killed by left-wing militias at the outbreak of the 1936-39 war. Catholic Church to construct monument to clergy killed during Spanish Civil War By Paul Stuart 6 August 2007 Valencia City Hall, controlled by the right-wing Popular Party (PP), has granted the Catholic Church the right to build a new church covering 3,000 square metres, topped with a 28-metre-high bell tower, in the former dockside warehouse district of El Grau. The new church will be a memorial to the martyrs of 1936, those clergy killed during the Civil War. The Catholic Church enthusiasti …

Its been two years. Democracy Now recapped: The storm made landfall south of New Orleans at 6:10 a.m. Aug. 29, 2005. The powerful hurricane ravaged the Gulf coast of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama and left over 1,600 people dead. More than 300,000 homes were destroyed and over 770,000 people displaced. It was the most powerful and expensive natural disaster to hit the country and one of the deadliest hurricanes recorded in US history. Eighty percent of New Orleans was submerged under water …

2007-08-16 20:30 The earthquake in Peru
The Jose Padilla case is already pushing this off the US headlines, which is deeply disappointing. The death toll (400-500 thus far) does not tell the whole story. Things you should know that are not necessarily going to make the headlines: It's been revised up to an 8.0 earthquake, felt as far away as Colombia, Brazil, and Argentina. There have been hundreds of aftershocks, ranging from 7's and 5's on down. There's probably 70-80,000 people directly affected, around 20,000 homeless. The city of …

2007-08-16 18:09 Spoiling your holiday, here s Rigoberta
This is Rigoberta Mench, a Nobel peace prize winner and a presidential candidate in Guatemala's next election. I read her book titled I, Rigoberta before going to Guatemala in 2004. She is, like a majority of all Guatemalans, part of the indigenous population that is being oppressed by a corrupt government. Not like that many Guatemalans, she is very conscious and proud of being indigenous. She is a remarkable woman who has been through a lot, I'm not going to list it all here. In 2055, Guatema …

The Tour isn't quite over yet, at least in terms of the doping test results. El Pais reports that Iban Mayo (Saunier Duval - Prodir) tested positive for EPO in the 24th stage of the Tour de France. Astana has fired Alexander Vinokourov from its cycling team. Vinokourov tested positive for blood "doping" (i.e. getting an infusion of someone else's blood). The entire Astana team withdrew from the Tour when Vinokourov's results became known. Share on Facebook
